Hi Guys,
I know this question has been beaten to death, but I just want
to make sure before I purchase the rims.I have a 72 Sportswagon
that I am buying new rims for.I am buying Vintage wheel works V45,
the 8" are 4/12 back space which I know will fit,but they also have 9 1/2"
with a 5 1/2" backspace. The dealer told me they wouldn't fit in the rear, but I have read on here that some of you are running 9 1/2" rear.I do not want to modify the inside lip of the rear wheel well. Can I go 9 1/2" in the rear , I will be putting 8" on the front.Cheers Curtis:beer

I can't speak for a Sportwagon because I'm not sure if they use the same wheel wells and rearend placement as a Skylark/GS, but a 9.5" wide rim with 5.5" of backspacing would fit in a Skylark/GS.

My recommendation would be to take the car to the wheel place and take some measurements with the wheel you have on it with regards to space available both at the wheel well lip on top and behind the wheel by the frame. Then, knowing that wheel and it's dimensions, you should be able to see if the 9.5" wheel will fit properly. I have a hunch that it will as long as you don't mount a 325mm tire on it. I'd bet a 295 tire would fit quite nicely.
