Tube chassis car, the only way to go stupid-fast!

Many, many advantages to having a tube car.

1) Lighter

You can spend lots of money building a tube car, however you can spend lots of money on a high HP motor. A tube car, if built correctly, can easily run low 10's with very little motor.

2) Consistant

Tube cars, if built correctly, make very consistant bracket/class race cars.

3) Much less weight off the front of the car.

The idea is to have a cars front end weight closer to 50% of the total weight of the car. Back halfs and stock chassis are very front heavy. The car will respond much better with chassis tuning with the weight off the front end.

4) Stronger

Show me a low 10 sec GS and I'll show you a tweaked frame.

There are many other reasons to tube frame your car and I could ramble on forever, but probably one of the biggest reason is "IT'S JUST LOOKS COOL".:Brow:

Personally,

I got no use for one. The one in Mikes post above that Tri-Shield built is one of a very few exceptions though. A cleanly done tube car is awesome.

But, when you look around, there are a whole h3!! of a lot of 9 second factory frame cars out there. And some do that on small tires. I watch tube frame cars, Pro mod and both Pro stocks. But lately I have been looking into chassis' and such in some of the real 10.5'' tire classes in the central states and have talked to a few folks about them on the phone. Thats cool to me.

In reponse to your question "would I race a tube chassis car?", Yup I sure would, I race "against" them every weekend I go to the track.

I wouldn't do it to my car, but I would love to buy someone else's tube car AFTER I won the Powerball. Hence my "if I had the money" vote.

I've been thinking about putting the stock engine back in my car and getting a race-only Regal and sticking my current engine in it. Should be a mid-to-high 10 second car losing about 1200 pounds!

The purple car has a 535 cubic inch Buick motor in it. It has all the good stuff, dry sump, Stage 3 heads and the list goes on. It use to run on alcohol 3 or 4 years ago. It hasn’t been at a Buick event in as long. I think the last time anyone saw it was at Norwalk almost 4 years ago.

It has a full fiberglass lift off front end also.

It all depends on what you want.A square tube car will be cheaper than a round tube car.Mild steel cheaper than chrome moly. Then you need to decide your ultimate goal et wise 8.50 or faster you will need a sfi certification.A mild steel square tube car will be 10-15k range moly cage with that add 2-3k to that.A round tube moly sfi car will be in the 20-80k range depending on who you have do it and what you supply parts wise.A complete round tube Prostock from Bickel Rj's or Haas is around 125k.You need to find a reputable chassis shop in your area and sit down to figure out what YOU want. Then you can better talk $ wise.

like Kevin said it all about what you want and what you can spend,
if your doing a car it dosnt pay anymore to build square tube or mild steel, the resale value is nil,we havent done mild steel anything in close to 6 yrs,[even all rollbars now are done in c/m, that way it can always be upgraded]
pricey is a relative term, there are so many ways to do backhalves ,it all up to what the customer wants, then you go from there,if its a street car,if its a show car or you just want a back half car, we just did a chrome moly,,d round tubed[rear frame ] 4 linked car with full interior for about 10,5 again depends on type of wheels and other things ,but this is a street car, G body ,with 14x31 inch street tires on it,
a 25-5 car like my buick is good to 7.50 and cost about 45-4800 dollars[and it all chrome moly
a 25-2 car firewall back car, can cost from 24-30k again depending on options
and a basic,[again c/m, round tube] back half costs abot 12-16 k
thats with you just bringing in car and us getting the parts wheels/tire included[i.e. prostar or equal, not bogarts or egual, lol], but there are so many variables that when you compare you need to write all down so you are comparing apples to apples, not apples to oranges, :Comp: bob

well maybe someday, i dont think it would go further than 9s, but i just love the look and the alum int. they have, i guess you could just back half it but not looking for the large tires yet, i'll try and get there with fiberglass and tourqe :3gears: saw a couple on ebay months back , thought they were tube cars, any drwback to buying one a couple years old, do they "go bad" sorry, not my thread so wont ask about my prodjects anymore, would love to see pics of some, thanks all, .dont forget to sign your checks....___2006__....

The guys I work with haven't done a square tube car in atleast 6 years and same as Bob everything is moly now.As a matter of fact if a guy came in wanting a mild job it would cost the same as they buy moly in bulk and get a pretty good deal and they would have to order mild in for the job.
For an example My car in the avitar is a round tube 3/4 back half(round tube from the firewall back) with a SFI 25.2 cert.To duplicate it would be in the 30-40k range. This includes a one off custom front suspension using stock mounting points and converted to a coil over shocks. The rear end has full floating rear axles. The rear shocks are Koni electric.70% of the tin work is done in carbon fiber. This is a high end example but shows how things add up.If you didn't go nuts with the carbon fiber and floater axles etc you could save 8-10k and build the same thing for 20-25k.I afforded mine buy doing alot of the labor myself(I work for Raceengineering on the side).
