I am going to have to replace the ignition switch in my daughters car, a 1990 vintage Olds 88 with tilt wheel and the dimmer switch on the column. I have never had to replace one inside the column, and I need to know what I have to do to get this done. Anybody out there that can give me a rundown of the correct procedures? Thanks, Randy

If I remember correctly, the switch is mounted on the column under the dash.
There is a actuator rod connected to it.
1) Disable air bag system if equipped.
2) Disconnect ground at battery.
3) Drop and support the column.
4) Key in the unlocked position - disconnect rod from switch.
5) Remove switch and bracket from column.
Install new switch in bracket and reverse procedure.
Hope this helps.

Randy:
Replacing the actual switch is pretty easy if it's anything like my truck. Basically the procedure outline already. You just have to make sure the new one is oriented the same as the old one.
If you mean the lock cylinder for the ignition, you need to remove the steering wheel, depress the lock plate (locks the wheel when the switch is in the lock position) and remove the snap ring. There is a screw on the right side of the column that holds the cylinder in place. Remove the screw and the cylinder comes right out. Reverse order to go back together.
Easy peasy.

Thanks guys. I was hoping this wasn't going to be one of those jobs that require $100 worth of specialty tools and a whole weekend of aggravation.

Dude, check at the salvage yard for a complete column and steering wheel. Replace the whole thing, i used to do that instead of replacing the smart pod, she always was ripping off the smart pod only took 30 minutes to replace the whole thing in her Oatsmobile.....her car didnt have bags tho.
Just looking at it form another perspective.
Good luck
