car has now been turned off for over 20 hours. I went out to see if there were any obvious electrical shorts and discovered that there is power going to the coil and the coil is very warm (and the key is turned off-in fact not in switch at all) should this be???:

It appears that you have a defective Ignition switch, try disconnecting all wires from switch, (insulate all wires from contacting anthing, or each other), then check wire to coil for current flow, should be none, result Defective switch.

The coil is fed with 2 wires, the one from the ignition and also the one from the starter solenoid. I would disconnect the wire from the solenoid and see if that is the culprit. There is a little brass finger that may be bent so it is in constant contact ,and that could cause the problem

Yup, You are definitly getting feed back from either a short, or a defective ign sw. The coil being warm shows that it has been 'on' all that time.
Start checking your ign. circuit wires, you will find it.
