Have a neighbor looking at a 70 SS 454 Chevelle, which I know nothing about, how do you go about determing
1) if it is a real SS
2) if it is a real SS 454?
The original motor is not with the car, it supposedly was replaced by GM under warranty and has a "C" on the block (what does that mean?).
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, Chris

Chris,
I will scan the 1970 Chevelle SS396/SS454 chapter of my Chevrolet SS Muscle Car Red Book for you later this evening (it's 6 P.M. where I am)
All 1970 Chevrolet engines were C coded (3 letter engine-code, first always a C)

Chris,
Just changed my signature to remind you guys that there are more ways to write Eric......
Hope the scans will help to figure out if your neighbour has a real SS Chevelle there

unless the car was built in canada or u have the build sheet or the window sticker, or there is a Z25 code on the firewall plate , there is really no way to verify whether or not the chevelle is a true SS . there is no indicator in the vin to denote SS .
a fellow (a classic car restorer) once stated that "gm built x number of ss chevelles in 1970 but 2x are in existence today" !
i think a "C" code on the block denoted a warranty replacement block .
