why does it always seem that whatever smiley I want to use Isn't displayed on the screen and must be selected from the "More" pop-up" ??

You would think it would have the smarts to record (board-wise) what smiley's are most frequently used and display those selections saving the less used ones for the pop-up

It's on my regular screen here, but I had to go to the 'more' screen to get this one!!! I guess it doesn't get used much?

I just memorized the ones I use - you can do them all with plain text.

why would a software designer be expecting BBS software to be constantly processing a concurrent db on graphics serves and making choices based on that? that isn't exactly the purpose of a BBS.

and wouldn't the constantly changing user choices, resulting in a constant reordering of the smiley list as well as a constant churn between those smilies which are borderline between regularly displayed and fetched, actually disrupt posters?

at least having one consistent setup you can familiarize yourself with it instead of going "damn, where's my favorite smiley, he's usually over here" all the time.

i would presume that the Smiley list is chosen at set-up by the SysAdmin and normally left alone. i'm sure you can petition Mike or Jim to modify it more to your taste.

perhaps a poll?

Gee ...doesn't it tally all sorts of other statistics ??

* Posts / threads since last visit
* percentage of posts owned per user
* Activity per user / forum category

.... should I continue ??

Ummm ... No ?? calculating the current list of statistics doesn't dirsupt now, does it ??

....and correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't it currently reorder the display of smileys ??

What procedure does this ?? is it just totally ramdom ??

Dang - you must have a different reality than most of us who do see a constant changing of the positions where said smiley's appear

i would presume that the Smiley list is chosen at set-up by the SysAdmin and normally left alone. i'm sure you can petition Mike or Jim to modify it more to your taste.

Presume again.....

While the list of available smiley's may is selected their position is not

I have never touched PHP code so I do not know its exact internal working methods and procedures - but - I've been around the block more than a few times which lets mededuce how certain tasks are accomplished

Dang - you must have a different reality than most of us who do see a constant changing of the positions where said smiley's appear

you may be right. i haven't been paying that much attention to them. :puzzled:

While the list of available smiley's may is selected their position is not

then this is the first board that i've ever been on for which this is true...

Dang - you must have a different reality than most of us who do see a constant changing of the positions where said smiley's appear

hmmmm. so your hypothesis is that there is already an algorithm in place and operational?

evidently, you need to use smilies which are more popular with the rest of the board members then. :Brow:

yes, i am pulling your leg with that last line. however, stipulating to your hypothesis, if you started a poll which consisted only of smilies you like the extra traffic on your selection set might well be enough to force most of them onto the default display, mightn't it?

so is that a 'yes' or 'no' vote on the question of an algorithm being in place and operational, Jim? :pp

i mean, you can't leave us hanging like this. we're on the verge of a major intarwebs flamewar, what with questioning others 'reality' and all. :blast: :spank: :af:  :ball:

why would a software designer be expecting BBS software to be constantly processing a concurrent db on graphics serves and making choices based on that?

That raises a question in my mind... why wouldn't a software designer simply memorize a dozen or so tags so as to not waste time moving a mouse? Opps, forgot about VB and .NET

Nice little rig you have there Alan. What's it for? I don't get to mess with the racks where I work, but I keep calling the big red kill button on the wall the "Easy Button," and the admins don't think it's too funny.

To be honest, I did like it better when all the smilies were shown at once. Though I rarely click one (just type). I've been known to post off-site Smilies as well.

All right, how about this? I just modified the UserCP to include "Favorite Smilies". Just go to your UserCP under "Settings and Options" and you'll find "Edit Favorite Smilies" at the bottom. Pick 20 of the ones you want!

How that for a fancy manure spreader!!!!

Thanks Mike ... but Im still curious as to how the generic smiley option picked what smileys appear on the main page as well as in the pop-up ... and what controls the ordering of the ones on the main page

The smilies were just picked out of a group from different sites. We can change them at any time. Just do like Sky Cust did. Post some smilies, I'll gather them up and put them in.

That was a great idea Mike, :idea2: letting us choose 20 of our favorites. And the new ones you just added are very cool! You can never have enough smilies. :TU:
