My Thermoquad sucks!

The secondaires won't open! :rant: This isn't the first time this has happened. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't :Do No: The butterflies won't move when the motor is running. But when you shut it off they are loose and move freely :af: !
Like I say this is an intermittent problem and has been for the last year or so.
Is it a vacuum problem?. :spank:

Does your carb have a choke?

On the Qjet there is a part in the choke linkage that will actually stop the secondaries from opening if it is not warmed up fully. Could this be your problem? Sticky linkage?

Yes, it does have a choke and it seems to open all the way. I was outside looking at the choke and I don't think the choke pulloff is working. So what the heck does the choke pulloff do?

The post says thermoquad but Adam is talking about a qjet. They are 2 very different carbs. Are you guys on the same page?? :Do No: The thermoquads developed a reputation for the plastic center casting heat warping which caused unresolvable problems. my2cents worth. :grin:

I know, but I was referring to the choke. I don't know how different these carbs are in that area, which is why I was trying to throw out ideas.

Is your Thermo Quad one of the race carbs or one of the OEM carbs? Also is it the butterflies that won't move or the secondary air door above the secondaries? The OEM carbs have linkage on the side of the carb opposite of the choke that won't allow the secondaries to open unless the choke is completely open. Check that and if it's your problem you could perform a little surgery and eliminate the problem, although if you get on it to quickly it might be bog city. HTH :TU:

Thanks for the info guy's, It does seem to be a choke problem, They never open when it's cold, but cold here is 105 deg in my garage!
Yes dave it is one of the OEM setups I think. I'll throw up a couple of pics in a few minutes. and maybe you can tell me what to try? What your saying is making sense!

On the choke side, the round thingy with a vacuum hose attached at the back and linkage that goes up at a 45 deg angle to the secondary air valve, that is the choke pulloff. You'll noticed that when the engine is running and cold, engine vacuum will pull the diaphragm and rod, preventing the secondaries from opening.

So if I pull the hose off and plug it will the secondaries be free to move? or will that cause other problems?

On the drivers side of the carb, there is a secondary lockout connected to the choke's fast idle linkage that prevents the secondaries from opening if the choke is on but also if the linkage isn't adjusted properly.You can bend the tab so the secondaries will come in regardless of both. I also have some old Carter service instructions that goes thru the basic settings of all the linkages,accelerator pump,secondaries, etc. that I could copy and fax or mail to you.

There is also a book exclusivly about Carter carbs that goes into a lot of detail about the Thermo Quad. It's by SA Design, the folks that do the Holly books and such. Written by Dave Emanuel it's called Super Tuning and Modifying Carter Carburators, the number to ask the bookstore for is
ISBN 0-931472-11-3 or just Part # 11-3. Has plenty of pics and detailed info on tuning and modifications.

To all that helped on this thank you very much. I went out and messed with the choke pull-off and the linkage and it really sucks now :laugh: Through all four barrels :3gears: :grin:
