I don't have a 64 anymore, since I sold mine a few years ago, but I went ahead and answered anyways, since I know the new owner isn't a member of this board.

There wasn't a choice for "perfect" or The nicest you have ever seen" so I went with very good.

Ex. car - 64 Skylark with 23k original miles, unrestored.

Jerseysky66

I figured if you have a perfect steering wheel than it is very good with no cracks. If it is not perfect and no cracks than it would be fair condition no cracks and if it is not cracked that much than it would be fair condition and some cracks and if it is really cracked than it would be bad condition mega cracks.
Thank you,
Jerseysky66 (Bob)

Guys,
I checked into making these a few years back when I had my 66 GS, but figured no one would buy them for the price I would have to ask.
Duane

Marvin's65
11-18-2003, 05:31 PM
what where the prices?

Duane
11-18-2003, 06:38 PM
I knew someone would ask,
I would have to check, but I think they would have sold for $275 each. Now that was back around 95, so with the price of molds/plastics today they would probably be in the $375-$400 range. This was with me re-using the old hubs and injecting the new plastic around it, like I do with the GSX wheels.
I could check into seeing what it would cost to have the hubs machined to make new wheels, but there probably isn't enough demand for these wheels even though there doesn't seem to be any decent ones for sale.
I would also need an NOS one to use for the mold, and a few cracked originals to take apart to determine what the internal skeleton looks like.

Would this be a simulated wood wheel?

P.S.

Duane, thanks for the info that you sent me (both times)...:TU:

Duane

Mike,
No these wheels are hard plastic and match the interior color of the car. The centers are dished out and the horn button fits inside this area. Actually they look pretty nice when new, but generally are prone to cracking. Decent ones are very hard to find and generally need repaired anyway. They were hard to find 10 years ago and were expensive then.

Glad to help with the info.
Duane

PS. If there was enough interest I would make these wheels. Again, I would require the use of an NOS wheel to make the mold, but it would be returned to the owner completely unharmed.

What about the Special/or Wagon does it have the same steering wheel??

Sorry to jump in on you 64-66 guys but I would like to know if the '68 3 spoke simulated wood wheel is being reproduced. Does anyone know? They were used on Chevy's so it would be hard to believe that they are not being made. I just have not seen them.

Duane, I would have one or two bad wheels you could take apart, and I would donate to the project. I have a 65 and 66 in need of original wheels. I have resorted to using a late model sport wheel on the 65 and a wood 68 on the 66. I would be interested in at least one if the project flies. Bill Sangster.

There is an NOS wheel on E-bay right now. I have found two NOS ones over the years--one is in my '64 and the other in my '66. I still need one for my '65 GS and would gladly buy one of the repos if you get them made. I have about 8, mega cracked cores laying in my attic I would donate for the cause.

I'm sorry but I couldn't pay that much for a new wheel. I would first have to try one of the wheel resto kits out there first. Has anyone ever tried these? I think Eastwood and por-15 have them.

Brian
11-20-2003, 08:47 AM
I tried the repair putty and it looked good for about a year, and that was on a car that spend 360 out of 365 days sitting in the garage. After that, the putty started to separate from the plastic on the steering wheel because the plastic used to make those wheels continues to shrink.
What can be done though is to use that putty to repair a wheel to look perfect, then use that as the wheel to make the mold for a new one. I would be glad to take one of the cores I have and repair it in that way and donate it to be used to make the mold. It will take me some time, but when I am done it will be right. I have a steering wheel that is in relatively good shape that I keep stored in the house that could be used for this.

I think $400 is out of my price range for a repo steering wheel. It would certainly be nice to have one, but I think I could only spend about $200...

Mine isn't THAT bad... just a few cracks here and there.

Ethan,
If I charged $200.00 for a wheel, that wouldn't pay for the materials and time it would take to make one. Not to mention paying between $2500-$3500 for a mold that will most likely need recored after 75-100 pieces.
You guys floor me.

Please take it easy:blast: . We will get no were like this:spank: . Lets just see how it goes. If I had a bunch of money I would dish out the $2,500-3,000 myself. I don't know that much about the process or cost of making wheels. Have you ever done this before Duane? What type of machine do you use to put the plastic around the wheel? Is it an injection molding machine? Maybe we can find someone on this site to help with the mold making? Let us know what you think Duane.

I don't know about the rest of you but I have been trying to get my car done since 1996? I'm down to only a few parts left for a show quality car. Please don't talk about prices. Lets just vote and maybe we can ask some questions to Duane and maybe we will get lucky and find someone to make a mold for less. I may even have a couple of connections. My dad was in the plastic business for more than 30 years. The only thing is it is in the blow molding end of the business. How about anyone else?

Maybe I'm missing something here but........ The poll just asked the condition of your original wheel, so I responded.

I did not see the question asked whether or not I wanted a repro wheel or not.:Do No:

If anyone is thinking about putting their hard earned money into a project making these wheels then I think the wording of the poll should be considerably different.

Yes my wheel is badly cracked but I will probably be replacing it with an aftermarket style, probably something along the lines of a Grant #967.

Why? I don't think anyone was suggesting that the price was too much for the work and investment involved. Some of us just don't have that kind of disposable income (believe me, I wish I did). Us mid sixties buick owners are at a disadvantage when it comes to parts so I really hope you guys can make this happen. I'm just sorry that I'll have to live with the wheel that I have:ball:

Exactly... Sorry I wasn't more clear. I thought you guys were just getting an idea of who would actually buy one if they were made. I'd love to be able to afford a repo wheel. I actually think $400 is pretty cheap. Just can't afford it!! Maybe next year... we'll see!:Comp:

When I first took my '66 Skylark to a Buick show about six years ago, another owner asked me if I had tried to find an NOS steering wheel. I said that mine was OK. He laughed and said that mine must be cracked because he had spent years looking and had never seen a '66 wheel that wasn't cracked. I replied that I had my car since new and that it was not cracked.

He went to my car and showed me cracks that I had never before noticed. He was right.

The lesson here is that the need is there but no one has found it worthwhile to offer reproductions. If there was not sufficient demand years ago when more of these cars existed, there is little hope of doing it now.

I paid one arm and half a leg for a beautiful grant wheel. It's a banjo type mahogany with a very nice finish. I can't wait till the rest of the car is done so I can install it. I have the original aswell but, it has some cracks and I really wanted to set off the new interior with a beautiful finishing touch. I had first bought the black grip three spoke ralley wheel but, with red interior, it looked pretty cheap, so I took it back and plunked down my arm and half leg to pay for it....
btw...I didn't tell my wife how much it cost.

Nope
The diameter of the steering column is smaller in 64-66 than 70.
70 wheels aren't hard to come by. I have a near perfect dark brown 70 deluxe wheel if you are interested

I think the problem is the cost. How many people are going to pay $400 for a steering wheel? It is alot of money. I don't know anything about the process and cost for reproducing steering wheels. I thought that the last NOS Steering Wheel that was won on eBay was going to be used for a mold. I don't know the winner of that auction and I am not sure if he is a member to this site.
Jerseysky66

nailheadina67
04-20-2004, 08:14 AM
I realize the wheel you are discussing is different than the 2 spoke wheel used on the full size cars, but I will tell you this........I would gladly pay $400 for a complete new one with the cap and horn bar. In fact, all I need is a good cap (mine is cracked) and would pay $100 for a repro one if someone would make it. Even just the plastic insert.

I think if you advertise what you are selling and market it well you could not go wrong. You could even sell them one at a time on ebay to get the word out, I have seen other things such as reprinted manuals sold that way. Once the word gets out, they will sell. There is a demand for these steering wheels.:bglasses:

Jerseysky66
05-09-2004, 06:52 AM
Well so far 44 people have voted, if you could get 40 people to buy a wheel at $400 that would be a total of $16,000. Personally I think $400 is too much myself. I don't think I would pay more than $200 myself. If someone made 100 wheels and charged $200 each that would total $20,000. I don't know what it cost to make a wheel. Is the GS/Skylark/Special steering wheel the same as the other model Buicks from the same time? If so please vote. Please vote on this poll if you have not voted already. I know there is more than 44 of these cars left.

Please vote at the top of the page. The poll starter out as just a poll. Then someone had a great idea about reproduction. Then they just decided that they did not care about it. I guess it is just the American way (MONEY talks BS Walks). If I had it my way I would make them anyway, but I don't know where to start:bglasses: .

Also will there be metal or chrome pieces to be made with these wheels? Frank

Brian
10-24-2004, 08:18 PM
I have a stack of about 6 of them in the attic in pretty sad shape. The only metal/chrome piece on them is the horn bar across the center, and they just attach to the wheel with 4 screws from the back. The '64-'65 had the same horn button, and the '66 had a style of its own. The big need is for the wheel--I have never come across a broken horn bar--at worst they just need re-chroming.
There is of course the metal core to the wheel, but with all the bad wheels out there, they should be easy to come by.
Feel free to contact me by E-mail or phone and I will help how ever I can--this is definitely at the top of the list of parts needed for these cars. I have 3 cars with this wheel and have managed to find NOS ones for two of them. I still need one for the 3rd car I am restoring now. Second on the list of parts needed for these cars is lower rear quarter panel patch panels--they all need that too.

Thank you for showing interest in the steering wheel. Mine is in very bad shape. I thought it was going to bust in pieces. I have to tell you I have been trying for 9 years to finish my car (66 SKYLARK), but nice chrome trim parts for these cars are impossible to find. Would you have an interest in helping us with them after the steering wheel. I'm sure we could come up with a ton of used trim pieces.

Either way I will take one--I had to paint one of the NOS ones I found for one of my cars anyway, so that is no big deal, just adds about another $75-$100 to the cost by time you get a good Urethane paint mixed in the right color and buy the hardner/thinner.

Joe, I would say you might want to start a thread/poll for the '64-'66 wood Riv. wheels. See how much interest people have in it.

I would think that if someone reproduced this wheel they would be able to sell a bunch of them here and be able to sell on eBay. Plus maybe sell some to these catalog companies like. Year one, Original Parts Group and others. If I had the knowledge I would take on this project.

You might be able to sell some of the wheels to people with the bigger size Buicks. I am not sure if they will fit, but if they do it will be closer than anything else they can get. Who is going to repro stuff for the bigger Buicks.

Please vote in the poll.

instead of wheels has anyone thought of body parts like 66 gs hoods or even just quarter panels maybe you east coast guys have alot of this stuff floatin' around but out west, these items are hard to find so for all us 64-66 guys (esp.66's)lets think bigger.oh yea $225-250 would be my max on a non-wood repro wheel.

Jerseysky66

I think the cost of the mold for the quarter panels is too much. I would like to see them made. I also would like to see some of the tail light bezels made. I have been search for parts since 1996 and have only seen a couple of NOS tail light bezels.

Actually it was more of a comment on where I usually end up at any place where there is a line. I'm sure the production run will more than cover those who've previously reponded in this thread. :TU:

I need at least 1 and maybe 2 black steering wheels for the 65 GS . The most important thing would be that it looks like new and original . I would think based on what I've read that a price of $349 to $389 would be most reasonable based on what I've heard a quality rebuild costs and the time it takes them .

BuickGS65
07-09-2007, 12:45 AM
I'm not sure of the "exact" color names, but the steering wheels always matched the interior (except white?)... So the 64-66 steering wheels came in:

Black
Blue
Red
Tan/Saddle
Green [Gran Sports did not come in green interiors (?)]

Frank -- any word on when the black steering wheels will be completed?

Actually, there are more variations on the color:

Black
Dark red
Medium Blue
Light Blue
Tan
Dark Brown
Light Green
Charcoal Gray (came in cars with white interior)

I think there may also have been a dark green, but I haven't seen one before--all the others I have seen before (I have at least one of each in my parts room except for the charcoal gray, and light green).

I have painted two in the past--one used standard wheel and one deluxe NOS wheel. I used a single stage Urethane paint with a hardner/activator. You will need to add some flattner to some of the colors to keep them from being to shiny--it makes it look more like plastic instead of being painted.
Don't use enamel, laquer or any clear coat paints. The enamel and laquer will not hold up, and the clear coat paints won't look right--it will look painted, whereas a single stage urethane paint with the right amount of flattner looks like a plastic wheel that isn't painted.

As stated in a earlier post in this thread, I would like to order one of these steering wheels for my '66 Skylark GS. Haven't read back but the past few pages posted here, but from what my eyes tell me is that these wheels are ready for purchase, BUT, the person who's selling them is gone until April or so, and no orders will be filled until their return. I'm still trying to figure out who has them from the posts here, jerseysky66 or buicfrank? Shed some light please? Thanks. Jim

Received my wheels yesterday!
They are very nice pieces, WELL worth the price!
When compared to one of my used and abused original wheels, the repo does seem to have sharper lines....it's noticable where the center bar meets the rim, and on the finger notches. It's very likely I'm just seeing 40 years of wear on the original.
I'll have to dig up another original wheel for a better comparison.

They do need some finishing... The mold parting lines received a quick flashing-removal, and need to be smoothed some more, maybe with a fine file and then some wet-sanding.
The finish is a low-gloss black, similar to a Krylon satin-black spray-can paint. My one original has a gloss finish...so a paint job is in order.

All in all, these appear to be very well made. We are very fortunate that Frank took on this project and offered them to us for a great price!
Thanks Frank!:beers2:

Recieved my steering wheel today also.

I echo all of Walts comments as they will require a little bit of finish work in order to be "car ready" but overall.. THESE ARE AWESOME PIECES! :TU:

These steering wheels are worth every cent and much needed in the 65 community!

Thank you Frank for sticking to your guns and making this project happen!

You guys are WELCOME.

I just wish I was a motivated as when I started this thread. I have not had my car out of the garage since the last time I was at Yardley's picnic  .

I am going to push myself and get the car at least ready enough to possibly make it to the picnic this year. My business and personal life are so busy right now.

I do want to Thank - Frank again. Without him you guys would still have to deal with cracked steering wheels.

Bob

Paint them with a automotive grade single stage urethane paint. I have painted several originals with that and it holds up great. Don't use clear coat paints--it won't look right and the clear coat won't hold up as well.
If your repo wheel is already the right color, it can be buffed out to a shine. I had a wheel hand made for my '65 GS and the guy that makes them hand polishes the plastic to a shine.
Do the metal cores in Frank's repo wheels have the two threaded holes on the bottom for a tilt column turn signal cancel cam? Not all of the originals had those two holes in them for some reason
