If you are on a budget, a pair of 625 cfm carbs from a 65 Buick are plentiful. Carb number is 3921.
A top-of-the-line choice would be a pair of new Edelbrock AVS's with the endurashine finish at around $400 each.
For sizes, a pair of 500's is fine for a cruiser, 600-650's for better performance, or a pair of 750's for all-out running.

Ya I was thinking about going with either the EB Thunder Series AVS 650 cfm part #18054 or the Holley Ultra Street Avenger 670 cfm part #0-86670RD. I was originally gonna use 500's but I spoke with Russell Martin and he said they would be too small. I know nothing about these carbs what would u guys use?

I was talking to this guy yesterday and he said that in the 60's they used 400's on dual applications and that they out performed the stock dual 625 configuration. Is this true?

I put the 2x4 on my blue 66 back in 1981. I went with a pair of Carter AFB Competition series 500cfm carbs. They work very well, giving nice throttle response with no bogging.
Then I tried a single 750 cfm Q-jet.....it gave a very noticeable improvement in top-end power. In the 1/4 mile, the single Q-jet lowered my et's from 13.60's to 13.40's!
The moral of this story?....I'm still trying to figure that out! But the 500's are obviously not the optimum setup for drag use. I have some eBay 750's here I'm going to give a try one of these days.
The general consensus on the internet is to use at least a pair of 600 cfm's.
Anybody out there running two 750's to give us a drive report?

I finally settled on the Edelbrock Thunder Series for the carbs for my '61 401 nailhead
