Hello !! I am a new guy to this site. I currently have a 1955 Super it's on pretty decent shape the guy that appraised it said it was a three or something to that fact. I jumped right in with driving and found that I have generator problems as of now. Took it apart cleaned the core with electro solvent and reset the brushes, changed out what looked to be the original ground wire and replaced the power cable that had marine fittings on them. started it up and it showed that it was charging however after a few days it went dead again. Last owner said that he had indeed polarized it. Try to have it bench checked however folks in these parts ask what is a generator. The only thing left that I can think of is the wire harness, OR the Core from inside the Generator. Any ideas or ways to check generator, voltage regulator, wire harness OR a place that I can purchase rebuild parts ?? Thanks for your time in advance. P.S I think I sent this message in whats the year of your Buick Sorry

I would have my voltage regulator checked before I spent big bucks rebuilding a generator.

Is there a way to have it checked?? can you do it with a mulitmeter and if so what should I look for?? The guy that had it before me advised me that it was brand new.

Take it to the parts store and they can bench test it for you. And they SHOULD be able to test that generator, as well. It's really no different than an alternator. There's got to be SOMEONE that works there who knows what a generator is:laugh:

If the voltage reg is good, then you're probably on the right track with the generator problem.

since previous owner changed it,first make sure the wires are connected right,f+a(field & armature) at the gen to f+a @ the reg.to test in on the car disconnect the wires from the generator(so you dont damage the reg).put a jumperwire from the A term to pos on the battery(negative ground i assume?)& jumper the F term to ground, with it running.hook your voltmeter to the battery, you should see 14-15volts(12v system i assume?)if that checks out,a regulator is the next step.if you need it rebuilt or need a reg i can help you out, they were quite common when i started my rebuilding,i still do lots of them cause like your finding out,the new guys have no clue what they are...but i do  btw you might put your location in your signature :TU:
