Here we go :
The trans is finished less the brake. I have a billet manual valve body in for break in. Don't want the temptation of trans brake launches  and some other neet stuff inside....
The rear is the 8.5 from the car. Moser 30 spline, spool, weld on ford "big bearing" ends and GM 373 gears. Welded tubes for grins.
The glass is in the car. I have a spare block that were going to bolt to the trany after the rear is bolted in, tomorrow I hope. Then we can start on the driveshaft and tube cross member. You can also see in the first picture the new glass rear bumper.

I moved the 72 Chevelle to storage for this winter so we can FINISH the Buick. I will not allow spring to come and go without doing a huge burnout in front of my house! I have had it with not drag racing!

Thanks "430" ! Yes on the VFN bumper (rear). Still need the front one. The VFN rear does not have mounting brackets so I removed the stock aluminum filler and used only the stock alum frame, after I sawzawed the thing into just the perimeter or shell. I made alum mounts to replace the stock shock type. The whole thing weighs about as much as two summit mags and three jegs!
Below is the test Block and heads for clearance stuff. The trany is under there as well. The Wilwoods bolted right up but the TA girdled cover doesn't fit. The top and bottom bolts are off by .030" to .050" in opposite directions.... The side bolts are right on? Not sure what’s up with that. The alum frame motor mounts don't come close to anything either? Great fun. Bob and Randy are the Wed night regulars.

We had to oblong one of the top two alum motor mount holes and ended up drilling our own third, or bottom hole.
NOW, we set the headers in to see if they would line up. Nope. They hit pretty bad on both sides. 2" primary stg 2. Drivers side hits the brake distribution block and the frame and the tranny shift linkage. The pass side hits mostly on the firewall, nothing a big hammer can't fix, and the frame.

Just a word of caution. I also used another block for mock-up and what I found when I installed the block I was going to run was that things were alittle different. Reasom being the block I used for mock-up was a standard block (never been touched) and the block (motor) I was going to run had been zero decked and that moved the headers down about .040 and things that did fit now hit something. Don't know what your using but take the block differences (if you have any) into account. I also have 2" header tubes and had to have the #7 cylinder tube re-configured to fit (no denting though) but for a different reason than you. Seeing I only paid $40.00 for a brand new set of headers it was worth putting some more money in them but they are a tight fit. It took me 4 hours to get all the header bolts in them.

oh ya, that makes more sense. I will stick some old gaskets under the heads, that might help. The heads I have are borrowed stg 2 Early castings with plenty of work done. O-ringed and decked etc... This weekend I might try to figure out how much they took off those in order to "build" mine back up. The blocks should be pretty close. Looks like if we shave the alum mounts the motor might slide back just enough to clear one of the many clearance problems.
Thanks for the reminder

I did that a long time ago, and yes, I did come up with carrot. Apparently, the number 6 is often associated with the colour orange, or in a vegetable context, carrot. :) You're right, though... the mathematical questions must be asked in rapid succession.

Definitely the makings of a highly covert operation. Looking good! Once you get passed the mach-up and all the b.s. with the headers it is easy flying the rest of the way. I would have never thought about the BOP 8.5 and the GN 8.5 covers. That's good information to know. What radiator are you going to run? Think about this know before its too late. Where is the oil filter going to be postioned?
You may want to do some notching on the frame on the passenger side to make lower rad hoses and oil filters a little more accessible for swapping out. I didn't do any notching over there and it can be a real b&$#@ to change a little larger than normal oil filter. I sometimes end up driving a screw driver through it because I can't get my oil filter tool on it.
Here is something else. If you run vacuum brakes make sure you put the one-way valve back in the line, or use a catch can, otherwise your master cylinder vacuum will bleed back to the motor and you'll get a soft pedal.
It definitely takes a real man to tear down a Buick and put it all back together. You should be able to handle that.:beers2:

I have been hanging around the Finishline Line Motorsports guys too much lately :Dou: Now, smartly, the Bottom end is going on a road trip sometime next week for a set of these : SEE Picture below. Were also going to deck the block to get closer to 11. 1 along with additional oil mods.
I have been looking for a rad; any suggestions for this build would be helpful. I would like to keep the $ down though. Alum is much preferred for weight. Mez electric pump is part of the system.
Oh ya, The heads are finally complete! They were on the motor but the flow numbers didn't quite add up, so we flowed each port (thanks Bobb!). They turned out to be pretty good for this street / strip motor. 340 Int 260 Ex. + +

For an affordable aluminum rad I went with the biggest Summit brand aluminum rad they had and bought a Griffin Rad cap. I did have to notch out my core support, but it was weight well lost. I used upper mounts from a Ford Crown Victoria and reused my lower rubbers. You may have some problems finding a lower rad hose for your build. I went with a lower rad hose from an 86 Regal with an olds 307.
I also pulled an electric fan out of a Lincoln Continental. Lincoln's always have the best electric fans. That beats anything you can buy new.

The rule book I sent you will tell what thickness it has to be. You will have a PM from me soon (tonight).

ARP also makes a metric stud (longer than stock) that I used (part#100-7708) that no drilling is necessary. It can save you some money if you already have some metric lug nuts. I have never seen these studs listed in a catalog but both Jegg's and Summit have them but you have to ask for them. Don't know how they expect you to ask for them when they don't list them in their catalog's? What size rear rubber are you running, I could't tell from the picture?

Well, I had some shank style lugs nuts that didn't fit the metric stock front studs so I drilled and pounded in the ARP studs.. Only my lugs nuts are 1/2" and the new studs are 7/16"..... So I need new front nuts. I knew the ARPS would be tight or they wouldn't fit, Jegs claimed thats the best they could do. Can't wait to see what the rear moser axles will need. I think those will be correct as the measurements were right on with what jegs had.
The rear rubber is 275 60 15. The rear wheel spacing is 4.5 They are 27" tall and 10.7" wide (tread). I just put those on to break in the car, my buddy calls them melt me offs. I should have used a lighter offset and used a wider tire. Any idea if you can use wheel spacers or some sort of shim for drag racing?
The front is 26 7.5 15

The front is 26 7.5 15 My rear axles (also Moser) have the 5/8" wheel studs and I wouldn't recommend anything else for drag racing. My theory is that if you go big then you won't have to upgrade in case you go to more power at a later date. I currently run 30x13.50x15 ET streets but will probably go with a 315 MT Drag Radials in the future as my buddy runs them on his Regal and really like them. My Regal as well as my buddies both have the frame notched and wheel well lips trimmed to get this size tire under the car. I don't remember what the wheel off set is but will check for you. I have always gone with the rule to fit the tallest tire that will fit as that will better control wheel spin.

Hmm, just measured and the rear studs are 1/2". Guess that will do for now. I would like to know your off set, the car is going to the chassis guy in "two to four weeks". That would be a good time to notch the frame. 30" tall would be nice. Did you do anything to the tubs?

if you notch the frame the 4.5 inch offset will work fine. you can use a insert and widen the factory wheel well and most wont even notice as far as the 30 inch tall tire depending on how tall the car sits and how much flexn the chassis will do you should easily work i run a 295/65/15 which is a solid 30inch plus tall tire you may have to do sum work on the outer quarter especialy on tha right side when or if the chassis twist

The directions says we can cut One coil from the springs..... Hope that helps. Had the same problem on a Malibu (G) body car after replacing the stock springs with Moroso ones. The car set up to high in the front end but I ran it that way for awhile. After cutting one coil out of the springs the car sat like I wanted and picked-up about 1 1/2 mile per hour in the quarter due to the wind going over the hood instead of under the car. Question though, when you say "middle rate" do you mean by front end weight? I thought that was how I figured which ones I needed and how the springs were rated. My Regal really sat low in the front with the iron headed BBC motor but my BBB motor with aluminum heads, etc, is about 200lbs less so I'm wondering if I will need to cuts some coils when I get it off jack stands. Word of caution though, you can do all the bouncing you want on the front end but I found from experience it won't really settle until you make a few passes down the track or a few burn-outs with it especially if it has been setting on jack stands for awhile. Rule of thumb,, check ride height, cut only one coil at a time, make additional adjustment as required.

Anyone need a set of 242lb Moroso springs for their GN , Regal? lol, as you can see from the picture below (Dan D taking a ride on the car) , the front is stiff!
We ordered these because my buddy's GN and t-type have the same rate 242's. We must have removed a bit more weight than we thought we would..

Yah, your right. They are doing it correctly, hangin' with the guys and having fun was the plan when I started. Now that I can see the light at the tunnel I feel like Running to the end!!!! That always makes things seem like they are going in slow motion.
Good idea, I will shoot for the interior this weekend and early next week. Then I'll shoot for one task at a time. I get fooled when too many loose ends pop up. Missing a part here so start the next. Missed a part there so start the next... etc. Still fun, still can see the light, but wow, lots more to do when you start from nothing.

You can get the smaller "pro cage" at 8.5 sec and slower for $1600 to 2500, depending on who you find. The 25.5 "funny car cage” is extra. That would be for the 7.5 cars and slower. But if you go Pro cage first, then upgrade later, the cost will end up being more as they hack out most of your pro cage and start over. After speaking with a couple of folks it was decided that spending the extra up front would be best in the long run.

lol, nope. The front header is still dark blue. The rest of the car is still black and gray. I guess I have a three tone Buick now? The body work won't be started until next winter hopefully. Someone had a question on how we set up the master kill and stuff:
The main kill switch is between the bat and everything else. In one pic you can barely see the two panels behind the MSD box (in the glove box) . One is pos and the other neg. The remote solanoid, switches, relays etc all get the power from that power strip. They were rivited to the firewall and they are actually from a boat store. The Fuel pump has short route right to the bat. But that is cut off when you hit the master kill. All the lights have factory positions.
It looks like the fuel pump gets power all the time, but if you look close the RELAY trips the pump. The relay is powered through the terminal strip behind the MSD box, which is after the master kill switch.
Hope that helps.
Also, were going to put the one wire alt to the back side of the kill switch....

Looking at the battery shut off switch... Does this car have a alternator? If it does and you don't cut the power off to the Alt. the car will still run.
I got a 4 post shut off switch and I cut the ground off to the battery with the large termials and cut the positive to the alternator with the two smaller termials. Car shuts off instantly. I have been to tracks that will make you run the car at tech and shut off the switch to test it.. And they require the car to shut off instantly. Running out of fuel cause you cut power to the pump will not past tech..
Car is really coming along nice. Looks like you are doing a heck of a job on it. When you thinking it will be ready?

Hmm, I think if we run the alt wire back to the bat everything after the switch should die, which has the ign, fuel etc. I will have to think about that one. Actually, all the power die's so far when we kill it? The MSD box die's with the switch, so if the alt just powers back to the bat and nothing else I would think it would work?
As for when will it smoke the tires? Lol, last month would have been good! I will try again for this month.....

The alternator will back feed everything, just like the old charging system test, where you would disconnect the battery and the car would still run if the alternator was any good. Taking away the ground from the battery and power from the altenator is a sure fire way of being sure it will shut off.. But you need to buy a four post shut off switch to do it.
Keep up the good work, looking foward to hearing more updates..

My headers hit the passenger side upper control arm and the was no notching it to gain clearence so I ended up getting tubeular upper control arms off E-bay nice and light and problem solved.
I am using a Griffin rad. that is a replacement for the turbo V6 rad., it fit with no mods. It has two 1" tubes, for a fan I used the new style Spal set up that fits the rad. perfectly from tank to tank and from top of core to bottom. The whole core is covered by the shroud. Got it off E-bay also(company called Universal www.universalpartsinc.com (http://www.universalpartsinc.com) phone# 866-730-7169 $249.00 included the pigtail harness) Spal part number 30102130 (dual 12" fans). They pull alot of amps so I had to run a relay to each fan. I have under drive pulleys and no thermostat and on a 90* day after a pass back in the pits the water temp is sitting at 180*.

lol, I got a call from Bobb saying the same thing, the rear end is fine. Super crappy tires just spin all the time! I cant shift it fast enough. I am still dialing in the rear brakes with the adjustable prop valve. It gets better each time. Rides much better with 15lb in the right air bag and 5 in the left. I put the stock rear sway bar on as well. Now when I smash the gas it only jumps across the other lane in the road once! lol, prior it was smash it, hit second then third as fast as the shifter guy could ratchet it, then start ****tin as the car cut across the two lanes every 30'... Going to try the HR Parts bar soon.
I need different rims and tires for the track. I had to use wheel spacers to get these tires to fit. Not too worried about it on the street as the thing will NEVER hook with these skins. But I don't want the spacers on the track...
Got any rims for sale?

Do I see the rod end next to the mounting lug on the housing with just a bolt holding it? My TR7 came with the same arrangement and were going to change it over to a clevis type arrangement where as the clevis fits over the housing lug and the bolt goes through both sides and the bolt has support on both sides. Just my two cents worth.

It wouldn't rev past 6400 rpm, it was bad air so it didn't help. I whacked the NOS on the street and had the same burb of way too much fuel. We loaded it on the trailer and I realized the fuel pres was at 8.5lb, we dynoed it at 7.4, maybe that and the air made it rich.

Ya, but I have a couple more tricks up my sleeve for the speed thing!! So we will get er faster as well. No 110 oct when running on the motor. 4-11's and probably a trans brake. Then spray it!
Same color, less the rust! Right now it is seven colors, lol. Shootin two tone, black and grey.
How is your project coming along?

Slow. Starting on the engine. Trying to pick out a cam and such. Did decide on the SPX and the Stage 2 T/A's. Honestly, I'm looking at BG 2011 as debute date. Trying to do this without borrrowing any money, credit card or otherwise, it can be one, just takes a little longer.

I found a new passenger today, my pit crew has a sence of humor. Also included will be my part of global warming along with what you should do to your trans before you even put it in. Hack the inspection cover "bosses" off for clearance. With them on you have to tilt the sucker on its side to get it in or out. Removed the tranny just slides right out, really.

No. If you had a spool and slicks I might be worried. Call Moser sometime and ask them what they think about your 8.5" . They seem to think it can be as strong as the old 12 bolt with the right parts.

I used the trans brake two weeks ago and went 4 rounds before I fell asleep at the light. Ran .020 lights then a .003 . decided to "slow down" I guess that is hard to do with the button. But hey, it works great!
I do however need to work on the carb a bit. It hits pretty hard with the button and the car will lift the front tires, then fall on its face for a bit, then hammer. I only had a 3000 rpm chip in as well.
The car wants to win pretty bad though. It ran 3 perfect dial in numbers!!!!
Next week wed we have a plan. Trans brake it with no chip in to see where it revs to. Drop the rpm by 500 with the chip. Then lean out the carb until it hammers all the way through. Then dump the bottle  into it for a pass!
Then the week following: Scrap the 373 rear end gear for 411. Send out the converter and go from 3400 to 4800- 5000 rpm... Whamo, drag the bumper

Hi.
Ran a 10.46 at 124 last night on the bottle, 175 shot. Blew the tires off the line, and again at 300'. Then I let off again at 800-1000' as I was bouncing the rev limiter at 6400. I forgot to up the chip before i left for the track. 1.7 60'.
The track sucked and was running slow so we didn't have time to change the car tune up. The best part about the "ride" was after the run I was looking for my phone. It flew out of my side pants pocket and shot under the rear seat and ended up against the rear firewall!!!! too funny.
We might try again next friday...

Mike your goin to catch hell trying to make it hook off the line. Buicks have so much tourqe that it always is tricky! Try leaving on motor and as you go into second grab the button(of course im assuming you have a button and not a wot switch) It always been worth 8-9 tenths for me that could put you where you want to be. What kind of tires are you running now since i know you lik to burn them up lol.

What up Dawg...
275 60 15 MT dr's. You know, I haven't really thought about that much, they might be toast? So far I have had some good feed back after that pass. Here are some idea's I / we will be doing before I head out again:
Drop 5+ heat ranges on the plugs. At 62 going to mid to high 50's (Champion)
Timing from 35 ish to 30-32
removed the rear air bags in the rear springs
changed the front shocks to 60-40 ds and 70-30 ps
change the oil, it was due
fix the trans brake and launch at 3/4 $. The NOS micro switch hits at 90% wot
Maybe add 20' of N.O.S. hose after the nos sol. to soften the hit
Find a NOs progressive controller,
BG is possible, but I doubt I'll make it. I have been racing Harescrambles and that along with Duck hunting season coming up in Oct my guess is my change pocket will be pissed at me by then :) ...

Not a great pass... the guy next to me ran 10.0. Not knowing what was going to happen I let him take off a bit before me.. What you can't see is how bad the tires blew off the track three times. All I did was lift off the gas 1/4 of the way, taking the secondary throttle plate off the NOS micro switch. Well, you can see it right off the line...
