350 Blower Question

Heya guys. Been a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time since I last posted. For those of you who may or may not remember, my dad and I are working on a 1974 Buick Apollo.

We got it back from the high performance shop last summer, they totally redid the engine, 350, pulling 450 horse. We got her in the shop getting the bent part of the frame restraightened, after we'll get a nice paint job I think. Anyway, me and my dad were talking and wondering. Wondering about what, you say? Well, and remind yourselves we're not real major car pro's by a long shot....well me and dad wanted to look into first getting a Tunnel Ram put in. That didn't go well at all, since we have a 350 buick engine, it screwed us out of a chance of getting one. Then we wanted to look into a blower, like the picture below, even though it's not a buick, you'll get the idea :Brow: :

Now, we tried looking into something like this on our own, but came up empty handed and frankly really disappointed and I wanted to blow up the damn car. Bad enough it's so hard finding parts for the stupid thing! LOL. Is there ANY, and I mean ANY way of getting something like in the picture in our Apollo? Doesn't have to be as high mind you. Even if it means modifying something or whatever. I just wanna know if there is any possible way. I'm dying here....literally, look.... <cough cough> <deathly moaning> see?

Hampton Blowers offers a kit and so does Blower drive services. cost is around 3 grand for the kit but be aware that they require low compression to function well. Bob

I don't know of any roots blower kits for the 350, but XS Performance (http://xsperformance.net) has (or will have) centrifugal kits for the 350. It doesn't have the looks of a roots blower, but it is a supercharger.

if you want to go tunnel ram, find out who your local racers use for sheetmetal manifolds and have them make you one. Custom manifolds are usually cheaper than superchargers and if all you are looking for is the visual appeal of something sticking through the hood that should do the trick. Plus you wont have to rebuild the motor to suit the blower (i.e. tear it apart to run less compression). You won;t get the power of a super charged car but it sounds like you guys just want the look anyway. Just a thought.

You might be able to get away with just going with a thicker head gasket to bump your compression down a little. That could save the cost of a total teardown to change pistons, and you could do it with the motor in the car. Probably only work if you just wanted to go with a low boost application, and you can't go too thick anyway, but I figured I would throw it out there.

We've contacted Hampton Blowers, he says he make's 'em for our car, so that's pretty tight, but pop is still worried about the horsepower in that compared to the superchargers....i like the big blower anyway so.. :moonu: lol
