Rare Find!!

I followed up on a lead on a 69 GS California in Tenn. but when I was talking to Randy about his car he mentioned his "friend" also had some "cars" well this is the real reason I went down there was to get a look at these other cars. Long story short...the guy did have a car or two he wanted to sell one was a restored 69 GS 400 Conv....nice car but not #'s matching and painted the wrong color, he wanted 10,500.00 too much for me. BUt in the barn he had the other car and it turned out to be a all original matching numbers 69 GS 350 4spd with a mint black bucket set interior with console and working tach! Great body and professionaly rebuilt motor! SO I bought it !! But I have one question...there is this strange looking silver canister behind the drivers side headlights mounted on the core support under the horns and it has these strange fittings,any ideas would be great!!:Do No: Thanks:TU:

Good guess but everyone I have seen has been mounted on the drivers inner fender, this thing looks like it came from a Star Trek episode!! Beam Me Up Scotty!!! :Do No: I will post a pic as soon as possible.

A wild shot in the dark, it could be a Cal car and I think you are looking at a very early Charcoal canister? part of a smog system.

It probably has like three fittings ontop for hookup to the carb and intake, sound right??.

A horizontal canister about 5" diameter x 18" long could also be automatic level control, if it has small clear plastic air lines running to it, along with power leads to supply the motor / compressor. There would also be a white-and-black level switch mounted on the firewall, with wiring running back to the motor / compressor cylinder.

Thanks bud, that sounds very close...I guess this is partly my fault as the car was in the barn which was dark and I had to use a flashlight to read the numbers and didn't pay much attention to the canister...it was all aluminium though. :Do No:

It was certainly stock on the big cars. As far as Skylarks/ GSs go, I'm not sure -- I'm on the road and don't have any books with me. But I do think it was an option.

The system keeps the car level when there is a big load in the trunk, or when you are towing. The switch on the firewall is a fore-and-aft mercury level switch that cuts the compressor on and off. The compressor feeds air to the rear shocks via the small air lines, to raise or lower the rear end as needed.

No, no the movement is not carried away like a low rider, but it works on the same principle.

Now that i think about it I did see under the rear end some strange looking coil over shocks and thought they look rather weird!! :eek2: Your discreption sounds very close to the canister as it had what looked liked air fittings on the top? But I did not get a chance to look at the firewall for the switch you describe.
