i have a 78 regal with a chevy 305, i bought it from a guy not running, i replaced the starter, ignition switch, cap, coil and button, plugs wires fuel pump intake, timing chain,

now the car will crank up if i play with the distributor a lil and it will stay running in park, but when i put it in gear it cuts off and when i try to restart it it might start back up and it might backfire out the carb

oh and if anyone knows where i can get a tail light and a signal lense for this car lmk

check your cat convertor for being plugged(take off and start)
if not pull the valvecovers and check for flat cam

there is no cat converter its just rusty str8 pipes and cherry bombs...

how do i check for the flat cam? what do i look for....

it smokes and smells like its running too rich could a bad carb be the cause of this?

Some checks: Are you sure the the timing chain was installed right? Did you set the valves correctly? Is your timing right? Spark plug wires on correct? Any vaccuum leaks????

A backfire out of the carb usually means the timing is too retarded.

????????

Retarded timing means your spark is firing after TDC. Check in to what lilbowtie has suggested.
