Finally got around to pulling my Invicta Custom out of the barn and doing a full brake redo. The previous owner installed rims off of a 65 Riveria. After all was done i dropped it down and started to pull away only to notice that the Riveria rims will not fully seat in the back!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I believe do to the size of the axle hat. Any ideas on how to get around this safely???????? I like the rims but will change it if needed to. And if I do what will fit?????????????

Run a set of wheel spacers, I got a set from Summit Racing.

I'm not sure what you mean by the Axel hat but I think your talking about the steel ring in the center of the wheel on the inside. if thats the case I had that problem years ago with some Buick wheels I tried to put on a Chevy. I just took a sharp chisel and cut the welds then removed the ring. fit perfect after that.

X2.
I've done the same on several occasions over the years.

'65 and '66-'70 chrome wheels had a register ring welded on the reverse side of the hub. As Steve and Dale stated, by removing this register ring, the rim will fit flat against the rear drums without the need of spacers. :TU:

There is no ring that I can see so mabe they are newer, the problem is the inside diameter in the back of and center of the rim is actualy smaller than the hubcentric register, ring of the axle. I am going to have to run thin (1/4") spacers to get around it as suggested above :)

Thanks guys :)

Different hub diameters over some of the Riv wheels. I think 63-64 were larger than the 65's. There is a chart somewhere that lists them all and the hub sizes.

I used the 3/16th spacers on my 64. I have the 66-70 rims with register ring. Works great.

I don't like using spacers on our big HEAVY cars. Have you installed longer studs to make up for the thickness of spacers???? I know many have done this without any problems, but I wouldn't want to be the one to find out!!!!! What I did on my '61 LeSabre was to have the drum hubs cut on a 45* angle so the wheels fit over them all the way without binding. Did the same with the rear axle shafts & left a small lip for the drum to be centered on. If you try bolting up those wheels without spacers or doing what I did you will bend the aluminum drums!!!!
