The 70 is at least 2 tenths faster. The convert has run in the 13.70s once, and 13.90s regularly. The 70 has run in the 13.50s once, and 13.70s regularly. The 70 is a lot more fun to race--high stall converter, hard launch with 1.8 60 ft times. (Granted, I haven't raced the 68 yet, but I'm sure it won't be as much fun.)
I don't really want to make the 68 much faster, lest I be knocking at roll bar territory (13.49 and under.) It would be nice to get into the 13.50s with tuning, but I'd bet it's already pretty well near optimized. I think throwing ANY parts at it (cam, intake, stall converter, ect.) would blast me straight through the roll bar rule, so it's probably going to stay as is.
But the drive up would be SO much more fun in the 68.
I've got a while to decide... :)

Thank you VERY MUCH for the heads-up on this, Phil. I do believe my car will need approximately 288 (fluid) ounces of ballast strategically placed near the right rear tire for traction down the track.

8s or the Conv runs 12s ?
Thanks,Wayne
Wayne, the track will be a 1/4 mile track. As much as we all love to see the skyhawk the race is oriented more towards the Conv. But if you want to bring the Skyhawk there will be time only runs as well. Really up to you. :TU:

Well, Jarrod and I went to Temple last night to make a few passes.
The GN ran a best of 13.76 @ 101. :Dou:
I was running my only tires-- BFG Radial T/A's, and my 60 foot times showed it-- around 2.25, maybe a little less, but right around there all night. I did a decent burnout, but I never really hooked up til almost the grandstand it seems. I ran 9.02 1/8's.
It was hot as he*l-- air temp 100* when we got there and still 93 when we left.
The car did run great though. I had about 1/4 tank of 93 and bought 3 gallons of 116 and mixed it in, so I was running on maybe 100 octane gas. I had it turned down to 19 lbs of boost. The coolant temp stayed cool, which was a big concern of mine.
I wonder how much a set of stickier times would help?
So, I'm thinking now:
Alchohol injection
boost controller
slicks
25 lbs. boost
12's? :bglasses: :Do No:
Ready for Rusk!

Frank, Don't boil street tires. It can actually make them worse. Just do a small burnout to clean them off and warm them a little. Might help.

I need to start a list of whoever is planning to stay at my place.
I have a list from our Dallas board who plan on staying but only 2 I think confirmed from the Austin/Houston area.
If all works out correctly, I will be there starting Friday and staying through Sunday until Monday early a.m.
So please list your name and if you plan on stopping in Friday or Saturday a.m. or p.m.
I have limited amount of couch/floor space in the house, but plenty of room for tents, campers, etc.

The Rate is $59... It is on a call in basis at this point. No Special rate for the group because the amount of people are unknown and I don't think they care about the amount of people in a room. (Or so the attendent stated) :Dou:

White car has a multitude of little problems that I don't have time to fix. It didn't feel very strong on that one drive to Temple and it hasn't been attending our LSPBC shows either.
The GS is NOT, repeat NOT fixed and I have no idea what to do next. Same problem for over 3 years. I do something to the GS almost every night.
It's not rocket science.
I give up.

Done all the fuel lines. Just put new vent lines on the tank last night but need a 2 line vent to put on it. Just have 2 vent lines with an S in them sticking straight up right now.
There is NO reason this car should be having a problem on the track.
Anyone that has looked at it sees no problem with it.
At least you have an excuse for not having a car at the track. You've rebuilt your WHOLE car!!
I bought this car to race, and it was raced before I bought it. It was built to race.
I saw it run, you saw it run, everyone saw it run. I get ahold of it and haven't made not one good run in it.
Enough is enough.
I've done everything I can do. A shop can't do anything to it that I haven't already done. I get the same suggestions on what to look at on it.
Like I said before, it is not rocket science. I just have hard a$$ luck and I might as well accept racing is not something that I'm not going to get to do.
Count my loss and get out. I've tried like hell to get this car running, so what else to do except drive it around on the street or get rid of it.
Guess I should have stayed with that non-car guy I met, got married, and stayed barefoot and pregnant like a woman should.
Haha Dee, You will find the problem Fuel and spark operate the system. Pick your choice and work out every possible means to repair it. I do think your on the right track repairing the line on the tank. The factory connected that line for a reason as well. If it was not needed I am sure it would not be there. I also think it will seal the system and allow for complete flow of fuel. In any case I wish you the best I know you will find the problem and give yourself on of these :Dou: after you repair it.

Ive got a buddy, been a GM/Buick master tech for 20 years that has his own side business, and he can fix it for ya. The only reason I have yet to offer this option in the past is because you seemed determined to fix this on your own. You would have to drop it and leave it, as, it is a side business and he is doing all he can on his off time. But being best friends for the past almost 30 years, Im sure I can get him to work it in. Seems you have lots of options, so its up to you whether this car gets fixed or not.
PS, hes our age and still has his first car, a 1969 Buick GS400 Stage 1 4 speed. Now also has a 70 GSX clone......... He knows his Buicks................

Believe me, I'm not easily frustered. I've fixed all the lines on the car except the hard lines through the frame.
I've been up, down, and all around the car 10 times now.
I've taken at least 4 or 5 of these cars completely apart and put at least 2 back together but that's been about 20 years ago. I'm a little rusty but I should be able to fix this problem.
And remember, the problem is ONLY on the track, in second gear, around 2,500 rpm. It DOES NOT have a problem on the street now. Phil fixed that for me!!! :Brow:
I've had probably at least 20 Buicks and lots of other old cars. That's what the ex. and I did. We bought Buicks, Novas, and whatever else was cheap and looked like fun to fix up, fixed them up, and sold them. I'm not just a girl wanting to get into the old car thing, I've lived the life, was out of it for a while, and been trying to get back in the swing of it for the last 4 years now, but things haven't gone too good. :ball:
So when I bitch and complain, moan and groan, I truely have something to whine about!!!! A complete, excellent running Buick that can't make it down the track would piss any of you guys off if you BS'ed with it as much as I have.
You know what's funny Wayne? Both of my Buicks actually run!!!!!    Are you coming out to the race or are you going to a parade with the missus?
So if I do waste all of the gas, drive it all the way to East Texas and back by myself, take it to the track, someone WILL fix it? Is it a dare? Is it a bet? Are we gonna wager on this???? Will they have a TNT before racing so it can be taken down the track at least a few times without having to pay to race? :Do No: :Do No:
I'll probably get home tonight about 7:00p.m. The only thing I have left to do is clean the air filter and I might try to rotate the distributor so it isn't as close to the radiator hose. Don't know what we could talk about that would fix it. :ball: :ball: :ball:
How much advance does everyone recommend running?
I'll go away now.....

Dee, I'm sorry your car is still giving you fits, that'd drive me nuts too!
Wish I was closer, and/or able to help.
Hang in there, I'm sure you or somebody will track it down, even if it takes awhile.
In the meantime, why not take your other Buick (or even that furrin one) to the Bash and do what I did - just run it like you would on the street and get some times? Not to mention the food and fellowship... :TU:
I think people would be happy to help dee. There will be some knowledgeable people there and maybe they could give you an objective opinion on it as well as a helpful hand. Otherwise, you will be among other Buick people. (That can't be all bad.) :TU:

Dee, we have talked about your situation before, and what you are dealing with really sux and is terribly frustrating. I know this because I went through this same exact ordeal over an 18 month period. I replaced every single piece of my fuel system and tried three different mechanical pumps, one of which was supposed to be good up to 500+ hp.
What I have come to learn, through many other real life experiences, is that once you get these BB powered cars capable of running deep in the 13s and into the 12s, many of them can not be fed by a mechanical fuel pump. There will always be those that are able to run 12s on a factory pump, and I can not explain that, but I know several that can not get their car to perform at the track using even the best available mechanical pump.
Here is a quote from one of the top Olds engine builders taken from a recent thread on ROP talking about a guys situation where his car was laying over at the track. He is not a very good speller, but he does know a lot about these cars:
"If you want my opinion on where a high volume mechanical pump and oem system will not adequitely produce enough pounds per hour of fuel, than here it is:
14.4 et @ 3800pds.
Yes, I know the stories already about how you run 12's and 13's with a factory oem system."
My advice would be to get an internally regulated electric pump and splice it into your system back by the tank.

Even you have seen this car run somewhere in the 13's on a stock non-Stage 1 pump. Now it's got a Stage 1 pump on it (actually 3rd pump), and it SHOULDN'T cut out. Can we pull your electric pump off your car and try it on mine??? :Brow: :Brow:
I HAVE to diagnose the problem now and not change out or add new parts. :Smarty: :Smarty: :Smarty: (I have to save up $$ to buy a computer since they are on us here at work to not be on the internet).
Have you noticed I'm a little stubborn (stupid)? :Dou:
The white car isn't in good enough shape to drive that far. It needs a tune-up really bad, the heat riser cup thingy for the choke is leaking, I still have that little tap in it and not sure if it's a exhaust manifold or not and a few other things that have to be done before it can drive out of town.
I really don't want everyone to have to look at my car at the track when everyone is suppose to be having fun, fellowship, and food. I'm tired of being the pain in the a$$ at our events.
So Phil, will they let ME TNT without paying for racing?

Dee,
Just based on what I've read, I don't think it's the fuel pump. The stock Stage 1 fuel pump is all you need for a street car. My car runs 12.80's with one, and Jason Cook (buick64203) still runs a stock pump on his 71 GS, and he ran several 11.90's in Salem. It could be the lines, but if you already blew them out and there is no restriction, then probably not. Vapor lock is possible depending on the location of the fuel line from the pump to the carb. It is cheap and easy to fix by re-routing it away from the head or intake, but rubber tubing is not recommended since it can cause the fuel to get too hot, so a metal line is what I would suggest. I have one you can try, and if it works, new pre-bent ones are available for about $20 from Inline Tube.
Take a deep breath, and then take your car to Rusk. I will be glad to help if you need it. It also depends if we can go, but that will depend on if we can arrange overnight baby sitting!!
Hope to see you tonight at Chucks!
Good luck!

Dee, I won't be able to be there, and I certainly can't speak for others, but I don't think you understand - for a gearhead like me, taking a look at your car would be a PART of the fun, fellowship, and food (well, maybe not food, but...). Didn't make it to Chucks. Was going to bring the GS but got busy working on it and didn't realize it was already 5:00 p.m. :ball:
I have a new Stage 1 line but it runs a little too close to the motor for my liking right now so I didn't put it on.
I have my stock metal line from the pump rerouted away from the engine way out front of everything. It does have some rubber line from the end of the metal line to the carb since I have an Edelbrock on it with an external filter. The rubber line is not touching anything.
I know for sure it's not the fuel pump. Maybe my car doesn't run in the 11's and 12's because it's not getting enough fuel! :Brow: :Dou:
If it doesn't pour rain like our last Temple event at the first of the year, I'll be taking the GS to Rusk.

New filter and fluid. Fluid looked excellent before it was changed. The guy said it looked good too, until we dropped the pan.
Lots of grey goo in the bottom. Stick your finger straight down in it and in places it was 1/8 inch thick.
Little bit of metal shavings but not too bad. Filter had a few shavings on it.
When I've seen goo like this before, it was only a matter of time..... :ball:
Transmission is not slipping (and wasn't slipping before) but I'm sure it will be by the end of the trip.
And no, I didn't go to a transmission shop. I hate transmission shops! :af:
Almost forgot to ask....and how can this be resolved? Tranny rebuild = $$$$$
Dee, Clutch dust in the pan is not the best sign. It is telling you that your 2-3 clutches are about to fail or have failed many times than not due to overheating. I hate to say this but your on the verge of a rebuild and may be the reason for the way the car ran as a whole. Hope this helps.

I asked the guy that did the service about excessive fluid temp. being a cause for failure of clutches/bands, etc. and he said no???!!!! :Do No:
Are you talking about fluid temp. overheating or clutch overheating from excessive use like racing, etc.?
Overheating is usually measured by the fluid temprature. Fluid Temprature is the #1 falure of clutches in a transmission this is according to my uncle who owns a transmission shop.

That's what I thought.
I asked the guy that owned the shop if hot fluid from the lines running right on the headers would cause the gunk in the pan because of high temps in the transmission causing premature wear (reason why I put an external cooler on the car recently) but he said he didn't think the lines being right on the headers would do that. :eek2:
That's what I get for having a Dodge guy do some work for me. Seems like since he owns a Viper, he'd be a little smarter. Guess just because you own a fancy car it doesn't mean you know everything. :puzzled:

Dee, I wouldn't worry about your trans. Grey goo in the bottom of the tranny pan isn't that big a deal, I've seen them with twice that much and they were still working fine. If your fluid doesn't look or smell burned and the tranny isn't acting up, then I'd keep on driving it without worry. Since your trans cooler lines aren't right up against your headers, I wouldn't worry that much about it - if you're concerned, you can get a trans temp gauge in there pretty easily. Since you've got the cooler in the radiator plus an extra one, I'll bet your temps are fine.
Edelbrock carb? Well, there's your problem - you need a Q-jet! :Smarty:

The transmission lines to the cool ARE ON the headers. Smashed against the headers. :eek2:
I bypassed the cooler in the radiator to stay away from the engine heat.
I was going to get some super-dooper transmission lines to run through the frame but I got the wrong kind of cooler to use the lines with. The lines use AN fittings. Didn't know about the lines until AFTER I bought and installed the cooler. :Dou:

When I put in the 455 about three years ago, I pulled the TH350 along with the engine. After draining and pulling the pan, there was what I would consider a lot of silver-ish goo in the bottom. The fluid was normal though, so I ended up just cleaning it up and putting in a new filter and fluid.
This was three years ago, prior to having a 455 in place, and prior to countless shreddings through the gears with a 455. I keep my fingers crossed every day, but it still shifts just as hard as it did three years ago.
Hopefully I have not just jinxed myself and it blows up in Rusk :Dou:.

Your Q-jet does have the inlet fitting, right?
Now that I finished up the last of my fuel work, it feels like a carb problem to me. :Smarty:
Sometimes when I give it a little punch from a dead stop or rolling a little, it cuts out and then picks up.
Also sometimes AFTER I punch it and let off, it cuts out sometimes like it's out of gas.
I hope it's not my stupidity, but I feel close to making some positive progress in getting decently down the track.

Are you still timing it be ear? I hope not. That off idle stumble can be timing for sure! 80 degrees? Not timing. Your engine wants 34-36* all in at 2400 RPM or so. I usually start with 0-2 initial and light springs. Do you have an adjustable vacuum advance? You will want to have about 10* more VA so when you are cruising you have 45 or so total. :Smarty:

First thing we should do is put a light on it and see what's really up with timing. Personally, I think it's ignition, not fuel or carb. If we find the timing is really screwed up, fix it and one run like that. If no improvement, well throw in my spare HEI--real easy, quick swap.
I presume you've changed, or at least looked at, plugs throughout the ordeal. We went through all these kinds of swaps for three days on my friend Patrick's car in BG, trying to cure a top end miss, only to finally pull the plugs and see that #6 was horribly coolant fouled (slight head gasket leak.)

Sorry to hear about Mother Nature. She wasn't kind to us for the Midwest Challenge, either, only got in the major part of one day. What did we all do to tick her off, I wonder?
8 foot snake? You do grow things big in Texas!
Glad you still had fun anyway! Buick folks seem to have no trouble doing that.
Take care,
Shari
Yeah, I think we NEED some of the "Norwalk Luck" (1 Rain Date in 16 Years)
Was to Short of Notice to Get "Skylarkwilly" to use His Persuation, down here.
(1300 mile tow IS a bit much for a 1 day event)
As for Other items, I AM getting excited already about Norwalk for next Year!!!
I have "Talked" with Deb Bader, and being that they are changing to NHRA Sanction, and there are $6M in Upgrades going into Norwalk, (THIS IS GOING TO BE SOMETHING!!!!!!!) What was GREAT Before, is going to get BETTER!!!
Track, at Rusk was Nice, But they needed more "Bader" deplomancy toward the Racers from the Operators.
NOW IF I can only have a Car ready for June!!!

You may be right JR. (hey thought- Rain X as a sponsor :puzzled: ) As for the Bader influence I think all tracks should be required to have that kind of deplomacy. :beer

Sorry about the poor weather, who'da thunk it'd rain in Texas???
I thought I was the reason for the rain, but it looks like it's not me, yay for that!
What happened with Dee's car? Get it sorted out?

I FINALLY went "all the way" 3 times, but not in the 13's like I should be. There is still an issue, but not as bad of an issue as before. :puzzled:
And yes, JR had to mention my best pass was only a 14.04, worst was I think 14.4 out of the 3 runs I got in before the rain (I tried to leave my "little cloud at home). MPH picked up on each run but 1/4 time got slower. It has something to do with heat because the warmer the car is, the slower my 1/4 times.
First run short-shifted (I've been running it in D) from first to second. I think I'm having some kind of transmission problems. I'm going to try a new modulator since they are cheap. I had to put my foot hard through the floor and almost broke my seat trying to get my foot into it more so it wouldn't short-shift. It did shift correctly when I put my foot through the floor. I think the tranny cooler and service might have helped but I'm going to make some new transmission lines to get them out from underneath the headers. just in case.
I felt a hiccup coming in second gear on my 3rd run and sure enough I got two small pops out of it in second just like before, but it didn't nose-dive.
The timing was right-on. The distributor cap was riding against the radiator hose so Nick fixed that for me and set the timing. Thanks Nick!!!! :TU: :TU: :TU:
I've got to check the new plugs that I have in it to see how it ran.
And thanks to Phil for all of your technical support over the phone! :TU: :TU: :TU: There might have been several times he called when I was in not the best of moods over the GS but he put up with my bitching! :Dou:
Guess I should have warned all of you city boys that there is wildlife in East Texas. I've attached a picture of the snake I that walked right over when I stepped out my door barefooted after dark. Didn't notice he was there until I went to walk back in the house and couldn't get back in because he was right in front of the door! :eek2:

I'm glad you did'nt step on him barefooted. That would have for sure ruint your weekend.
I read in some of the posts and get the idea the track people were not very cordial with your group. This upsets me as Rusk is my home track now. I know if Ken and Molly were still there this would not of happened.

Hey Metlman. I had a good talk with molly and she actually appoligized for the treatment we got at the track. What makes it real nice is that molly no longer has any affiliation with that track. Molly and Ken seem like good people. As for the present owner - Well I am sure you get my drift. I will say they have a nice little track there and the drive down 84 is beautiful. But thats All the positive things I can say about the track. But I do not think I will ever attend that track again at least under the present management. :beer

I just like to say I enjoyed myself even with the bad weather. Meeting up with our buick minded friends is always fun. The blue stage1 was off alot with the 3500ft air we had. I think everyone noticed the losses. We still managed some 11.70s which is a good .5 off regular times for the stage2 motor.
I was really happy to see Shawn's 496cui GN make it down the track with both seats in place. :TU: That's a 10sec car is Houston!
This little event of ours could really turn into something if we could find us a regular track that could attract out of state members. I kind of like that track and facilities. The drive is nice and the track hooks! The management is typical NHRA. They waiting on rain all day just to call it. We finally just pulled into the staging lanes to force the issue. Lets face it though, any track would have called it after that heavy rain.
Can't wait till next year!
David we may have a perminent track (tenativly). The fastest car so far on their track is a 4.90 8th mile. But the track is open to the full 1/4. More info to come. This may cause our event to evolve a little :TU: Soon as I get the full details I will let everyone know. It will be obvious. :TU:

I do not remember how fast they went, but DO NOT bother going to the track to race if there are jet dragsters running.
Our local track broght a couple in for exhibition races on one of our street stock nights. Didn't help the spectator turnout at all (which is what they were hoping for.) The jets leave tons of unburned kerosene on the starting line, which totally ruins traction of cars that are actually powered by their wheels.

Salem 2005. Jet Cars ran the weekend before, and track was STILL TRASH for the BPG Event Dispite 90* weather all week.
I doubt a good rain would clear it fast enough.

After the slightly disappionting initial outing in Rusk in the new 68 convert, I have good news to report from the home track.
Best ET of 13.71 at 100.22!!! Yippee!!! 60ft was only 2.03--that thing needs a converter, but then I'd be knocking on the roll bar rule.... :eek2:

I'm pretty sure both of the sanctioning bodies (NHRA and IHRA) stipulate a helmet in a convertible at ANY speed. Helmet required at 13.99 and quicker in a hardtop, if I am not mistaken.

She- Robin -used mine.......the timing was set a 4deg advanced..and i was running mid-grade fuel...."hint hint"..maby some 110 and about 30degree advance will get you well into the 13:60's along with a better set of radials.....i dont understand the slower 60 ft times tho....i never went over 2.0 ---60's.....do you leave from a idle..or load up the converter? I always left from an idle..and shocked the suspension..to get the best 60 ft. Keep up the great work bud!!!
Nicholas Sloop
10-26-2006, 04:13 PM
Most of my runs have been off idle. In Rusk I was on the bald drag radials and only turned them a smidge to clean them. Spun on every run. Mounted my Hoosier QTPs for this last trip. Track prep was a lot better, but I don't think I heated them up enough until the last run. Tried loading the converter on the last run. It stalled at about 1200rpm, left clean, and that was the 2.03 60 ft, the best I've gotten. Need to try off idle with a good burnout.
I haven't even looked at the timing--I assumed it was optimized. I'll dive into that next (one of my favorite things to tinker with...) No backed-off timing for cheap gas allowed here!!!
