View Full Version : 1957 Dynaflow Interchange

Restoring my '57 Century and found that someone was into the Dynaflow and even left some parts out. Need to find a replacement. A fairly local establishment about 250 miles away states they have a '58 Dynaflow and they were directly interchangeable. Since shipping is going to cost about $100.00 alone, I am a little hesitant. Can you experts out there tell me if this is true? I can't seem to find much data on the subject. The '56 is not interchangeable because the bell housing is different I guess. The '59 went to a different type of transmission and would be interchangeable with some linkage changes I am told.
Your comments please.

My interchange book says:

'57-'58 Dynaflow's directly interchange less U-joint. The '58-'59 Triple Turbine will interchange complete with the converter by altering the shift controls. The '59-'60 Twin Turbine will interchange but check the converter and rear bearing retainer and switch as necessary, switch rear yokes and change the linkage as necessary.

So you should be able to use the '58 Dynaflow without any problems.

Well thank you for answering Sean. I feel more confident now in getting that '58 Dynaflow. According to what you say in '58 they could have had either the Dynaflow or the Triple Turbine. I hope they know how to tell the difference between the two. Do you know if there is an easy way to spot the difference?

I think you can check the case numbers. My interchange lists these numbers as:

1168616 is '57-'58 Dynaflow
1180228 is '58 triple turbine
1189239 is '59 triple turbine

It should say Dynaflow (I think they all say Dynaflow) on the top of the transmission case with the numbers below. You might have to scrape it off to see it. Call them and get the numbers. If it doesn't match any of the ones above, post it here and I will see if I can find it.
