I am also a model railroader. I would be interested in a Norfolk and Western 611 if you have one.

Trains are too slow for me. I have probably 400 too 500 ho scale cars, and 150 1/24 scale, and a few miles of track, all the different type and brand track.
I have a buddy who turned his whole basement into a train set up. Different levels and sky painted walls. Sweet set up.

I'll put a list together this week guys. Had a Lionel scale 611 w/pass cars. That went last summer to a friend, sorry. All the trains are newer scale 3 rail Atlas, Lionel and 3rd Rail. Hope to keep some of the scale brass steam engines.

Cool. I was going to say that I'm not into trains, but I would love if some of you posted pic's of some of the setups that you've got. I've seen some that are very cool.

Do post a list of your "O" offerings. I am a railfan, also, and would be interested in knowing what you have.
Cheers!

I am a model railroader but nothing set up as I am renting. but soon as I get my own the plans are already set. Doing the defunct Colorado & Southern from Laramie to Walden CO as it would be operating today.
As with Buicks I think railroading is in my blood, my father was an engineer and my grandfather was an executive for EMD.

I have a Garden Railroad in my back yard. You can see it in the June 2010 issue of Garden Railways magazine.

I'm not overly fascinated with trains, but I've always enjoyed & appreciated model railroads for the attention to detail that owners/enthusiasts are so talented/skilled with!
I have O, HO, and N scales.
The N scale is my favorite, as I'm making it an All GM & automotive related town:
- Auto dealership/showroom/lot (all GSX & GN's)
- Drive In's: bank/restaurant/(DVD screen) theater/etc.
- Oil & Fuel tanks/rigs/pipelines/etc.
- Service station/Auto Body shop
...
My neighbor let his ($15,000-$20,000) Lionel O gauge layout & ALL related equipment go, for only $2,500, because no one was interested to buy his house with the train set taking up the whole basement, so he got desperate, and took whatever he could get for it, to sell the house faster!
I found out about it AFTER he already sold it...:Do No:

I grew up with my father having trains in a room off the back of the garage. Then we added to the house and well thats where the trains moved to. They are all HO. as a kid i loved them. Then my grate-grandfather passed and i did get to inherit most of his N scale. I started a 4'x6' layout, but it took up to much space in my own home. I still have the trains and all the buildings. The layout got donated to the local railroad historical soceity. One day i will have a bigger home and i will start to build.

Does it count if I am an arm-chair model railroader? I have intended to build a layout for 10+ years, but haven't gotten started. Seems like every two years or so I become interested in another railroad or location to model, and my indicision keeps me from building.
I am into HO, and have collected brass steam since 1975. Have amassed a modest (by some standards) collection of 83 steam locomotives, plus many cabooses, passenger and freight cars all in brass. The bulk of my collection is C&O, but also have NYC, PRR, CRI&P, D&RGW, Erie, and SP examples.
I have many less expensive plastic rail cars and locomotives as well, but for now they are all stored in boxes. Hope to some day get off my narrow a$$ and start a layout. We'll see I guess.

Trix is an arm of the German company Marklin, and are typically very high quality products. I don't think you will be disappointed with a Trix Big Boy.
US firms Athearn, and Precision Craft Models/Broadway Limited have also produced them. They can be found on eBay frequently.

Cheers!

Wow Athearn going back to producing steam. I must be out of touch. When I moved from Rapid City, SD I managed the Model Railroad section of a hobby shop.
I just wish Athearn would go back to the Kit rolling stock, Vs the RTR.

I've had my post-war Lionel "O" gauge set since about 1967. My dad bought it "used" for me for Christmas. It's all stuff from the 50's to early 60's.
It comes out every Christmas now. The kids and people that come over love it.
What do you have for sale? I might be interested in purchasing it as a whole. PM me.

I've been tinkering around with model railroad for years. Unfortunately we're moving, so I've had to tear down my last layout. It was Canadian National circa 1960, and for the next layout I'm going to rebuild it and with the larger room I'll be adding a European set-up, Deutsche Reichsbahn circa 1948-68 to go in next to it. The contrast between the two styles should be interesting; - it's just that I'll probably have to re-engine all of the German steam engines I have since they were made in East Germany and aren't very good runners. Anyone have any experience with "can" motors?

Anyone have any experience with "can" motors?
I have repowered/regeared a number of older brass steam locomotives. These have been exclusively in HO scale, many were done with Sagami "can" motors, which are no longer available. This is a shame, as they made a fine quality 16,500 rpm motor which worked very well with the high quality 40:1 gearboxes factory installed in older Japanese brass.
Since the demise of Sagami, I have adopted a flat sided five pole cylindrical motor from Canon. This motor's 12 volt top speed of 8,200 rpm requires me to change gear boxes, and I managed to acquire a few Samhongsa (now out of business) 27:1 gear boxes. (see pic). This is the same mechanism used in many of the modern brass imports, and makes for a very smooth running model.
I have also used some of the fine gear boxes made by Northwest Short Line, but these need to be assembled and are very sensative to slight mis-alignments. If they are assembled correctly they work flawlessly. If assembled incorrectly, they will wear out quickly, and sound like a coffee grinder while they do it.
It is getting harder to find modern cylindrical motors that spin enough rpm, and produce enough torque to be suitable for model train applications. As I recall, there is a dealer in Texas who has a large stock of motors from Canon, Faulhaber, Maxon, etc. He has listings on eBay under the name microlocmotion, but his listings are VERY confusing. Seldom does he list the rated rpm for his motors. This is probably because all modern coreless motors are built for various voltages and the operating rpm of a 6 volt motor can be close to that of a 24 volt motor. And they look identical. If you deal with him, make certain that you are buying motors designed to operate at 12 to 18 volts to ensure compatibility with current DC and DCC power supplies. Many of these modern motors also have very small diameter output shafts. Beware of these, as there may not be drive line couplings available to fit them.
I wish it weren't so complicated these days.
