I took the carb apart and put in a new kit. One problem I am having is that the small ball check that goes in the bottom of the pump cylilnder is stuck in its seat. This is the little steel ball a little smaller than a BB. I have tried soaking, magnets and compressed air to get it to pop out, but it won't come.

What will or won't the car do if the ball is left in place like it is? Any suggestions on how to get the little bugger out?

Thanks

If you find the fuel route that goes under the ball, then maybe blow back with compressed air. I've got mine in bits also and the ball just came out. BTW, do the re-build kits come with new ball and retainer ?

Guys, there should be a new ball in the kit....the purpose of a ck ball in a carb is to stop back flow... it should be loose enough to move, if only slightly.... in the bottom of a accellerator pump , it stops the back flow of fuel and makes the fuel take a different route and squirt out thru the accellerator pump nozzles.... so the fuel has to be able to come in around it and it has to be free enough that it can seat back down when pressure is applied to the pump plunger.....if it cant do that the accelerator pump will not work at all....the engine will die when the throttle is opened, every time.....because it will get a big gulp of air without a fuel shot from the accel. pump to cover it.....

The rebuild kit had a new ball. I just couldn't get the old one out. The carb on the car was shot, so I picked this up as a replacement.

I did finally get the ball out by removing the aluminum plug directly behind the ball. This exposed the ball from the backside and all it took was a slight poke and it dropped out. These aluminum plugs seal up holes on the carb where ports were drilled out in the casting.

I checked the new ball several times and it does not stick. I have the carb 99% back together and hope to have it on the car tomorrow. I still have pletny to do before the car is on the road though.

Before you put it back together completely, can you check for me the main jet sizes in the primary and secondary sections.

Thanks, Ken. 1954

Ken, Hope this is what you are looking for.
The primary meter jets are marked 120 160
The secondary meter jets are marked 120 158

I can only assume these are correct. By the way, this is a 2197S Carter carb which I think is off a 1955 Buick.

Thanks for going to the trouble mate :TU:
My primary jets are 120 / 224 and the secondary 120 / 165 .
I wonder if somebody has installed the incorrect jets or the numbers changed for 1955 ?

Just learnt that the carb on my engine is off a 1956.

I'm not sure what the differences are for the mid '50's WCFB carbs. I have seen rebuild kits listed for multi years, and others for specific carb numbers. I'm guessing that they are functionally the same. Maybe someone has more information.
