Where is the engine block stamping located on a 1970 stage 1 engine? code = 1231738. whcih side, general area?

Ross, that should be a casting number rather than a stamping. This number should show upon the block surface between the rear of the intake manifold and the trans bellhousing mating surface.

1231738 is not the 'engine code', it's the casting number of the block and was used for almost all of the 1970 455's.

you should be able to find '1231738' cast into the block in the trans bell housing saddle along with the displacement.

the 'engine code' for the 1970 Stage motor is 'SS' and you will find that stamped (not cast) in the top of the block deck between the two rear plugs on the drivers side. a thorough cleaning may be required to get the oil/crud/grime off so you can see it. if the block has been decked this code will be gone.
