Oil Pressure

Guys and Gals,

I am looking for some feedback from some of the other racers regarding oil pressure. My 464 Buick engine is making around 700 hp and and goes through the traps at 6900 rpms. This engine made 136 trouble free passes last year but I am still concerned about oil "PRESSURE". Any and all modifications have been made to increase oil "VOLUME" but the pressure still seems low at 70 psi through the traps and then around 20 psi at an idle. These numbers are when the engine is HOT. So could anyone else elaborate on there engines oil pressure?

I'm sure you probably know it already,but the relief spring will govern MAX.oil pressure no matter how high you twist the engine.
70 psi hot is pretty good oil pressure going through the traps.

A general rule of thumb is 10 psi per 1000 rpm's. 70 pounds is good. The last motor I ran I had 60psi at 6800 thru the lights. It lived for 5 years with much abuse on the track and street:Brow: . I'm trying to decide if I should even do the oil mods if I'm going to run a stock pump with a booster plate. I already have the grooved bearings, I just can't decide if it's really worth it to do all that drilling.:Do No:

Hi John,
My 462 makes 70-72 psi through the traps at the same rpm. About 40 psi at my idle rpm of 1300 with the engine hot. I believe you run slightly looser clearances than I do, perhaps .0005 more on the mains. That would explain the slightly lower oil pressure at idle. In any case, you've got no worries. See you Sunday. No racing for me though-- I'm babysitting!
