Wanted: Info on Protect-o-plate

I was wondering when I am buying a car (classic), sometimes the seller says they've got the original protect-o-plate or something like that. Is this something that all classics or old cars came with and if so, how does one get this for their car?

The plate shows the name of the first owner of the car at the top of it in cleat tape stamped with letters kind of like the dialed tape labelers people used way too much a while back.

It was used by the dealer to keep track of warranty repairs...basically.

Here is a quote from the paper the plate is affixed to:

IMPORTANT TO BUICK OWNER
Affixed above is the Buick Vehicle
Protect-O-Plate. Your Buick Dealer
will install the necessary owner identi-
fication. Both are necessary should
warranty repairs be performed so
KEEP THIS CARD WITH THIS VEHI-
CLE AT ALL TIME.

There you have it.

I don't think you can get a replacement for you car...as the original had the original owner's name on it.

Yep, they all had them originally, you can't get them anymore, and I know some people who own '69 and '71 cars that would practically kill for the original P-O-P to their (un-documentable) car.

Hope your project is going well....

The 'Protect-O-Plate' is a metal tag that is attached to the inside cover of the 'warranty book' which is included with a new Buick. The warrenty book is the same size as the owners manual. In '66, it was called 'The Buick Owner protection Plan' book. If you got one with your car, great! If not, well, you'll probably never find it....contact previous owners and see if they might have it around somewhere....most likely it ended up in a landfill somewhere...

I think it is free too, or a $1.00 a copy of all the transactions within the specific county. You may have to go to more than one county. They are NOT supposed to destroy the records, but thay could be misfiled or lost, and you will be SOL. I traced a 66 Vette back to 1973 before the trail when cold. Good luck:TU:

your state/province will have records only for your vehicle as long as it was registered in your county/state. if the vehicle was unlicenced for 10 or more contiguous years, chances are the documents have been destroyed . if the vehicle was purchased from another state/province, u would have to check in that state/province .
however, there is an exception - if a lien has been registered against that vehicle and the lien has not been removed, the records for that vin could stay on file at the dmv forever.
