View Full Version : How does 295-50-15 fit at rear in 71 GS?

I am thinking about the combination 245-60-15 front and 295-50-15 rear on 15x8 wheels. The hight on both front and rear would be around 26.7 so it ought to look good. But will the rear fit in the well and how about the grip? Experiences anyone? Thanks.
I have 295X50X15 on 15"X8" rims on my 72 GS.
I had to order the reims from Wheel Vintiques with a 5" custom backspace to get them to fit and they fit great, no rubbing issues at all.
The rims were $150 each.

Hey guys,
The attached pictures of the green GS, does it have the custome 5" backspace on a 15X8, in other words to go with the 295 50 do you have to custom order the 8" wheel or can you get the standard 15X8 that I think prob has a 4.5" standard backspace.

Mine fit fine with no rubbing. And that's with a stock Buick rim. :TU:

Is that a standard 15X8 wheel with the 295 50 15, nothing custom about the wheel?

i had 295s on my 72 and they scraped just alittle so i lifted the rear alittle more . i have had 255-60s on front of my 72 .so i think 245s should clear

I believe the stock Buick rim is 15 x 7.

Hi I read ur info about the 295 50 15 tires not scraping. But another post says there may be some problems---do u know where I can get the spacers-I had the suspension all done almost 3 years ago so the height is a little above stock thks Mike
any info where I can get the eqipment would be appreciated

Don't mess around with those little tires. You can fit 325/50R15's under there with 15x10 rims and about 5.625" backspacing. Go big or go home! :)
Seriously, the scraping he is probably talking about is from the tires hitting up in the wheel wells. When tires get this big in the factory wheel wells, you have to remember that they are still round up top. So if you go over a big bump, you may rub up in the wheel well. No spacer is going to cure it.
You need to put air bags in the rear springs. I run the 325/50's and have this. You only need about 7-8 lbs. in the bags. Just enough to firm the rearend up without making it harsh. If you load up the back with people, you make need to take it up to 12-15 lbs. to avoid the rubbing issue.

I've had both 295/50-15 and 295/60-15's on my 71. 295/60-15 fills the wells better. What do you think?

Gold71GS...this is Jay,I like the look of the Welds on the back of your car. What size do you have on the back, are those 15"x8"s or those 15"x10"s? What backspace are they? I have a set of 15"x 8"s.Jay B.Britt,Jr.

I had 295's on stock 7 inch rims and I liked them, altho it's 'not recommended'-- worked fine for me.

This should mean that 275/60s should fit on 15X8s on stock rear end height, right?

I run the 275/60s on stock 15X7s with no air bags so you shouldnt have a problem.

Car is in shop this week due to oil pump locking up and dont know if something caused it to lock up or just the pump itslelf, hope to have it back this week and ill try to upload some pictures. There still not big enough for tracion, going to try 295's on a 8inch rim, would like the 325's but dont want to do any modifications to body.
