I did a see-thru Wankle engine many years ago.
About that engine,
I'd buy one, and another for a youth, wanting to get into the auto hobby.
I wish there were Buick engines like that..
Have you seen what the modern "ant farm" looks like? LOL

WOW! Seems to be a little flashy for an ant farm... And i really wanted to try and find a motor that would actually run but i guess the closest thing to that would be like a little gas engine for a model car or plane.
Does anyone know if you can buy real running engines that come completely apart that you can assemble yourself?
-jason
70sLark
01-13-2009, 02:10 AM
Would be neat if they could run. Dunno why they don't have any small scale running V8s.
You could start with a new $150 small 3.5 briggs.
It does help to take them apart yourself then reassemble and make it run.
Then get a OHV Vtwin riding mower and you got valve adjusting and electrical systems in a small package.
Then ya buy project Buick ;)
70sLark
01-13-2009, 02:18 AM
To really spice it up once the 3.5 is mastered you go up to simple metal fab and bending by building a mini bike.
After the mower is done you build a go-kart with it, which is moderate bending and fab with the steering geometry.
A whole car to disassemble then put back is its own reward.
I built one of those as a kid, but it was battery powered, and the spark plugs would light up in the correct firing order.
I don't understand why they changed it to a hand crank?
That's kind of lame. :puzzled:

It is funny as I built one out of the same mower.
Though I have yet to really ride it.
Tried getting it going again this year but a broken flywheel key and random lose of spark ruined it.
I have a newer full sized cub Im going to take a shot at.

I didnt get a chance to check out that link yet, but i will for sure! yeah, our car is now in the back yard being overgrown. It has been a while since we've had it running and last time we went to start it, it needed a new float because the old float bowl got water in it and froze and crushed the float. Then the tranny siezed up. It was a 3 spd manual.
Notice our throttle... Its just a piece of wire attached to the throttle on the carb.
It has no breaks either... Its a very dangerous cart. It has been up to, i believe, 47 mph. It is NOT stable at those speeds. haha.

This was just a stock 5hp but on my first attempt the seat fell off and nearly ripped my arm off as I didn't want it ghosting riding at 30MPH.
His vid post mention of a sprocket change is probably the ticket as I went nuts and flipped the ratio to 1:3 every 1 turn of the crank, the trans turns 3 times. On the 2nd attempt I broke the stock 8 tooth sprocket in half.
If I had gotten it running I had planned to afix a gokart clutch with a bigger sprocket with a band brake for brakes. Then just put some straight bars with motobike like controls for gas n brake.

Just a quick history lesson on the old Visible V-8-
The kit was originally made by a company called Renwal out of Mineola NY. It came out in the early 60's. Renwal also made a Visible Chassis that accepted the V-8. The Visible Chassis kit has working brakes that use water instead of brake fluid. The manual transmission and rear differential were clear as well and functioned just like the real thing. Even the steering box was visible. The chassis when built was over 3 feet long. Renwal sold their visible kits to Revell when they closed. Revell has re released all the visible kits except for the chassis.
I have a complete mint unbuilt Renwal chassis kit and the original Renwal V-8 kit if anyone is interested.

Here is the original issue V-8 kit and the chassis kit. Check out dad with the pipe! I love the artwork on the older kits. I wonder how much second hand smoke junior inhaled? The chassis kits are very hard to find in unbuilt condition. Most of the time you find them either built or partially built. If anyone is seriously interested, I'll take $1000 for the pair. Ive had the chassis kit for a long time. Its one of the best ones Ive ever seen. Its complete and inventoried. Comes with all the original paperwork. I consider this kit the Holy Grail of model kits. I almost hate to let it go because I'll probalby never have another.

Another visible kit you guys should check out is the "Visible Mustang". It was a visible P-51 fighter plane. It had working motorized landing gear and propeller. I have an original and two of the 50th anniversary kits. I put one together with my dad when I wa a kid.
The P-51 kit is readily available on Ebay. They always have several up at any given time.

i thought my brother used a pulley on something... Maybe it was from the motor to trans. I think the motor has a belt connecting to the trans and the trans only has a chain from the output shaft to the rear axle. My brother stole the pulley off of my dads old table saw since it was extremely small and used that in place of the original. It made it fly! :3gears: although it ate through the belts really fast.

but as for the visible v8...
I've been thinking. I have been pondering getting one of those small electric motors and hooking it up to the output shaft of the tranny where the hand crank is. Do you guys think it would turn that motor too fast though and hurt it? I dont want to get it together and end up having it break! haha.
But i just feel like it would be really cool to have it run "on its own". They had the 4 cyl version which comes standard running on batteries and it also lights up in the correct firing order, but i REALLY wanted the v8. And it is nice to see that the v8 is still carboureted rather than fuel injected!

The original ones that were battery powered ran by a motor in the starter housing that turned the flywheel, iirc
Regarding the Brigg-Stratton 3hp approach, that's what I did with Dad's lawnmower. Unfortunately, I neglected to get prior approval for that particluar project - and even though it ran just fine once I got it back together, I still got in trouble. Dads can be just SO picky...

HAHAHA!!! That is so hilarious! My dad is the exact same way! hahaha. Both my brothers and i are really into cars and stuff and my dad doesnt know the first thing about them. It's funny how that works out...
And i figured i wouldnt be able to make it work like the original thats why i figured id get one of those small electric motors. The only thing is that i feel like it might break if i try and run it that fast being as the parts are plastic. well im assuming they are all plastic anyway.

If you recall, Hot Rod magazine (or maybe it was Car Craft) did an April fools article several years ago about a new top secret plastic V8 engine which turned out to be the visible V8. They made it look like it actually ran for awhile, at least in the photo's, but it ended when the combustion heat took over and burned it to the ground.
One of those "so stupid it's kinda funny" stories.

Scott (LDPOSSE on v8buick), my brother, said that is how he broke his original 8 tooth sprocket too, but his ratio was closer to 1:2.

I have an adjustable DC power supply. It goes from 0-30 volts DC. It would be interesting to do a few "pulls" with the visible V-8. Keep increasing the rpm/ volts on each successive pull.
Maybe even do a high RPM durability test. Run it at high RPM till it fails! Then do a teardown to see what broke.
Do you guys think it would make it to 30 volts?

The model didnt come with any sort of lubricant.
I thought of vaseline since i saw it posted earlier, but the only thing i was wondering is how does it work with the plastic parts? Since vaseline is petroleum based does it react weird to the plastic pieces?
I ask this because when i was into rubik's cubes, i know you werent supposed to lube them with vaseline because it would break down the insides of the cube. How well did it work for you?
Thanks,

That makes sense, as any petroleum-based product or solvent (including petroleum jelly and WD-40) may have an adverse effect on the plastic.
Where in the world did this WD-40 = "fish oil" idea come from? Its MSDS says it's made up of aliphatic hydrocarbons, petroleum base oil and CO2 as a propellant. The only thing it has in common with sea life is the offshore oil rig sitting in the middle of it.
