Starter install w/headers

I going to install my 464 shortly. Should I install the starter to the engine while its on the stand or should I do it after the engine is in? If I put it on first will I have problems getting the headers on? I'm going to be using one of Jamie McClintons mini high torque starters.

Eric, I installed my 464 with the mini starter bolted on. With the mini, there was lots of room, even with the TA 2" primary super comps.

I plan to put my starter on before. I've got the stage 2 heads and when I pulled the motor it was virtually impossible to remove the starter with the 2" primary headers in place. I am also purchasing one of Jamie's starters but, still plan to bolt it to the motor prior to installation. Had no problems pulling the motor with the starter still bolted on!

i just dropped my engine in the bay a couple days ago...i had to pull the starter off to get it in.the nose was hanging up on the trans case.but bear in mind,i was doing it by myself :( having someone else to push/shove/pivot & generally tell me what was going on were i couldnt see to line everything up would have helped a lot. :TU: but its going back on before the header wraslin begins :puzzled:

On my 464 bulldog head motor, I found the hook up the starter wiring easier with the ministarter in hand. Then simply bolt up the starter.
Whatever works for you with the limited wrenching room you have with your headers. Mine were 2 '' this last go around didn't go in as easy as before.

The only problem I have with putting starters on before installing the engine is the wiring. The small wires I find almost impossible to put on and get a wrench on while in place. At least with full size starters. Never tried a mini. How do you guys deal with the wires?

wiring hook-up is the same on a mini.but at 9 lbs & smaller diameter,its a lot easyer to put in.there are quick disconects for gm starters available.

I noticed that on Jamies starters the solenoid appears to be off set from the starter housing a bit. might make it a little easier to get the wires on.

I install my mini starter after the motors all in. I use to do it with a stock starter but now with that little tiny light thing its a snap getting it in there with all that room. You can reach them little devils with 1/4 drives and swivel sockets, but I found it about as easy to hook the wires up then stick the starter in.

Thats what I do, put wires on first but real easy to over-stretch them.
