After a year of searching,I have located a set of GS specific wheels for my 1986 GS, but they need the clearcoat removed and re-done. Can anyone suggest a place or how to do this as to not ruin the rims??? The rims are on the West coast and I want to have them shipped here first. I'd really prefer an East Coast place,if possible.

i accidently sprayed carb cleaner on the wheels on my brothers el camino once. it did a great job of getting that stuff to peel up! :Brow: probably not the way to go though.
whoever is going to re-do the clear coat would probably know best unless youre doing it yourself

come to think of it, when i was chemically pealing the paint off my car, i ran across a number of products to remove clear-coat. maybe check out your local hardware store for something in a spray can thats mild enough not to damage the aluminum.

i've done it on some american racing outlaw lookalikes. use the airplane remover from walmart. it actually says ariplane remover:Brow: it is "low tox or fume" or something now. the old stuff worked better, but this is still good and cheap.

I removed the clear coat from some factory aluminum chevy rims with zip strip. Bubbled up and took it off down to the metal. Worked great. Hope that helps.
Thanks Rick

I use brake fluid (dot3?) for alot of my small parts, works great and doesn't screw with the metal.

I wetsand the clearcoat off wheels I polish. I use 400 grit, then finish with 800 grit. Then I polish them like chrome.

I think I am going to have a place re-do them for me. I am waiting to get the wheels shipped than will send them to Philly area and have Wheels America wheel refinishing do them. The guy I am getting the rims from sent me pics of before and after showing how the do. I was impressed..See for yourself..
