Got two different dealer codes Help!

OK so I have my protect-o-plate with a dealer code of 25-298. The owners address is in Portland Oregon with a sale date of 6-16-70. But no other dealer info is on the metal plate or the glued on card. But I also have a bill for a fuel pump inspection from Smythe Buick in San Jose, Ca dealer code 23-523 from 8/25/70. The car had 3342 miles and the plate was FDQ299. Now, the reason I'm asking is I'm trying to set up a window sticker with Mike Trom for my car and I'm confused. The FDQ299 looks like a California Black plate #. And how did this car sell in Oregon, but wind up being serviced in San Jose only 2 months later? Could the car have been sold at Smythe but ordered through dealer 25-298 to avoid the California emissions requirements of which my car has none? Would someone order a 350-2 Skylark and go through all the trouble?

Oregon plates had/have the same layout as you have described above. they had 3 letters and 3 numbers. Bob

Car may have been ordered by one dealer for inventory not a sold unit;then another dealer needed the car and got it from the first dealer to sell to thier customer who was the cars first owner thus two different dealer codes.

Rusty that makes sense. I wonder if Smythe would still have records of selling the car, if they in fact did.

But why would the 25-298 be on the plate if Smythe (23-523) sold it as you suggest?

Can anyone help with who this dealer is? It's not on Mark Macoubrie's site.

this is from a 1968 dealer list. the dealership may be long gone. also, i doubt they would have info from that long ago, most big city dealerships throw out the old paperwork, but i have been in attics of old dealerships out in the country where they still had 35-40 year old invoices, but that is very rare.

i think the car was originally delivered to dealership 25-298, then possibly resold to Smythe. or ?

I agree it'll be a gamble if they had any paperwork from that far back. But you never know, I got in touch with the original dealer of a 67 LeSabre I had once, they were in Kansas City. I wanted to get a dealer badge for the trunk, although they didn’t have old ones available, they invited me to come out and rummage through their boxes of old records and microfiche for the original paperwork on the car.

So my point being, it doesn’t hurt to call and speak to the general manager. You may want to ask for the owner, but Smythe has several dealerships, selling everything from GM to Mercedes to Vovlo so you may not find “a” owner.

Marco- No Sloan Documentation. I thought it was just for GS's. I really didn't think it was worth it for a Skylark.

Henry- Smythe is still there. I checked it last night. My thing is this- the original owner had a Portland Or. address. Maybe they moved? I am the third owner and I know the car was in the San Jose area for years. Thanks for the dealer addresses. I have to make some calls tonight.

isnt it possible that the car was sold in Oregon and that the owner drove ity down to California on vacation and stopped in at a dealership for a problem?. the license plate format and numbers you posted above are EXACTLY like Oregon plates. it wouldnt be the first time that a person took their car to a different dealer for a problem. Your car probably came with the 'volcano' type hubcaps.

Deluxe Wheel Covers (volcano hub caps) were an option, so if they are not listed in the Sloan documentation, you probably did have poverty caps.

Deluxe wheel covers had spokes. I have pictures at home - hopefully I'll post them tonight. I may have posted the picture here, but I cant find it.

Marco--I don't think what you posted is for 1970. I'm 99.99999% sure that V7 Super Sport Wheel did not exist in 70. And the center caps shown have silver centers.

In 1970 V7 Super Sport Wheel was painted sport wheels with trim rings (as opposed to the unusual 71-72 variety in the pic posted).
