Okay, I don't have a key, how do I get the ign switch out?

On a 56 Special.

I have heard of being able to stick a paper clip in the small hole in the switch and turning the key, and the entire switch should slide out - but what do you do if you don't have a key?

Turn the switch to the ACC position and put a paper clip into the hole and light push on the paper clip and pull the cylinder out, AL.

I don't think my switch has an ACC position - from what I can tell, it just has On/Off. It might come down to using a giant drill if I get mad enough!

Okay, a mistake on my part, failed to read the part about not having a key. In that case you will need to see a lock smith, AL.

Take one of the door locks out and check for a code. Take the code or the door lock to a lock smith. Pray the door lock key is the same as the ignition!

Some dealerships, that were in business back then, have a key ring with hundreds of keys. Keep trying til you find one that works, then duplicate it. Another way is to borrow extra keys from all your buddies and hope. No cheap easy way

Yep get the numbers off the trunk lock or the door locks and take them to a lock smith and he can cut a key for it.....Dont hang a drill to the lock.... it will be hard to find another one.... before you drill it , call a locksmith it will be money well spent...

I will check the door locks for a number. I need the keys for those too, so I had to consult a locksmith anyway. I just really hope the keys for the door and ignition are the same!

ask someone on here if there door key fits the ignition for that year of car,if it does take door lock out,should be a some letters and numbers on the cylinder,should be able to cut one pretty easy.i just looked this up in my old locksmith books,key should be the same,key is a b-10,door and igniton the same,and trunk and glove box the same.1935-66 takes same keys.it will be a four digit number on clyinder.if you gave me the numbers i should be able to cut a key and send it to you.

The 56 is a one key car. That includes the glove box. I recommend ou pull that one first ( take the whole door ) to a good locksmith.

yes all the locks will be the same key,but they wont work everything,ignition and door locks are keyed the same,trunk and glove box are different cuts on the key,there will be 2 keys for the car that look alike but with different cuts.

Section 10-64 of the 56 Service manual (available on Budd's 1956 buick site)details the method of removing the lock cylinder. I have used this method using a key that fit but would not unlock the cylinder.
Try this if other methods fail and then replace the cylinder if needed.

just for everyones info,i made a key for this guy and it worked the ignition and the doors,there is a seperate key for glove box and trunk.2 keys for the car,keys will look the same but will not fit all locks.i think hes happy.

Ray's key worked like a charm. It worked in both doors and the ignition switch - which I managed to get out of the dash today. For some odd reason, it also worked in the trunk lock (which was sitting in a can in the trunk.)

I had the same problem as V8punkrocket

My 53 has no keys and I´ve used the trunk lock to make a new key. that key hast fit on the trunk, both doors and the glove box, but the ignition lock was another one or has been removed.
i went with the whole dashboard to a locksmith with a big shop:laugh: and he destroyed the lockcylinder by removing a bress pin on the side of the lock cylinder. So I could removed the complete ignition switch from my dash and could drill the lock out.
