Don't know where else to post this,

Finally got around to taking a close look at the top of gas tank build sheet I discovered in the fall while taking the GS apart for a little work. I saw the 4G67 and never looked at the VIN. Turns out it's for another 350 GS Convertible made a few cars before mine. Big disappoointment :( . Anyway, if someone has the car this build sheet is for, I would like you to have it, just as I would like to get mine. If your car is VIN 4G67K2H117097 I'll give it back to you. My email is r72gs@aol.com or PM me. Please, only if you actually own the car.

may have been a junk yard gas tank. rusty tanks are a big problem for cars who have set for a while at some time.

I hear ya, but what are the odds of pulling off a tank from junk yard from 1972 car which is a couple serial numbers off in VIN?

Factory workers probably just grabbed a sheet and stuck it on the tank. Not the first time I've heard this happen.

I don't think it's a junkyard tank, I've had the car since '83 and it didn't look replaced then. The sheet was just laying on top. If the tank was replaced, they sure would not have left the sheet there. I figured it was a long shot but someone may still have the car it goes with.

Karl,

I have same dilema with my 72 Stage 1. I removed the gas tank a couple of years ago to replace the rubber gas lines and found a build sheet for the Skylark that was assembled in front of my car. The VIN number was off one number. Since I've owned the car since 1982, I also doubt that the tank had been previously replaced. More likely, a quality issue with an assembly line worker.

Owner Found!

This may be a good idea for a new forum, it seems there are a fair amount of mixed up build sheets around. In this case my car was quite a few more, after the car build sheet I had.

For years I have been decoding build sheets from on top of the gastanks and have come across this problem many times. Thats why I require the owner supply me with the full vin and the information from the firewall tag.
Once when I first started, I decoded a build sheet that the owner said was a GS but was for a Skylark. I called up the owner and asked for his vin# and found the sheet was for a different car.
While decoding the 1970 sheets I noticed that many of the incorrect ones seemed to center around the Christmas season of 69. I also noticed some smaller batches around other Holidays. I found this also was true to a much smaller degree for the 71 and 72 cars, but I haven't decoded as many of these.
Still it makes you wonder if people may have had other things on their mind, remember we're all human.
Also while working on one of my friends cars , a 1970 White GS 350, we pulled the Body Shop Inspection sheet out from inside the dash. Rolled up inside it was another sheet from a 1970 White GSX that was two cars back.
Go figure.

Now that I found the owner of the car I had the build sheet for, any chance anyone has mine? Ser 117107.

Thanks!

Duane/Guy’s… Let me get this straight...I recently removed the tank from my 70 Stage1 built 12D, 69 Flint holiday car<grin>, Part of the tank sticker was there, but the top LH part is gone...now for the question, ...Is there or might there be other documentation sheets in the car somewhere? Been following this thread and am not sure if I understand it correctly. Some cars have both tank stickers and build sheets? Or are these the same things? Am I done looking, now that I found the tank sticker? Thanks guys

Thats what happend to my ragtop as well....I thought I had found the gas tank sheet but once I had it out none of the options looked right and then I noticed the VIN, it was for a hardtop skylark!!!!!!LOL off by one number.....what a bummer....only chance I ever had for original paperwork on this car....

Seems to happen a lot from what I have heard...nobody has ever been able to explain to me why they didn't just toss them away when they were done with them. I don't think they were ever really intended to be seen again so I don't know if anyone really cared where they put them....

The odds are unreal, the guy who owns the car is having it restored now. It was in great shape so I know he's happy.

Now what are the odds of finding mine?? or Tim's?? With only around 800 GS convertibles made, thats not even 3 a day, mine was 10 after the other one.

I have a 72 parts car, what are the odds my build sheet is in that one?? I have to get over there and check the VIN if it's close, I'm pulling the tank. It's so rusty so I maybe able to get it thru the trunk LOL.

This one is a sheet and not a sticker, but I do think we are talking about the same thing. The GM production order sheet with the paint, body and option codes.

Mr. Big,
In 1970, cars produced in Flint could have three different build sheets, the POBF (Production Order Body Final) sheet (Found on top of the Gas Tank), the Large BSIS (Body Shop Inspection) sheet (Found inside the driver-side windshield pillar post), or a small sheet 3-1/2"x5" (Found under the drivers seat bottom, directly on top of the springs.) Each sheet has different information and helps to complete a car's history. Some cars came with all three, some with nothing.
In 1970, cars produced in other plants came with a different style build sheet. This sheet is a "Chevy Style" build sheet (Sometimes called the Broadcast Sheet). These are usually found attached to the backside of the rear seat top. Again they have different information then the other sheets.
I personally have found build sheets under the carpet, on the gastank, up inside the dash, in the driverside pillar post, on the backside of doorpanels, inside front bucket seat backs, under front seats, and even inside the headliner. If I were you I would look everywhere I could, you never know.
I think this is starting to look like a topic for the newsletter.

Thanks Duane, this a great topic, I've already checked the drivers A pillar pad, the back seat top and bottom, so I'll keep a look out as I go through the process of cleaning up the inside. Found the tank sheet while I was loading my car for transport from the previous owners home, you could see the damn thing peaking out from the top, couldn’t wait to get home (800 mi ride) to see, at least I got half of it, LOL. I have plenty of documentation for the car, I just don't want to miss anything that could help me to learn more about my car. Thanks again and I'll keep looking..:beer

Would the locations be about the same to find them on a 66 Skylark??? Mine should still be there somewhere...

Mr Big,
Send me (2 Copies) of your sheet along with the info from the ID plate on the firewall and your full vin. I,ll decode it for free. (Haven't done a Stage 1 one for a while.) If they are hard to read leave one copy untouched, and write what you think the codes are on the other copy. Half the information is better then nothing. Don't forget to give me your "Real Name" address, and phone # with the info. Here is mine.

Jim R,
I had a 66 GS coupe years ago and found the build sheet Inside the drivers front seat top. I took the seat back off and there it was. This is the only 66 I have been involved with , I hope it helps. The 66 Sheet is small (4"x8 1/2") and looks like a computer printout. I don't know how to decode these but, I am willing to Learn.

Hey Duane, where did you find
the build sheet for the X-Camino?? lol. Sam

Duane

Sam,
I found a piece of it in this car, and this car, and this car----.
That was a good one, but I have one for you. I sent in an article to the Bugle a while ago and the X-Camino made the Cover for the April 2002 issue. Boy was I HAPPY! They really did a nice job, with the pictures and text. They didn't change one word of text, I was surprised because I am not much of a writer.
I,ll tell you what the best thing about building this car was. My Dad would come over during the daytime when I was at work and look at it, I knew he was there because things would be moved a little. He even brought friends over to see it. (Years ago he had an old Model A with a rumble seat and wanted to fix it up, but had to sell it to put in a driveway for our house.) The day we finished the X-Camino and were ready to put it on the trailer to go to the Nationals My Dad came over. He was so proud of the fact that a bunch of guys got together and made a car from a bunch of scrap. We got to do something that he wasn't able to do, and when he saw the Picture of the car in Car Craft he was proud all over again. Thats what the car means to me.

? How's it registered? Sam

Duane

Sam,
In Pennsylvania I had to title it as a reconstructed vehicle. It's registered as a 1970 Buick GS Truck. Thats why I had truck plates on it first. Later I changed to the Vanity Plates.

I have to add my 2 cents worth to this. I retrieved both sheets from my 70 Skylark Convertible. One was behind the rear seat, the other on top of the gas tank. Which one is the build sheet?
The one on top of my gas tank is incorrect, but the other one seems to be the right one....

Russ,
If you are refering to (Production Order Body Final Build Sheets) in your post you stated that the vin # for your car is 444670H303414. The correct sheet would be the one that has that vin # on it. If that part of the sheet is missing then check the firewall ID plate and see if your Body # is on one of the sheets.
If you have another type of build sheet you might want to call me so we can figure it out. Thanks Duane

PS. I would be interested in looking at the incorrect build sheet, might get some new information from it.

Duane,
Sorry you haven’t heard from me lately, seems every evening I come in with good intentions of calling, but the wife and kids have kept me busy with the crud. Hopefully you have received my package in tact. You now have the original/or copy of all documentation that I have for my Stage 1. Bet that gas tank sheet looks worse than you expected? That picture of the car was taken, June 1972, note the original Uniroyal “Tiger Paws”, thought you might find it interesting. I will get around to the phone soon and we will talk, just wanted to try and touch base. I will be at the NAT'S for the entire week and can pick up my originals then. Thanks,

Duane,
Got my package this weekend. The decoded protect-o-plate and tank sticker info for my 70 Stage 1, was easy to read and very informative. Anyone who is interested in learning more about his or her Buick should have Daune perform this service for them. He can turn all of those confusing alphanumeric codes into “plain” English VERY VERY COOL! My tank sticker was only half there and covered with under coating, but he was still able to use it and decoded what was there. BTW, sent you that old GM Code Book we talked about, you should have it soon, MUCH THANKS

Mr Big,
I got the code book and started looking at it. There is a lot of information there that is the same for our year cars. It should be a large help to me. Thanks Again.
Duane
P.S. Thanks for the (72 vintage) picture of your car, It really looks cool with the original Uniroyal Tiger Paws on it.
