Sorry ive read through similar posts and im getting a little lost. I suck at the electrical side of things.

Car is not charging properly. Recently replaced the regulator.

I have a 1967 buick lesabre with a stock alternator.

I have accessories im sure are putting more strain on the alt than it can produce.

How do i convert, (step by step if possible) to an internally regulated alternator? What alternator should i buy for this conversion?

Will a new alternator fit my stock brackets?

Please help thanks!

here it is, step by step from mike at buick performance.
I am so greatful for George and the crew at B.P. for all their tech write ups. I hope this helps you like it did for me.

Is an internally regulated alternator the only solution? I was thinking of getting more amps and staying with my current externally regulated alternator. Or does that make it a generator? I always get that confused...

Whenever I have heard people say this, it seldom turns out to be true. What accessories do you have that you think are putting so much strain on the alternator?

i just used a jumper from the f to 4 wires in the regulator plug. tucked it under the external regulator for a more stock look. changed the plug on the alternator harness. works fine.

as far as heavy load. in my boys car with a large amplifier. i increased the wire size to the alternator from the starter+ terminal and added a large ground directly to the battery from the alternator.stock size wiring can be a bottle neck.this still wasn't enough so we added another battery in the trunk where the amp is. he wanted to use a capasitor(sp) at almost $200 but we had a battery so used it .not as high tech but it worked. with the large draw at low rpm the battery would go dead.i doubt if any alternator would put out enough amperes at low rpm to run that amplifer. so more storage was the answer.

i was able to conert it but it still runs pretty hot. Hot enough to start metling the heater hose. not cool
