Start it up cold and everything is good, drive it a while then stop it for app. 10 minutes then restart and it knocks 3 or 4 times until it picks up oil. What could be the problem.Engine has been overhauled and runs good . Any help would be appreciated. Jim

If it's the lifters knockin then i'm pretty sure every old buick does this. Seems like every cruise i go to this lifter thing comes up and everyone seems to have the same problem. Sorry it's not a solution, Just didn't want you to feel alone. Kinda like AA, this is buick anonymous...............

How long since the engine overhaul? I had this problem in a Holden V8 after 500 miles of a recondition. Turned out to be filings in the oil galleries that were not cleaned out properly after machining and damaged the big end bearings, but only showed up when the car had been run a while.
What grade oil are you using? has the oil been changed since the overhaul? some engine builders use a lower grade oil for running in the engine. As mentioned a good filter often makes a difference.

Do you mean a knock as in a dull thud........or do you mean a clicking type sound as in rapping lifters? Rapping lifters on COLD starts is normal on Nailheads.

If it's a dull thud, it's not. Perhaps the main bearing clearances are too much?.......the machine shop did that to me, and thicker oil seems to help a little. I had .003" on my mains when I checked my crank before putting it in, and I'll bet now that it's been run a few thousand miles they're closer to .0035". (they told me it would be fine) :af:

Some of these engines came from the factory with .001" or .002" undersize standard bearings, and during crankshaft re-grinding on an overhaul, lazy macinists just grind off .010" from the crank without checking. The clearance can end up at the high end of the specs, which may or may not be ok, but they will knock, especially on hot re-starts or when changing the oil filter. Mine does.  :spank: :Dou:
