Had 71 GS that was featured in Car Craft and sold to another board member and am now in the middle of my twin turbo build. 455 with Stage 2 TE ported by Gessler, TA intake, 2 66mm turbos, Rossler Terminator 4 tranny, Moser 9" rear end, etc. Here are some pics.

David,
Looking good! Do you plan to intercool that beast?
Jim
gs455david

yep. One intercooler for each turbo. Should all be done over the next two weeks. Waiting for the brakes from Wilwood as well.

Do you plan on running power steering? I wish someone would come up with a tt solution for cars that use A/C and power steering. Has anyone ever though to mount the turbos right where the stock manifolds exit like the APS kits?

David, Can you post some specs for your engine build? I'm currently collecting parts to build an injected tt 455 for my next project. Looks great BTW.

two 3 inch downpipes. Build will be 455 .10 over most likely or stock bore if possible, studded with JE pistons, 8 3/4 to 1. Cam to be suggested by Nelson Racing Engines most likely or Duttweiler. Stage 2 TE max effort port work on that and sp2 by Gessler, T & D rockers. CSU carb, Rossler Terminator 4 Turbo 400 with brake. Moser 9 inch rear end. Inland Empire Driveshaft. MSD 7531, Wilwood brakes all around. Electrical evac system for valvecovers. 2 Bell intercoolers. 2 Garrett 66.5mm turbos with 81 exducer. Tial 38 mm wastegates and Tial 60 mm blow off valve, etc.

Very cool stuff.
Is it a street/strip or pure race car?
If youre talking to nelson racing, i bet he'll have more to say about your fuel delivery than your cam :).
Ill be watching this one.

Did you build the headers? Looks good. We would like some information on the header build if you wouldn't mind. Looking at doing some turbo stuff on Tyler's race car.
looks good, its what im gonna do when i get my block. what fuel pump you going to run. i went with a magnafuel 500 for mine some of the belt driven pumps looked good now though.
gs455david

I have the Magna Fuel 500 pump with -12 line going to Magna Fuel regulator that is boost referencing. 20 gallon fuel cell. Street/strip car. Going to run on Billet Specialties wheels powder coated black, car green, ET Street Radial tire. Fab shop is making the headers/log manifolds.

I built my own bracket that uses a Sweet remote reservoir pump. If you are not running a mechanical fuel pump (not advised with boost) you can mount them low and tight to the block. If you want air you are probably better off with single turbo. Then can run stock AC location.

Good looking rear suspension setup. No poly bushings. yea

Nice setup! Are you just dumping the wastegate outlets or are they going to snake back around to the exhaust? Your driver's side manifold looks very similar to what I ended up with because of the steering shaft.
Cool stuff! BIG power potential there!

my goal is to drive in on an ET Street Radial, drop the air pressure, run an 8 in the quarter and drive back home. I know the block will probably split in two, but there are too many parts still needed for the TA block and I want to see if that thing lives before I plunk down 6k.

Maybe you should at least put a diaper on it...if it splits in half at the track, the oil will ruin the day for every racer in that lane afterwards.
Awesome project and looking forward to updates.

Real nice setup your building there and I can understand the cost issue we wound up spending almost 45k on just the engine for our custom car. Its a Twin turbo T66s, they make some big steam!! Made 700hp with only like 9psi boost level and non intercooled. WIth a SBC

Did you see the setup that was for sale on here? A GREAT deal if Chris still has it. It was Kerry's, who passed-away; Kerry had plans for a similar engine combo to yours. I can't remember if it was for TE or SE heads.

Great build! I wish I had those heads, they leave WAY more room for the plumbing than the regular style heads. Well, that and they certainly flow better. No love for the 350's though. :)

I am more than satisfied at this point. manifolds going to machine shop to clean up flange and then the piping for the twin intercoolers will begin. Parachute probably going on this weekend as well. Wilwoods for the front coming next week and those are going on as well. Car should be done in 2 to 3 weeks and engine going to builder. Tranny be here next week as well. Car should be at track this year. Hoping for 5s in the 1/8 on radials.
dont paint it David itd be sweet without being painted.
Justa350
05-14-2010, 05:38 PM
Yeah, with the suspension it has, it should hook really hard on a narrow radial. Should be able to squirt off some sub-1.4 60' times. What size are your primary logs? Also, never heard on the wastagate outlet plans. Dumping the WG's or piping back to the DP's? Looks tough on the driver's side to tie back into the DP.
Kick ass project! Just a tip on the manifolds, stainless turbo headers tend to crack right where the pipes meet the flange at the head. If you weld a small triangular gusset from the flange to the top of each primary pipe, about 3/4" away from the flange, it makes a big improvement in strength at the flange, and could save you some headaches. Stainless doesn't tolerate the weight of the turbos and DP's with heat cycling so well.
Love the dice rolling approach. My style totally. My stock cast bottom end is still kicking after a $150 PAW rebuild kit and 10psi, 87 pump gas, no intercooler with 34* timing!
gs455david
05-14-2010, 05:54 PM
Will be tied back into the downpipe in terms of the wastegates. I don't plan on revving it too high so I hope this thing holds together halfway decent.

parachute mounted yesterday. Intercooler will be ordered end of week. 5 inch thick Precision or Bell good for 2000 cfm. Brakes will be done this coming week as should the downpipes and all the finish detail work. Will be boxing in the entire frame and throw some bracing in there to keep this thing stable at high speeds in quarter. Eighth mile track 6 miles from my house so that is a little convenient. Everything should fit under stock hood, but with a Stage 2 scoop. Having SD Tempest post some more pics. Wilwood master cylinder on as well. Looks like a real car now. I have been dying ever since I sold the supercharged GS.

Car should be on the road next month. My original block for the build was bad. Got another one. The final assembly on motor is occurring right now and then off to San Diego Auto Fab for final assembly. That long block ran me 17k so that wasn't exactly easy on the wallet. Got somewhere in the neighborhood of 45-50k in this car and it still needs interior and paint. Should be posting some pics and video within the next month. David

I know. It killed me to pull off both, but when I weighed how often it gets too hot or cold in San Diego and where the hell I was going to put everything with stock ac and power steering in place, that is when a reality check came in. It still has all steel panels and front and back seats though so it is kind of like a daily driver.

Once you get to this level , a 17k long block doesn't sound so bad, because an all aluminum Dart BBC would probably be close to that .

17K STOCK BLOCK longblock. Big difference. In my opinion T/A is really missing the mark by not releasing their block in iron. Casting it in aluminum is not necessary for the average enthusiast.
$6000 in aluminum = limited buyers and market
$3350 in iron = lots of sales to the serious Buick racer

Dart aluminum BBC block is 5K , and I hear you get what you pay for compared to the cheaper made World Products aluminum BBC. I see what you are saying, but if given the option, and I had worked my way to this higher level, I would pay the extra $2650 for the lighter weight repairable aluminum piece anyways. Its all a day dream for me though.
