View Full Version : Disc brakes, 64 Skylark, what rims?

I have a 64 Skylark Conv that I have just installed disc brakes on. The disc spindles are off a 72 tempest/GTO and fit fine. The OEM rims will not fit. I have measured the back spacing of the OEM rims at 4". I am thinking about Crager SS rims.

Has anyone else done this setup? I am wondering what back space to by in the new Cragers. 15" x 6" should work. Also, will the same Crager rims that fit the front also go on the rear?

Any info is appreciated.

any 15" wheel should fit, it's only the 14's that sometimes have problems.

Adam,

Do you mean I don't have to worry about back space if I use 15" wheels?

Thanks,
Karl

I have a 64 skylark convertible that I put 15 Buick rims on with 255/60/15 tire on the rear and they fit. I am going to put 235/60/15 in front but I have drum brakes. I will also switch to disc next year.

from a wheelwell clearance standpoint, yes you do. From a disc brake clearance standpoint, no you don't. I assumed that you meant that the brake calipers were hitting your 14" wheels?

I have zero offset 15x7 front wheels and 15x8 with a 5.5 inch backspace rear. You will need less backspace than me depending on the rear end you have and the brake drums (I have aluminum drums on my car).

I am not sure if the later spindles add any width to the track, but would guess not?

sorry for the confusion.

Adam,

Thanks for clearing that up. Yes I did mean the front wheels and the disc brakes.

Ed,

Thanks for that info. I talked to the tire shop today and they said that sounded good to them.

I ordered Cragar Super Sport mags in 15" x 7" all around and Goodyear GT 225/60 for the front and 255/60 for the front. They had the tires, but I am waiting on the Cragars.

Thanks for all the help.
