Does anyone know what the hell the little box under the hood does in a '65 skylark? It’s a little box that says Delco (Something) on it. I can read it since its rusty as hell; there is a clip of 4 wires that go into the left side of it (like you were sitting in the car) and one on top connected to a small cylinder of something. It’s screwed right to the firewall above the engine almost in the middle of the car. I put in a new battery today since the old one died on me, and when I hooked it up the box started clicking like hell, every time I would touch the wire on the battery (I had one wire bolted in to the battery already) Then I started it and turned the car off, but the generator light would stay on even after I took the key out. I’m thinking that’s why my old battery died but it was made in ’94 so I couldn’t recharge it anymore to get it to work. I think it’s a relay or maybe the ignition but I’m not sure. The old one is in the trunk of the car, this tells me that the old one was bad to (since I hooked it up and found it did the same thing as the one on there) but it also lets me know that maybe those go bad on the car quickly? Let me know cuz I need to replace it but I don’t know what to call it when I’m looking for one!
Or what do you think the prob is with my generator light staying on?
thanks

That little box is your voltage regulator. The cylinder looking thing is a capacitor (noise suppresor). Sounds like the regulator is bad causing your problems.

Voltage Regulater, $10 at autozone. Can cause all kinds of problems with charging system. Should be the first thing to check, then alt...
