I have a Buick lesabre 400 custom convertible, I have some trouble with the fuel gauge, Iīm had bean told that I should disconect the wire from the tank unit and ground it, then the gauge should show "FULL" but it dosnīt, but if I disconnect the fuel gauge from the dashboard and connect one + and one - it goes to "FULL", here is now my question, on the back of the fuel gauge it is three contacts, whitch of them should go to the tank? And is the wire to the tank + or -.:eek2:

I've been messing with this stuff just like you. You say your fuel gauge doesn't go to 'Full' when you ground that wire. But what exacly does happen? Does you fuel gauge go to 'Empty'? In that case your sending unit is broken.

My fuel gauge stayed at the 'Full' mark ALL the time. And I did the same thing (ground the tan wire coming from the sending unit), and in my case my gauge went to 'Empty'. So, my sending unit is a goner.

I haven't taken the fuel gauge out of my dash yet. But personally I think there's nothing wrong with it (not in my case, and not in your case) because the needle is moving. It reacts on something.

Yes the gauge has 3 contacts. One is ground (black), another one is coming from the fusebox and is only 'hot' when you turn the key. The third one is the wire coming from the sending unit.

Hope this helps any

Hi, if the fuel gauge is moving, but fails to register, it's the sending unit in the tank. It could be a collapse float or a bad unit.
