I started noticing a vibration in my 70 GS at speeds above 60 MPH, the whole steering column vibrates which leads me to believe that something in the front end is causing this. I have taken many steps to try to solve this problem such as, having all 4 tires balanced and rotated, made sure that the nuts on the ball joints, tie rods and all others nuts are tight, the front suspension feels tight when I pull on the wheels while the car is supported by jack stands, the shocks are also fairly new, all 4. what else should I check or what do you guys think could be the cause of this? Thanks.

Boy it sounds like you've covered all the bases for the main things to check. I assume that you've taken everything from the steering box to the wheels and looked for slop in every joint and connection?

Did you remove the driveshaft????

Sounds like bad u-joints and possibly an out-of-balance driveshaft.

Looks like me and George is on a roll this morning,,, yep, ck the drive shaft , like he says, and also the harmonic balancer and water pump assembly, especially the fan clutch if it has one....they will come off and go thru the rad....

i have been doing vibration problems for a few years they make a balance that does road force variations .... this balance has a arm that comes down and puts 800 lbs of force to make sure the tires ar round and donot have flat or weak spots in the sidewalls/tread ect it will also check rim runout tire runout and put up marks to get the truest possilble
match between tire and rim .... it will also tell you if the tire is to far out of spec. i have had michelin tires bad alot of goodyear esp if the car sits and not kept off the ground

even though the tire balances well doesnt mean it is round and wont vibrate at certain speeds this is the only way i have new tires balnced
aNd the ONLY way to make sure the tires are not the problem

the hunter road force balncer is th one to use it does the best job and doesnt lie most new car delaers have them and real good tire shops will have this balance

I also noticed that when I put the car in gear, I get a clunk which sounds like its coming from the driveshaft or rear end.

Check the universals on the drive shaft. Vibration at speeds and clunk, sounds like area to look.

On my 70 skylark there is no clunk when I shift into gear, so something must be loose on my GS. Am I correct in saying that there shouldnt b any play in the universals?

I agree with George and Matt - the clunk is probably u-joints. The "play" is what gives the clunk.
