Many years ago, after I got my 1955 Buick Special, my brother gave me a Brochure from 1955 Buick dealers. I managed to whip this thing into a web site - that is devoted to 1955 Buicks!

Hi Andy , your site is very cool :TU: I know this thread is kinda old but I just found it ... By any chance is your Buick a Canadian car ? I'm looking for some info of a Canadian 55 Special VIN it start by 544378

5 - year 1955 (Canadian)
4 - Buick division(?)
43 78 - Model (?)

It's a 2dr hardtop (Riviera)

By comparaison what are the firsts # of an American VIN

And it has the paint color code 583 and trim code 620 but I don't know what it looks like and the name of these colors :Do No:

I know that the 55 Buick Shop Manual tells you how to disect a VIN. I left mine in my trunk when I took the car in to get "new". That was 2.5 years ago. I'll try to stop by the shop this week and see if its in one of those many boxes of parts.

Also - I don't have my VIN handy.

A good place to look for information about your car is the body tag (probably under the hood somewhere on the firewall). My car has the following tag:

General Motors Corporation
FLINT, MICH.

1955 MOD. 55-43
STYLE No 55-4439
BODY No BT 6 7 2
TRIM No 448
PAINT No BBB
TOP ACC.
BODY BY FISHER

I know I've done the detective work on this in the past, but I don't think I ever wrote it down anywhere.

I have a 4-Door, 6-Passenger, Buick Special Riviera (Hard Top). I would guess that is what "55-43" means. They really don't mention the 4-Door Riviera's at all in the literature. You see references to Special Model 46R fairly often - that is the 2-door Riviera. (Actually, no 4-Door Rivs ever get mentioned in collatoral material.)

The "BBB" tells us, that from the factory, it had a white top, a white body, and was white under the "sweepspear". Not too exciting.

According to the owners manual:

"There are two numbers which identify your car. They are recorded by License Bureau of the state in which your car is licensed.
Serial Number - All Series
The serial number is located on a plate affixed to the left front pillar post below the belt molding line and is visible by opening the left front door.

Engine Number

The engine number is located on the outside of the left bank of cylinders on an extension of the top face of the block, halfway back.

The 264 engines are further identified by a cast groove approximately 1/8" wide on the side of the extension which was provided for stamping the serial number."

Serial Number = VIN (?). I really have to get my car back out of that shop...

I'll dig a bit deeper and let you know...

Hi , I'd like to know for the 1955 Buick (US built) what are the 2 firsts numbers .

My tought is the first is the serial model and the 2nd digit (a letter) for the year

ie: 1st digit=
4=Special , 5=super , 6=Century , 7=Roadmaster

2nd digit =
A=1954, B=1955, C=1956, D=1957, E=1958, F=1959, G=1960, H=1961, I=1962, J=1963, K=1964


But after I was told that the 1st digit could be like that :
1= flint 2= southgate 3= linden 4 = Kansas city 5= Wilmington 6 = Atlanta 7= Framingham


What is the right option ?

You are almost correct :

first digit in a 1955 Vin number (US production) is for the model : 4=Special 5=Super 6=Century and 7=Roadmaster

Second digit is the year : A=1954 B=1955 C=1956 and so on !

third digit is the assembly plant : 1=Flint 2=South Gate 3=Linden 4=Kansas City 5=Wilmingon 6=Atlanta 7=Framingham 8=Arlington

After these digits, the numbers starts at each plant from the 001001 and up.

Example : the first 1955 Flint built Buick (If it was a Special) would have the Vinnumber 4B1001001

1955 Engine numbers starts at V-720080
