After pricing out those wheels, I wouldn't exactly call them "poverty caps". Expensive but very nice. Maybe I can find a set at the nats in May. I hope to see you and your car there. I can only get a few days off work that week so I'll fly into Nashville and drive up to BG. Thank God for UPS.

Thanks Mark. It's funny, nobody usually likes it because it looks so bad when faded and oxidized that they can't visualize it in base-coat/clear-coat. I had guys tell me it'd look awful when looking at the old faded paint. It now has almost a shimmery/glowing effect. I was very happy with it when it came out of the spray booth.

Here is my dad's 64 Riv. It's a 425 2x4's, and a 100 shot of NOS. Also has a 9" ford with 4.10's. On this pass it ran 12.8 with a 1.66 short time carrying the front wheels about 4-5 feet!

Hello,
This was my first 66 Riviera. ( I hope the picture uploads )
It was my first car also. I put a lot of work into this 400 dollar beauty. Paint job, white interior, trim parts and rebuilt the engine myself with my father's help. ( Or maybe I helped him ) The interior door panels were redone in a very short black shag. I liked them, even though a lot of people didn't. I owned the car for 3-4 years before I sold it. I could kick myself now for selling it. Actually I regretted selling it about 6 months after I did. That's why after all these years I bought another 66 Riv to take it's place. I'll post a picture of it in a later post.

Hello,
Here is a pic of my current Riv. It is a 1966 GS model. Thinking of painting it the same as my first one as seen in a previous post. It needs some work, but it will get there slowly. I installed sequential taillites on it. One of the things I wanted to do to the 1st Riv I owned. It will not be fixed up to stock but to my liking. Thinking of adding driving lites to it that swing down from under the front bumper when turned on. Also looking into custom tail lite lenses and front parking lamp lenses. Anyway a long way to go. If ever in Bergen County, NJ on a Saturday nite in the summer, try and stop by Whiskey Cafe in Lyndhurst ( down the block from Medevil Times ). The local ROA members are usually there.:beer

This is my first attempt at posting a pic from my brandy new scanner. I'll try the shady shot where the paint actually looks good.... OK, I don't know what I'm doing wrong but every type of file I tried to use to post the pic the board rejected and told me the file was too big. I kept trying different types until it went through, but it's an attachment. What's next if I want to post like the rest of you did?

You will need to save the image as a JPG image. I would also recommend resizing the image to no more than 640x480 for a post here. If you are using Adobe Photoshop, use a compression of "6" when it asks you what quality to save at.
It should work from there. If it doesn't message me...I'll try to make it easier.

Joe, that 37 looks great. My pop had a 37 Chev a little lighter red than that at one time. What ET do you get out of both that and the 57?
The Old Guy
06-30-2002, 01:07 PM
The 37 has a 2.56 axle and runs 14.0s at 100MPH in the first two gears. I built it for the highway and did not know at the time that a 200-4R would hold up under the 455. I have never had the 57 down the track. I have not installed seat belts and they won't let it run. It is a one legger anyway .so it would just melt the right tire. My 72 GS has a 200-4R and a 3.31axle ,and that is the perfect compromise. It is a 3990 lb. convert with AC and it runs in full street trim 13.0s at 106-7 and pulls 18 MPG

Adam,
How long till I can do it, or how long will it take??
How long till I can do it.... depends on how things go... looking at Winter/Spring 2004
How long will it take?
That depends on how much cage you want .. typically a full cage will take 6 weeks or so, start to finish. Obvioiusly, this will all be custom built.

Looks great! I'm still messing with color selections, mind if I ask what that is? color blind, pls bear with me...
dcm422
08-19-2002, 06:22 PM
Hi Clint,
The color is called "Sapphire Blue" and is an original 67 color. It was painted in an enamel from PPG back in 1985!
I don' t think it was Centauri and may have been a version of polyurethane. Somewhere I have some of the paint in the can from the body shop.
The dupont # is 867-98142 and Ditzler # is 13349. With these #'s I am pretty sure you could have it mixed (assuming you like it) in poly or 2 step like Deltron.
Honestly, I am surprised how well it has held up. My 70 GS is painted in Centauri in a similar blue (Gulfstream Blue) and it needs to be polished every so often as it dulls. Not the case with the 67. Just wash it and it looks great.
If I can anwer any other questions, just ask.
Thanks,
Mark

Thanks Mark, the car looks really straight & clean.
I'm really fond of that coloring scheme, light blues, greens, silvers. It'll help hide some of the nasty bodywork I require. Did you spray that yourself or was it done at a shop?
Ever heard of that color in a base/clear system?
dcm422
08-20-2002, 07:25 PM
Clint,
I had it done in a shop by one of the guys in our NE club at the time. He had a shop on Long Island and did a great job on the car. There was rust at the fender bottoms and rear qtr bottoms. The wheel wells are original. Just some small patches in the trunk.
I can do motors trannys etc. and can take the whole car apart but metal and paint work I leave to the pros.
As to the paint, I have been told that any color can be made into base/clear coat. I got a pint of "Wedgewood Blue" for my 64 Skylark and was told it was available in that. That is why I gave you the paint codes. With them, you can have the color mixed.
Here as some pics of the 67 the day I got it in 1981.......what a difference.:eek2:

There's been some lively discussion around here as of late about me turning wrenches on the ol' GS again. Heck, my son is now 6-years old (actually closer to 7) which means he can lend a helping hand now. :pp
As for the motor, well it just developed a rod knock. When I tore it down I had one spun rod bearing and damaged crank journal. Don't know why but that'll need to be rectified. Cylinder walls should clean up fine with a hone. It's the numbers-matching original block, bored .030. (Those stinkin' pistons were a bear to find back in 1987. Can't imagine locating any now.)
BTW, George, this car, like me, is originally from NJ (hence, the body rot :af: ). That is where I restored it the first time. I brought it with me to Tennessee when I moved here in 1991.

Here is the 65 GS I owned before my son was born. I bought it in Paradise, IN for $1200 dollars!! It was a Flint built car with a Rochester Q-jet and a close ratio T-10 4spd. The car was basically stock with a street/strip clutch&pressure plate. I added a mallory coil and electronic ignition and a comp140 fuel pump and filter with 1/2" fuel line from the tank to carb. This baby would really take off the line but it was hard to keep the stock tires from going up in smoke. I was forced to sell when the engine knocked from too many drag races and we needed a family car for the new addition. Boy do I miss that car! I can't find my good pictures but this was taken shortly after I bought it.

harry, i love how you did the top on that car. i've seen painted tops with the trim before, but did they do gloss from the facxtory?
YellowLark
11-07-2002, 11:05 PM
David,
The car came with a black vinyl top.
Tried fitting two new tops on it in 1999, but was unhappy with the fit, even with pro's doing the fitting.
Then, I discovered that the car could have been ordered from the factory with a painted two-tone top.
So, off came the vinyl, followed by de-glueing and sanding.
The car was a repainted with basecoat/clearcoat using a 1985 Subaru yellow (computer match) and gloss black. The yellow is much glossier than the original, but I think that, well, shiney black is shiney black.
As a footnote, I asked the BCA Head Judge about the clearcoat and gloss, and he said "no problem" as long as the color was correct, which it appears to be.

11-07-2002, 11:23 PM
Harry,
My 67 had the identical 2-tone... err, well I assume so... I'm rather color blind. The top was a more flat black, almost the same sheen as the dash and pillars. The black lines really show off those sail panels, I am debating wether or not to keep the 2 tone or go all solid. Heh, seeing it really helps!

A lot of our cars start out this way. Most of the time we see the finished work on someones car and not how it began.
Mark
Speaking of "how it began"... here's my 66 Skylark as it looks now.. right at the beginning-- I just bought it about a month ago. I sure hope it looks better than this at the same time next year. Just finished gutting the interior-- working on getting a new right front floor pan, carpet, headliner, dash pad, etc. Right now I'm trying to budget and make some plans for the engine and body. I'm sure it'll be a while before it looks as nice as the others up here! Especially because I don't know what the heck I'm doing (that's why I read these forums!) :)

Ethan,
Great car, great potential!
Mine, at the top of this page, looked worse than yours a few years ago. Yours could not possibly have rust-out in more areas than mine had.
Go to car shows, get specialty vendor catalogs, visit not only Buick, but also Chevelle, GTO, Cutlass websites, as those "sister" cars have much in common.
If I told you how much money I have spent on restoring mine, you would sell yours....but, that's not really important, as there are much less expensive ways to do everything. What's most important is that you enjoy spending your time and money on the car. Post more pictures as you make progress.

Thanks! Actually, the car has next to no rust at all! I guess it pays to live in Cally. The only rust I could find is a little around the rear window (you know how water likes to pool up there) and the right front floor pan (looks like the car had a bad heater core at one point). Other than that, it has a ton of little dings and dents, but nothing really all that major.

Will do! I hope others will post their progress on the site as well... hopefully that will give me some ideas. It would be cool if there was a place on this site to post digital photos of Buick specific projects-- kind of like a user HOW TO section. I really dig the photo-based how to projects that I've seen scattered across the net.

George, the way that 67 looks, you prolly hurt your brain/memory just touching the gas pedal. lol. I have a 65 that looks alot like the other one in your pic. Do you have more pics of the 65? Is it the Sedan? (pillars) Mine is white with a red roof and red interior. Very clean, and on it's way to be even better. It has chrome rails around the roof that I always get asked about and I'm not too sure what the deal is with that. What tire sizes? Did you go 15x7 all around on the rims? Mine is still stock 14's w original spinner caps but that's ther next thing to go. Looking at maybe going with 15x7 Buick Rally's. I'd love to see what you've done to it. Maybe steal some ideas from ya. Mine is still very stock 300cid 4bbl w/ST 300 but I want to get the scoop on how to un-stock it the right way. Don't need a racing set up but, peeling some rubber and waking the neibors does sound like a must. You can read my Buick's story "Hapiness is a 65 worth fixing" in the newbie welcome wagon or in the "post your car's life story" thread. I going to post this e-mail aswell, maybe some others will chime in with ideas.

How is the damage going to be repaired? You simply can't buy a quarter panel for that car.

Or, have you been able to locate a parts car with a decent quarter?

I am still waiting for the Claims guy to pay $ though I aint waiting much longer. I may just pay myself and hope they cover it. She cleaned up real nice before. Yup, '56 Special. Rebuilt original 322 (stock rebuild with the exception of a reground cam-274 int.-278 ex), Dynaslush trans(soon to be swapped for a 3spd stick), nosed, side trim shaved, cut coils (about 2" drop) 2" dual exhaust w/glasspacks (this was a major pain in the rear, as on original single exhaust cars the drivers side manifold exists towards the front of the car). Nothing major, just a daily driven mild custom.
As soon as I can locate a third Stromberg 97, I'll be swapping in a three deuce setup.

You'll have to get new motor mounts from TA or find a set from a 1967 GS400. Its supposed to be a fairly simple swap. You need a new fan shroud too. Im eventually going to drop in a 1970 455 that Ive got laying around, but Ive got to freshen it up first. Im also going to use an electric fan instead of fooling around with fan shrouds.

Here is a picture of my old Riviera, it was my daily driver until I traded a friend for a 24 T roadster project. It is a 64 Body with a 65 front end on it. It was pretty bad shape when I got it, fixed a bunch of rust and repainted it. Did a bunch of small mechanical fix-ups and then it was a good driver, had a 401. It is lowered (obviously) 4 inches from stock. It rode real good and got a lot of attention. It still needed the complete interior redone and more fixing stuff, like the headlight motor, it was MIA when I got the car. I just got tired of dealing with it and wanted the roadster for fun cruising. This is not the same car as my blown nailhead Riviera, that one is a 63 Riviera.

4-speed came with which gears in 67?
buickgs400
04-23-2003, 10:16 PM
Ted,
The standard gear ratio for a 67 GS 4-speed is 3:36. The performance (non-special order) ratio was 3:55 (the order form that I received from the original owner indicates "performance rear" in which I checked the rear end and found that it was 3:55 gears).
That 66 Wildcat GS convertible (has the optional 3:42 rear)that I told you about is still parked in the storage yard (what a shame - top is gone with no protection) in which I keep checking every month to see if the owner has paid - yes, he keeps paying.
Take care Ted!

05-15-2003, 11:34 PM
Man, just hungry for info arent we. LOL.
OK, some history. I've been in the 5.0 Mustang crowd for about 10 years now, until recently. I sold my 88 GT which ran in the high 12's with a bone stock 110k mile motor. All suspension work and gearing. Well, I had a 64 Lark back in college(15 years ago) and have always hated that i had to sell it(major Minnesota rust bucket). I had just sold my stang, and happened to be looking at collector car trader online, and saw a couple Skylarks for sale. 1 was a bit far away, but the other(the one I bought) was only 2 hours away. I went and looked at it, gave a deposit, and the seller delivered the car to me the next morning on his way to the Super Chevy race in Pomona. I paid a whopping 1500 for the car.
Plans - this is gonna be a street/strip/mild g machine. This weekend I'm picking up a 12 bolt rear, and some ported bowtie heads and an intake for the small block chevy that will end up in the car. The motor plans are simple: build a nice 383 bottom end, combined with the heads andintake and a carb i've had for a while. Second phase of the engine will see fuel injection and twin Grand National turbos. Power thru a built th400 or 700r4. I will make custom rear control arms, use Global West front susp pieces, with HAL coilovers at all corners.
The body will remain as close to stock appearing as possible, except for the wheels and tires. Interior will get the resto treatment also, except for a pair of nice seats, a rollcage and harnesses.
I've had the car for almost 2 weeks.
Here is another couple pics for ya.

Hey guys, not that any of you need help but, since I've basicly removed every nut, bolt, and screw on mine, I've gained a great deal of knowledge on the ins n outs of these 65's...if you ask me before you start something, I might be able to help.
My project started with some rust in the back window that needed attention. Turned into total addiction. Now I have a garage full o Buick...lol
Going great! She's gonna be clean through n through. Bumper to bumper. Hoping for a June launch!!!

Hey, 65lark if you put a stock 455 Buick in that car I'm sure you'll have more power than a 383 chevy. It would almost be a sin to put a chevy motor in such a nice car.

I understand where you are coming from, but I dont want a big block in my car. I want the light weight and massive parts availability of the chevy. I've never been one for restorations and the orignallity part of this hobby. Hell, if it were real easy, I'd put the 347 Ford motor in the Skylark, but I wont.
Nick, I do have a question for you, check your PM's.

05-19-2003, 06:27 PM
BTW Phil/65Lark,
You are mistaken about the parts quest. Now that you are a Buick owner, you will find there is no shortage on parts. (we'll just keep that as our little secret though, ok) There are plenty to be found through guys here at v8 aswell as links to all you'll need. As you already know I have purchased a garage full, most from one or two places. Spend some time with your project and put a list together of things you would like to do. Ask a question or two and be pointed down the Buick Highway!! Please forget the whole chevy thing, it really is not as quick a fix as you may think. Pound for pound, dollar for dollar, you will be better off going all Buick all the time. Click around this board, do some searches, read and write some posts, and be enlightened!!

Well here is the car I bought last year. It will be getting the 455 hopefully within the next year. The interior is a mix and has a goofy little floor shifter that will be replaced with a console. Dave was nice enough to take this picture for me as I left it outside for the day.

Thanks guys, pictures of cars are like girls in dark bars. They look better than they really are.
Chris,
The wheels and tires are 15 inch and are 255/60 in the back and 235/60 in the front. I couldn't buy the BF's since there were French. The 14s are still on the 67 GS and I will be pulling the motor sometime soon. I have the core 455 for the 64 in the garage but the 67 comes first. I found out from JW it has big port heads:)
I hope eveything is going well with your little girl and if you are at the back to the 50's car show look for me or call me since I will be there.

George and Nick,
The seat material is red velour on the seating area and white leatherette on the sides I had him change the pattern of the rear seats so as to emulate the effect of rear bucket seats per his suggestion instead of the original pattern rear seat. The buttons are similar to the original pattern though. I opted for more of a custom feel than the original as found in Year One or OPG catalog. Hope this helps you understand that this car would be considered to be more of a slight custom than all original. I am going to put a white headliner and the exterior paint will be white pearl. I am also getting estimates of replacing all rubber trim and seals. Thanks for the opinions. Take care.

I'm new to this board, but I've been peaking in from time to time on some of the forums. This is a fantastic board with lots of tips and practicle assistants, but most of all full of alot of really helpful people. I thought I'd post a pic or two of my deuce n' a quarter, all 19 feet, as most of the guys on this board are running larks and GS's. This is a Nevada car up until October 2002 and I'm starting the process of restoring her. These cars are pretty rare up in Vancouver so it usually gets a lot of attention, especially after the roar of the 430 coming down the street :Brow: . No Kill Stories though, not enough gear! I look forward in participating in future discussion with you guys! Take it easy! :beer

Harvey;
Nice to hear from some local guys... I've been looking for some local clubs/gatherings to get involved with. The closest organised club seems to be on the Island (I plan on going to the show & shine in Victoria on July 27). I actually live in Vancouver, but Maple Ridge is not too far.
I don't know if you ever get out to the Java Hut in Langley on Friday or Saturday nights, but I'll be out there on Saturday (weather permitting). If you want to go, look for the car, I haven't seen any other '67 Electra's up here!

There seems to be one starting up on Monday's at the Tim Hortons in Coquitlam on United Blvd. I'm not driving my GS yet but if you plan on attending any of these let me know and I'll come by and meet you.

Bill,
those seats are going to be very cool looking in that 65. Are you going with red carpet aswell? Mine has the dark red interior...or...it did before I ripped it all out..lol. Now I have an almost finished dark red interior. I bought a grey headliner to match the original silver body and maroon carpet. I'll be putting this baby back together soon. I just returned from Vegas with some "Buick Funding"...lol I think I'll call my new paint job....Stardust-Silver..For those who don't know, the Stardust is a Hotel in Vegas:Brow: $$$$
Doug,
welcome aboard, and sweet looking Electra.
George,
you are such an ass-man..lol...nother great pic. You could take pics of that car with a toy camera at night and it would still look awsome. I noticed your tail light bezel dosent line up with the trunk exactly perfect, you might take a look at it..

Hi Chris,
Right now I don't have a Buick to drive. That was part of my motivation to look at the GS in storage. (It's running!) I haven't heard from Mark about viewing the car so I've pretty much forgotten about it. Also, I've just made a deal with speedybuickgs1 for a frame and body which I have to pick up in Montana so I think I've got enough on my plate now. We've had company for the past two weekends so my wife would like to do something. Even if I don't look at the 67 GS a trip to Seattle might be in order... she can shop and I'll go to the show. By the way, where is the show in Puyallup.
cjp69
06-17-2003, 10:31 AM
Harvey,
The show in Puyallup is at the old Buick auto dealership, which doesn't help you one bit. I know how to get there, but I would be hard pressed to give someone else good enough directions.
Here is an email address for Greg Powers, who is one of the officers of the Buick Club, he should be able to get you some good directions: powersfam@qwest.net
See you at the Ethyl Pump!
