What are the procedures to start an engine that has been standing for 12 months, and is only now back in the car. All the fuel lines are connected, she only needs a battery. Is there anything i should look out for?
Turn the key. :)
I'd start it, bring it to temp, and then maybe wait a bit and change the oil and I'd question the gas, so I'd run the fuel down near empty as comfortable and put in a new tankful.
I'd check all the fluid levels too, Trans, brakes, etc.
My car sat so long I changed everything. Brake fluid, power steering fluid, wheel bearing grease, trans fluid, oil, rear axle lube, and I went as far as modifying a gas cap with an air hose fitting and compressed the gas tank with air to push as much fuel out of the tank and into a 5 gallon can.
But she sat in storage 19 years.
Watch for leaks too. Sometimes the seals start leaking after they've sat for a while. My rear main just started leaking last week. :(

19 YEARS !! Good grief! Im currently suffering with the "what if syndrome" I'l just man up and start her! lol!

That's the spirit!
The car I have now sat in storage 19 years. The board member I bought it from in Texas poured some gas in the carb, hooked up a battery and it started. :)
My old car, which I bought in Kentucky in '88 (R.I.P) got rear ended in '96 and sat for 13 years and I used it as a donor for the Texas car. The engine had less than 5000 miles on it when it got hit. Just broken in.
So don't be afraid, just crank it up. I'm just glad I stood my ground against the wife for so long. :TU:

Ok ,,, pard,,,,[thats Yank for partner:laugh: ] What I would do is this ... take the spark plugs out and spin the engine over untill the oil pressure comes up.... then re install the plugs and fire it up.... be sure you have zddp in the oil or you will destroy the engine.... :Smarty: :Brow: then when it warms up , recheck every thing,,,, if it is a new engine rebuild,, retorque the heads and intake after the engine is warmed up....

Thermostats are bad to stick. (that's Alabama for; likely to stick). Also, keep an eye on the water pump. The seals and bearings are bad (likely) to fail on a car that sat up (has been standing) for while.

There are no rules as such, aslong as its Buick. I would agree with you the site is mainly domanated by "a" body cars 66 to 72. There are later cars Gn's and gnx's but 90% are Skylark's GS AND gsx's. If you can find Scotts email send them to me at buickskylarkcustom@yahoo.com (buickskylarkcustom@yahoo.com) and I'l glady post any of you photos and stories :TU:

I am not a mechanic, but it sure does help to have mechanic buddies:pray: . What you dont see is the third start or the lack of it. The engine shock the spark plugs loose ( thats my excuse ) an then the oil cooler pipe earthed out on the starter:rolleyes:, That was fun! Im after a new oil cooler now as the one in the radiator is pants.
Go for a seperated transcooler! :beer
