initial vs total timing ?

how can i get more initial and less total. The 350 motor made the most power at 41 total on the dyno with no pinging and now in the car I'm down to 33 total and still pings. It feels slow with no crisp throttle. I'm some what confuse, I've added stiffer distributor springs but no results. The bushing that comes with a curve kit doesn't look big enough to do anything but should that work? It's basically a stock built motor with a little more duration cam and makes good torque (is what I was after). It is the wifes driver not a race car so performance and economy is a goal.

You need to limit the mechanical advance so you can run more initial without too much total advance. You should use lighter springs to get the advance in by 2500 RPM. You should also use the bushing to avoid overadvance. To limit the mechanical advance weld up the slot that the bushing rides in and custom file it to the right size. Most GM distributors have about 20* mechanical at the crank. Try to limit that to 10-15* and make the rest up in initial. Hope that helps.
