View Full Version : “GSX Reunion” at the 2009 BPG Event

OK guys,
One of the things we have been working on are ways to make the BPG Nationals special for each year. The idea is if we offer something unique we can change them from being a regular Buick race/show event into a "must attend" event that people will want to both see and be a part of.
With this in mind we joined forces with Mark Macoubrie of the GSX Registry and created an event within an event. I will post both a Word file, and the text for the file below for those that cannot open it.
I hope you will be as excited as we are about this, and come to our event and join in the fun. Thank you.
Duane
WANTED
DEAD OR ALIVE
We want your X’s………not your ex-wives or girlfriends but your GSX’s.
The BPG, in conjunction with the GSX Registry, is planning a GSX reunion. This one time event will be held on Saturday August 1st during the 2009 BPG Nationals at National Trails Raceway outside of Columbus Ohio. Our goal is to have 50 plus real GSX’s on display. This would be the largest gathering of GSX’s since they were first built, and may generate national coverage.
This will be a non-judged event and we are looking for everything from a Concours show car to something that looks like it just got pulled out of a barn. Regardless of the condition of your GSX, if it’s got 4 wheels and is a real GSX then we want it on display. Bring your GSX and celebrate one of the most powerful and stylish muscle cars to ever drive down the streets of hometown America.
We will be handing out a commemorative license plate to each and every owner that has a vehicle in this special event. These plates will be similar to the ones given out at shows like the “Concours de Elegance” and can either be put on the cars, or would be suitable for framing. These plates will not be sold, and will ONLY be available to those that bring a car to the event. (Trust me you are going to want one.)
All GSX’s in attendance for the reunion will be displayed in a special place of honor on both sides of the entrance road just outside of the Car Show area. For those that also want their cars judged we will have two options, they can enter them in the Concours Class (400 point judging), or they can be entered in the Street/Driven Class (100 point judging). Both of these classes will also be positioned outside of the show area, so all the cars will be displayed together.
This type of event may never come again, so come on out, bring your car, and enjoy the party. The following people have confirmed they are attending, and more will be added to the list as we hear from them;
Troy Acton, 1970 Saturn Yellow 455 4-speed
Engie Bauza, 1970 Apollo White Stage 2 equipped 4-speed
Brad Conley, 1970 Pearl White GSX Prototype
Brad Conley, 1971 Black Stage 1 automatic
Jeff Fortner, 1971 Platinum Mist 455 automatic
Richard Garland, 1971 Cortez Gold 350 automatic
Larry Gibson, 1970 Saturn Yellow 455 automatic
Duane Heckman, 1971 Stratomist Blue Stage 1 automatic
Bill Lagna, 1970 Saturn Yellow Stage 1 4-speed
Mark Macoubrie, 1970 Saturn Yellow 455 automatic
Bill Sales, 1970 Apollo White Stage 1 automatic
To get in on the fun contact Duane Heckman @ 610-544-6776 after 7:30 PM EST and get your name added to the list. The only cost associated with the reunion will be the entrance fee to the BPG Event. GSX owners will not be required to be BPG members but will have full access to enjoy all the other awesome activities at the show, race event, swap meet and clinics. More information will follow as the event approaches. See everyone at the track.

As Duane and I have talked about I am super stoked about this event. I have only dreamed about getting as many GSX together in one spot as possible and having the GSX show up at another All Buick event makes it that much sweeter for all the owners. This will be coming out in the GSX Registry update at the beginning of the year and I hope to talk to everyone in the registry about coming.
If you own a GSX, this will be the one event that you will want to have your car at and the one event that we really want you to be at with your car. You have almost a year to so start planning now.
If there is one car I am passionate about, this is the car and this will be "THE EVENT" for every GSX owner.

I am sad to say member 1988 will not be there . What is the connection of the BPG that all events are always in Ohio ? Perhaps there would be a better turnout if it was in the middle like say Dallas:laugh: . I could even live with Arrowhead Stadium. Mark twist someones arm will ya,
location not withstanding, sounds like an awesome time and idea.

Try to keep it open and start saving now? I was really hoping for a Texas Convoy to join. There are a few of you down there to make the trip. Looks like a 16 hours from Dallas. At least its not Oregon.
What would be cooler than parking your car next to another Cortez Gold GSX that is going to be there?

Don,
It would be AWESOME to get a 1972 GSX to the show and your color combo is so unique it will be cool to see. I am sorry I have not made it over to St Louis to check out the car. I have been working tons of OT this summer. It would also be very cool to have Darrel at the show and to get national coverage of the event.
Looking forward to seeing you there,

Dean,
I think one advantage we have that you were missing is the popularity of the intranet and the v8buick board. I have also been able to grow the GSX registy to over 200 owners in the last 10 years by carring on the concept you orginally started in the 80s. Both of these styles of media will really help get the word out.
It is going to be AWESOME ! ! !

Are you kidding? We live in Norman...OU is Always #1 around here! :TU: We won't be at the game...but we'll be watching!! We have season tickets but have sold them every season for the last 4-5 years. Just getting too lazy to fight the crowd. We usually get together with friends and just hang out and watch on TV. When they shut down O'Connells it took our "reason for being" I guess.
Regarding the trailering. We have two 2-car enclosed Featherlite trailers. As I mentioned, we will pull one of them with our (correction, MY :bglasses: ) GSX to the event and will have an empty spot. The other trailer, I'm not sure, but could be available. It's what my husband does...he and his brother haul cars all across the country...mostly high end exotics for dealers but he does a lot of muscle/classic cars as well. It will just depend on what they have going on that week but the the 2nd trailer could be available also.

I hope can go. It's a long trip for me but it would be worth it. I have never seen another real GSX at any local show or cruise I have been to besides the GS Nationals. Any chance of someone making a good quality DVD of the reunion with car profiles, interviews, history, ect???

Glad we had a chance to talk for a while last night Duane. I will try to convince Dad to tag along since he is the original owner of the GSX. I should be able to make it by late Friday night/early Sat. morning depending on my schedule but I will make it on time. I plan on driving it to the event so I will be able to rack up about a year worth of miles on one trip...lol. I will look under the drivers side dash and in the passenger seat springs for those sheets you told me about. Keep us up to date and if I happen to find any info on Vicky Jo and/or the whereabouts of her '71 GSX I will let you know.

846 made and you're got 54 coming already... That's amazing. It's turning into a "be there or be square" sort of thing.
I would like to see armed guards in the parking lots, or at least 24 hour guards. If the security is good I'll consider hauling mine up too. Al F's old 70GSX455 10-10 4spd, #1 in the GSX registry.
If we're bringing millions of dollars worth of cars there, security arrangements need to be really really good.
Duane
10-14-2008, 12:03 AM
Mike,
I believe armed guards will be at the track throughout the night and will also be at the host hotel and associated parking lot. This will be verified and put into place before the event.
We are also discussing having an option for an indoor event in case of rain. We will be talking with the chamber of commerce about this later.
We have people coming from all up and down the east coast, to as far away as Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Kansas, Idaho, and as far away as Calgary in Canada. This is going to be something to see.

LOL - Seriously, if you want to drive up here, that would be fine...would save on the cost of fuel going to Dallas and back, but really that is totally up to you. Is James from the Dallas area? his profile just says North Texas. If so, that would be 3 from Dallas if he jumps in and would work out perfectly. We'll get the details worked out as the time draws nearer. I'm offering to donate the equipment to get the cars to this special event and not looking to make money off it...just split the cost of fuel to get them up there and back. But....Maybe for my generous, big-hearted contribution one of you can buy my beer that I will be needing Saturday night! LOL - Dinner would probably be cheaper!

Yes, I am from the Dallas area as well. I have a 24' enclosed trailer, but if it will cut the costs for all of us then it only makes sense to load up the 2 car enclosed Featherlites and head on up there. Will my 3/4 ton single axle Duramax haul one of those Featherlites with two heavy cars in it? If not, do you guys also have two trucks as well? BTW, The beer won't be a problem. :beer

Well, if you're going through OK rather than straight out of Dallas to Columbus then you probably won't be on I30 going through Memphis. But if you do it's a little shy of the half way point from Dallas.
Nevertheless, if you or anybody else heading to Columbus finds their route through Memphis let me know via PM and maybe we can work out a caravan from there.

Hmmmm, maybe I should repaint mine 10-10 so we would have a better variety! :idea2:
Sounds like a plan! I'm not sure about your truck, it may do the job but I'm not sure. The trailers are both 44' aluminum but I don't know what they weigh or what they weigh loaded with GSX's. We do have two trucks, both are 1-ton dually diesels that we use to pull them. We also have a Toter which would be my preference to use to pull one of them. We have it up for sale though so it might not be around by August. It looks like this will need to be a 2-day haul and I worry about the trucks/trailers sitting outside hotels attended...that's why I like the Toter, so we can keep an eye on them. We've got plenty of time to get it all worked out where it works best for all concerned. It should be fun! After seeing that Mike may want to join up with us in Memphis pulling his X on an open trailer, it almost makes me wish they were all going open...wouldn't that be a sight to see going down the road!! (note I said "almost"...my X doesn't get along well with bugs OR water :)

Mike, that would be great. I guess we will know better as the time draws nearer as to whether it works best to leave through Dallas or OKC. If we do go through Dallas, it would be about an 18-19 hour trip for us and maybe Memphis would be a good overnight stop? Seeing that you are pulling your car open, it gave me another idea. We also have a 3-car open trailer. If 2 of the Dallas cars are cars that the guys don't mind hauling open, we could use the 3-car trailer instead of one of the enclosed trailers and go through Memphis and load your car up as well. The front car is going to gather the bugs though! Not sure anyone wants that position. Lots of options to think about...

First one I had was non-Stage white automatic. Don't know the VIN. It was traded for a '65 Riv GS back around 1982 was before the things got so vauluable.
Second one was a Stage 1 white automatic with NOM. It was traded to Jim Turner in Bronte, TX for cash and a '87 Turbo T in the late '90's I think. VIN on that one was 446370H266569. Don't know where that one ended up either. Last I heard it was undergoing restoration, but it's been a while.
Doesn't matter that much anyway, because there's no way the wife would let me buy car that's worth more than the house we're in! :dollar:

There are no "extra charges" just to participate in the reunion, only the normal entrance fees.
Duane
12-31-2008, 12:21 AM
Mike,
The only cost associated with the GSX Reunion would be the entrance fee for a spectator, which I believe is $20 for non-members and $15 for members per day. (I will verify the amounts.)
This gets the owner/driver, plus car through the gate and into the reunion. You also get a commerative License plate for the event, as long as you bring a car. The rules are easy, 1 car gets 1 plate, 2 cars get 2 plates. Plus you get to enjoy everything else going on at the event for the entire day.
Now if you so desire, you can also enter the cars in either the Concours or Street/Driven classes of the car show. If you do this you would pay the costs for entering the car show, and will have the possibility of earning a car show award along with the commerative GSX Reunion License plate.
As far as "is anything special .....planned yet" I take it you mean above and beyond the event itself. Well many of the guys have asked me to go over their cars personally, to help verify correct parts etc, so they will be bringing their cars to the event on Friday as I will not have the time to do it on Saturday (show day). We will probably also have some type of "Restoration Clinic" on Friday which may turn out to be basically the whole day. (With so many examples to choose from it should be easy.)
The club is also considering having a dyno available for Friday and Saturday (once the car show is finished) plus there will be Racing, the Car Show, and everything else we normally have.
I believe that between everyone talking/looking at the cars, plus whatever the (hopefully) Magazine people need, as far as pics etc, we will easily fill up the better part of a morning/early afternoon.

I'm thinking that it's getting close to 20%.
Duane
01-08-2009, 01:33 AM
Mike,
They made 846 cars during the 70-72 model years so we are approaching 10%.
If you figure half of them being gone, then we are getting close to 20% of the ones that are left. That's an incredible figure when you take into account the fact that some people own more then one and can only bring one car, plus some owners live so far away that it's hard to bring a car to the event.
The owners bringing their cars are making a serious commitment as far as both time and money, and I commend them one and all for doing it.

Duane,I agree that the number of cars that hopefully will be attending is 20% which is amazing. Whatever it is, people or things, a rule of 10 usually applies. With the aforementioned amount that will be attending(which would be above the rule of 10),I would say it would be an excellent turnout.

I know I have more than 10 years of dedication to discovering how many Buick GSX exist and who owns them which pales in comparision to the time Duane and many others have been intersted and promoted the Buick community. The idea of a Renunion has been in my mind for several years and I seriously cannot even fathom 75 Buick GSX in one place at one time. That is larger than many small town car shows I have attended.
Being a GSX owner for many years I can tell you that I have typically been the only GSX, sometimes been one of a couple, never have I been more than a few and usually I am the only Buick at the events I have attended.
It will be a sight unparrelled in my GSX experience.

Hotel info is something that Brad and I will be working on late next week for both the BPG Club members and for the GSX Reunion.
We are scheduled to meet with the Chamber of Commerce people, track personnel, and talk to various hotels in the area. We are going to discuss many things, including negotiated rates, security, etc, and will update everyone.
I don't believe there will be a "preferred hotel" for the GSX reunion, as there are so many cars, but we will see.

We have never been to the BPG event before and I saw a list of hotels on the BPG forum. The host hotel (Hampton) is sold out.
Just wondering... asking those of you who have been there, which hotel would you feel is the best one to book besides that. We'll leave our truck & trailer at the track so we'll only have our GSX to park. These were listed as having security:
Holiday Inn Express
Quality Inn
Red Roof Inn
Courtyard by Marriott
Thanks! Paul

We have never been there before either. After reviewing hotel ratings of the recommended hotels, we made our reservations at the Holiday Inn Express. We plan to leave our truck/trailers at the track also and either drive the GSX  to the secured hotel parking or pull it in the trailer for the night.

About the hotels,
I have never stayed anywhere except at the host hotel, but the Holiday Inn Express is between the host hotel and the "meet & greet" we have on thursday night. The hotel is on the main drag through town and from what the chamber of commerce people say, the new management is quite nice.

Duane or Brad correct me if I am wrong but I believe the track will have armed guards in place. You may be able to put your car in the trailer at night and drive your tow vehicle to the hotel. That is my plan currently. I also have purhcased a california wheel lock to put on the trailer so it will not disappear.

You are correct, Mark. National Trail Raceway is providing ARMED SECURITY, so the safest place for your auto is at the track. Most of the hotels are providing security, but I am sure they are not "packing".
OK, now for the legal disclaimer (shame we have to do this, but it is the 2000's after all)...While we all will do our best to help secure your auto, the BPG or NTR cannot be held responsible for any loss.

How about a GSX only race segment? Surely quite a number of the 83 will want to hit the track. Wouldn't at least 16 would want to go for some runs? It would be awesome to see that many GSXs in action and in the staging lanes. Another never before and probably never again aspect of the meet. Get the cameras out, and some magazine coverage on that one. I'd throw my hat in, although I doubt I'm a good enough driver to win it especially with the variabilities of my 4spd and my old(er) age. Back in the day, I could bang the gears pretty consistently but I'm not so sure about that now...

Just counted 2 more, we now have 85 cars confirmed for the event.
That's 10% of all the 70-72 GSX's that were built.
To answer some questions. I don't think I heard from Curtis yet, but if he can bring his car that would be great. Have him give me a call some night when he has time.
I will see about some GSX racing, but there may not be time to do this. The Car Show/GSX Re-Union will take up quite a bit of the Saturday schedule, and I already know the magazine people are interested in getting various shots of the cars, which will entail some rearranging of vehicles. Adding more to the schedule would take a bite out of the racing time slots, and that is something I don't know if we could do.
However I am sure if you want to race your "X" in one of the racing classes that could easily be arranged.

Duane
06-07-2009, 09:15 AM
Rob,
When I add Tothna to the list that would give us 90 cars.
We are working on a schedule of events and should publish them soon. For the car show people we will be having at least 1 resto clinic at the track on Friday.
One of the topics will be about sub-assemblies. Knowing whether a part was installed singly or as part of a sub-assembly often dictates how the part was painted/plated on the finished vehicle, and gives insight as to the methods & parts used to attach these pieces. This is an important topic that is very mis-understood. We will also talk about the importance of NOS vs original pieces, and should have a few examples there. (I believe Mark Reeves will be bringing some door handle examples for comparisons.) We may even have a couple talks from some very special guests. (More on that later.)
Also on Friday, I have been asked by several owners to go over their GSX's to determine if various parts are original or not. Quite a few of these cars are either unrestored or semi-restored and the current owners are looking for some info.
As far as after hours activities,
Thursday night we do a "meet & greet" in the parking lot next to the "Ruby Tuesdays" in town. We get between 30-40 cars to show up and just plain have a good time. (This year we expect a lot more cars to be there.)
The next two nights, everyone goes out to dinner and then travels to the various hotel parking lots looking at/talking about cars. (Just like we do at the GSCA Nats) We often have inprompto resto-clinics going on at the host hotel, because I am often asked originality questions and soon after that the car hoods in the parking lot start going up. My wife Beth laughs about this every year and says I am teaching class again.
Tothna,
There are 3 different "build sheets" that can be found for a 70 GSX. When you call Monday night I can tell you what they look like and where to find them.

Thanks for the overview of what to expect.
I am planning/hoping to arrive Thursday mid afternoon. I really hope the weather is great as I am looking forward to driving the car around town to the various "meet & greet" activities.
Add me to the list of those who will ask you to look their car over carefully in an effort to understand "what else" I need to do in order to continue getting it closer to original.
I think I need to try to find a hotel for the event as it may too late to get into the host location.
Looking forward to a fun time!!

I pulled the tank out of my GSX last weekend to replace the sending unit. I found the Production Order Body-Final duct-taped to the extreme passenger side top of the tank under the sound deadening pad. It was in remarkably good condition for a 39 year old sheet of paper, every line is legible. I was thrilled to say the least. This is the second sheet I have found in the car.
See you all in August.

Louie,
At this time we have
1970 (74)
1971 (22)
1972 (2)
1974 (1)
The condition of the cars range from complete basket cases to Concours correct restorations.
The majority of the cars are in what I would call a decent-to-nice driver condition. Some will be wearing original faded stripes while others will be repaints but not what I would call a restored car.
If you are asking how many Concours correct restored cars are coming, the number would probably be in the 12-15 car range. I didn't list them that way but can count at least that many off the top of my head.

Jacquie,
How's this, the new target will be when we run out of parking lot.
All joking aside, I would bet some will not make it due to logistical and other reasons. But then again I know there are still something like 15-20 cars/owners on the fence, so if they come the number could go higher. We will see.
I'm just hoping everyone comes out and has a good time.
Duane
PS. I don't remember if I mentioned this before but a few of the Buick Engineers that either helped develop the parts for the cars, or were involved in the GSX project itself, have offered to have a talk during the Reunion. We are working on the schedule now to figure out the best "time slot" for the talk.
That will be something people will not want to miss.
