My Buick occasionally stalls out when sitting in traffic at idle(just flames out) Then it will not restart----I have had to prime the carb with raw gas several times to get it to start again. Once running it is fine again. This motor throws off a lot of heat and I am wondering if it could be vapor lock causing my problem----the gas line in this car is rubber from the fuel tank to the carb. The portion from the fuel pump to the carb is directly over the top of the motor----any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I have replaced the carb once and the fuel pump twice. The engine itself has been completely rebuilt.

Is the exhaust manifold valve flapper stuck closed?

My 55 has done the same as your 57 twice. One time it was the exhaust flapper stuck partially closed. another time it was clogged fuel filter.

There are various methods used to cure the dreaded vapour lock. My 1929 Buick had many problems when I first got it back on the road.
The only tried and trusted method I found was to instal an electric fuel pump. You can mount it in the existing fuel line, down near the tank is best. Use the electric pump to prime the mechanical unit after days / weeks of non use. And also of course when the vapour lock problems occur. Just turn it on and blow the air lock through and turn it off until the next problem arises. :TU:

Thanks for the information---I have had an electric pump on my shelf for a while now----didn't want to put it in because the car is completely stock----however, it is probably the best alternative. Thanks again for your help!!
