Hello everyone,
I'm going to be rebuilding my 350 and I need some suggestions from people that are experienced with high performance Buick engine's. I want to build an engine that is streetable with reliability and high horsepower. The engine is a running '70 350 thats in my '70 Lesabre convertible with alittle over 100,000 miles. I want to rebuild it because it is tired and the valve guides or seals are going out, eating up my oil. So, I figure if I'm going to redo it I'm going to have some fun!
Okay, so far I got the cylinder heads. The head's are done with:
-T.A. oversized stainless valves
-Bronze guides
-T.A. double springs
-Teflon seals
-Surface milled .050
-Ported intake and exhaust (246 cfm intake @ .500 lift and 166 cfm @ .500 lift)
I'm going to get a ported T.A. intake to match up with the heads, upgrade the ignition, the carbureator, and install headers. I was told that running a stock '70 engine with these heads would put me on the border line of running pump gas. The things I need to know is:
-Which cam would be the best to run?
-Should I run roller rocker's and lifters with these heads?
-Would it be best to run a T.A high volume or stock oil pump? I ask because, I hear alot of people complain about there h.v. oil pump and oil flow on their 455's and I'm wondering if the 350's have the same problem?
-Do they make a large capacity oil pan for the 350 that would replace a stock 4-quart pan and would I need it?
-Would I have to beef up the bottom end with stronger connecting rods, etc. to keep the reliability factor high? Or, would keeping it stock be okay?
-What kind of piston would be the best to use?
-Do they make a stock 1970 oversize piston? I ask because, I would like to keep the compression up if I get the block bored out.
-What would be the best exhaust header to run, large or small diameter tube's? I think T.A. is my only choice as far as the brand goes.
-What size exhaust would be the best for this engine combination? I'm currently running duel 2 1/4" exhaust with Flowmaster 3-chamber 50 series delta-flow's.
-What size carbureator would I need?
As far as the drivetrain is concerned, I plan on running a 3.42 ratio in the rear and a higher than stock stall speed convertor for my turbo 350 that is in the car. I know I'm asking alot but, my familiarity with modifying a Buick 350 is low. And, I didn't hear that many people do it until I joined here. I appreciate your time and advice.
Thanks,
Rob Margel
