Daughter's husband diagnosed with leukemia

They just got married last April......

He went to hospital on Saturday due to pain in side from coughing. Turned out to be a torn ligament in stomach with internal bleeding. No clotting going on. White cells 100,000. Blood is being filtered. Biopsy of bone marrow tomorrow. Doesn't look good.......

His best friend from the same island in Michigan died of leukemia just before the wedding last year. They think it is related to environmental exposure due to the high pollution in the area. There are an abnormaly high number of cases from that area........

Bruce I am sorry to hear of his circumstance however my son was diagnosed with T-cell Leukemia years ago and fought VERY hard and today he is in remission and was able to have a child.That was over a decade ago and since then I have heard doctors have learned so much more of the disease and its treatment.Keep him fighting (treatment is hard on a person) He will be in my prayers Mike L.

A book I have at home is from 1995 and they said he would have approx 4 yrs. But the doctors are saying possibly (if chronic not acute) 10-15 yrs due to advances in treatment.

White cell count spiked up to 500,000 yesterday. They are trying to get it to 375,000 today.....

I guess the longer one lives the more medicine advances....a bonus for those of us here/now........

White cells down to 215,000 and he finally ate half of a grilled cheese. Hadn't eaten since Saturday. they have transferred him to oncology and are trying to determine what stage it is. Earlier they were confident it was early stage CML but the bruising he was having indicates intermediate stage. Bleeding internally has stopped but the stomach pain is apparently quite bad. They are going to try to let the blood absord rather than do surgery.

bruce, back in the mid 80's a partner of mine at the cpd kept getting nose bleeds. finally went to the doc. first bout of chemo did nothing, and then a
second dose, nothing. he was dying, so the doc told his wife he was going to
triple the dose and asked permission. that chemo almost killed him, i remember leaving his room thinking he would not make it over the night. anyway jeff is still alive today. every now and then he has to give himself a shot of chemo. he is in his 60's.
they have come a long way since the mid 80's so keep your family's spirits up. best of luck jim
