View Full Version : aftermarket ignition
I have the stock points in my car, and I'm considering installing the Pertronix Ignitor. I've heard mostly good things about this, but I'm interested in hearing what anyone from the board might offer. Thanks.

If you want a rock solid points alternative, check out www.davessmallbodyheis.com - Dave builds a top quality distributor.:bglasses: He's done a bunch of conversions for board members here.
He can be found over at www.buickthunder.com under the username IgnitionMan.

Check out the one wire unit which will keep it stock looking at :
www.Lectriclimited.com or www.wiringharness.com
Many units do do allow the stock hook up.
Thanks to you both. The car is numbers matching so I'd like to keep it as stock as possible. I'll definitely check out those sites. Thanks again, Ed.

I was going to use a Petronix but after checking the alternatives,(like Jim
was showing) I went with the one wire setup and it works great and noone
knows you aren't using conventional points. Pete

I have a small body HEI conversion done by Dave and it looks stock unless you stand on your head and look real hard. he also recurves the distributor for optimum performance.

I did the Pertronix conversion years ago, and it ran awesome. The only downside I encountered was on the ring the holds the magnets to the bottom of the rotor. There a clear plastic cover that goes over the magnets, which came off mine and I eventually slung one of the magnets, which resulted in a miss. I changed plugs, wires, the whole nine yards, only to eventually find the missing magnet. Frustrated, I stuck the points back in and drove it.

I did the Crane version, It runs off the stock resistor wire. Only took a few minutes to install. So far has worked like a champ. I also installed a blaster coil that has no internal ballast resistance. The Crane Cam version has an adjustable rev limiter too. Not that that is something I really need with an automatic..

I would recommend either the Petronix or the Crane. I've got the Petronix on my Corvette (3+ years) and the Crane on the Buick (1.5+). Both work great, no problems at all. The Corvette fires up easier than the Buick but I think that's more a function of the state of the carburetors than the ignition. The Buick has an Edelbrock carb that benefits from priming to start after sitting for more than a few days and goes way rich when putting your foot in it.
Thanks Jay, thanks Joe. Is the Crane model the XR1 or something? A local mechanic suggested that to me, and I saw it in JEGS for like $65. Ed
Finally went with the Pertronix LS version, 2 wires, but no washers or rings. Hooked up perfectly to the lobe holes for the condenser. Started right up, now onto the next project.....thanks to all.:TU:

I tried both Pertronix. The ring type worked but I do not like the clearance issues which are different near the screw mounting areas where the opposite areas have sag and change the clearance. the second type never worked from the start. No spark so I sent it back.

The Crane works awesome and is easy to install with no mods to the distributor. I still keep points and condenser in the glovebox just in case.
