Backspacing is the measure of the distance from the back of the rim (the part on the inside that you don't see) to the hub where it mates with the axle.

So the less backspacing I have, the deeper the lip will appear on the wheel, and also with less backspacing I can put a bigger wheel on because it will stick out of the side of the car rather than rub the car.

I want to run 15x8 wheels, but I want them to come all the way out to the fender and not be tucked away under it at all. So am I to understand that a 15x8 rim with a 5" backspacing will stick further under the fender than one with a 3" backspacing?

Does anyone know offhand what backspacing to use on a 15x8 rim to have it come out to the fender, without sticking out of the car?

Basically yes - see here: https://www.rsracing.com/tech-wheel.html#backspace and

You will usuallly get a better response if you post a thread with a speciifc question in the subject like: "What is the correct backspacing for a 15X8 wheel on a 70?"
