View Full Version : How do you replace wheel studs?

I guess this post could go in several places....I understand the race inspectors want to see longer wheel bolts so I am sure a few people have replaced the stock ones with longer ones - which is what I need to do to fit some aluminum wheels on my car. :Dou:

The manual says for front drums you must shave the head off and push them through toward the wheel side. Is this necessary?

Do you have to pull the axles on the rear to do this (with rear drums)?

Thanks for any tricks.... :Brow:

I knock them out with a hammer and press new ones in with the axles and hub removed.

Bill - it you're running TRUE slicks then they want the longer studs AND the nuts that go THROUGH the rim so the rim is supported by the nut.

If you're just running DOT Drag Radials then you should be OK with normal nuts that press against the rim.

Use whatever is dictated by your rims .....

If you are going to replace with longer than stock I think you may have to remove the axles as they'll be too long to get behind the brake setup ?? :Do No:

A couple of good whacks squarely on the end should knock them loose

To draw the new ones into the axle I used a big half inch deep-well socket as a spacer over the bolt followed by a few fender washers and then just wrenched on an appopriate sized nut until the bolt head was flush with the back of the axle

I dunno about what you're saying about cutting the head off ??!!??

Alan - "According to the manual":

On front drums: the bolts are swagged on the wheel side so if you force them through the drum towards the brakes it will ream out the hole making it loose on the new bolts. Buick says to drill the head off and push them through toward the wheel side.

Can you replace stock size bolts on the rear without pulling the axles???

I'm not going racing, but the wheels I am going to use are aluminium and very thick at the hub. I want to get more bolt threads out past the wheel hub for safety.

Huh .... news to me. Wonder how they got them on in the first place then  :Do No: :puzzled:

Yes, I just did a few before my trip to Salem. you might have to spin it a bit to position it to where you have room to play though

Again, check with the wheel mfgr. to see if the wheels you are using require any special kind of nut, as in the ones that go through the wheel and have it ride on it.

Thanks Alan - Swagged - I'm sure it's done after assembly - maybe thats what holds the front hub and drum together???
