View Full Version : Stage Two Hood Scoop for Da Wagon

As a result of clearance issue's with the new mill we are playing with some part's generously donated by some very cool board members.
First step, measure the exact center of the carb under the hood & drill a pilot hole 21 1/8 inches from the back of hood lip.
Dana/Beth Andrews

step two:
after scribing a circle 8" out from the pilot hole (16" hole size)
with the trusty Skil jig saw & a fresh metal cutting blade we have a hole.

step 3:
carefully cutting the under hood reinforcement with a dremel and about 20 or so heavy duty cutting discs so we can fasten the scoop easily.

I approve, just glad it's a track hood since it looks so cool with the GS hood on it!
As for my painting skills, the owner of my store is having me paint a tank that got damaged on a Honda RC51 that has 6 miles on it so I guess he trusts my work!

Dana,
Looks great. Could you tell me what your final dimensions from the rear of the installed scoop is to the rear of the hood?
Also the final measurement from the front of the installed scoop to the front of the hood????
I've already got my Fiberglass pre-installed scoop and hood from VFN on my car, I would just like to see what the difference is,if any?
There might be some variences,My car is a '70 GS w/SP-1 intake.
Will you guys be at Cecil?? Love to see the wagon again! :TU:

Thanks Kenny, I can really hack up a nice hood, huh?
Its like my last car, really a ten footer. :Dou:
As for the measurements, I got em from Paul Manuel and tried to follow a logical course with the rest.
The center of the back of the scoop is 12" from the center of the back of the hood.
The center of the front of the scoop ends up being 34" from the center front of the hood.
The sides are roughly 19" 3/8 side to side.
As for fastening , since I got the scoop used, it already had alot of rivet holes in the mounting lip, which kinda limits me so I am going with 3 sturdy bolts on each side & 2 in the back.
Paul suggested using some advesive weather stripping about 3/8" wide to help seal the scoop as it gets torqued down.
next up is flat black paint on the scoop & hood tach & drilling more holes for the tach.
Hoping to have it on the wagon by friday night so we can run it at Cordova in the BOP races there saturday :3gears:
Back to work :spank:

Congratulations on your 12.45. That is really moving for big ole honkin wagon. I think that is about one full second faster than that car ran when Kurt had it (If I remember correctly. If I am wrong I am sure he will correct me). Maybe with the Holley 950, the spacer and some slicks the 11's may be in your future. Have fun, but be careful.

I got to ask... where the F_ _ _ do you keep all that S_ _ _ .
There, I used both the words we have been emailing back and forth :beer
Oh BTW it's not quite a full second faster then when Kurt owned her, he ran a 13.31 (on a breezy day with a good tail wind :moonu: :pp  )

Beth
I keep them in various places, but only until we get our six car garage built. Then all the s--- will be where the f--- they belong. Beth, at this rate you are going to get us both kicked off this board.
That Kurt is a sly dog. He knows how to take advantage of a racing opportunity when it presents itself. They don't ask you how, just how fast. The first time I took our 70 GS to the track after we bought it a few weeks ago, it ran a 10.79 without the bottle. What a rush. I havn't had the "you know whats" or lapse in judgement to kick in the nitrous. Maybe in the future.
Tell Dana I said "hey" and he better get you all the toys you need to make da wagon run in the 11's.

10-26-2004, 07:17 AM
OK....to be correct there was no wind that day but it was a perfect air day, it was about 40 degrees, sunny and clear with real low humidity and I had the carb set up for exactly that! I always wanted to run it at Rockingham, where there is almost always a tailwind.
That 12.45 is awesome, once you get more seat time those numbers will drop!

Beth/Dana, congratulations on some new low et's!!! I bet JW's transplant is broken in by now - it certainly runs like all of the bugs have been worked out and now you're into the tuning phase. I really like the look of the stage 2 scoop on there - it looks mean now. I was wondering how the drag radials are working out on your wagon. Yeah Beth, haven't been on the board much at all. I've had serious computer problems at home for the last month and a half. Hmmm, I think it was just after you had sent me those pictures...Thanks for those - we'll have to get some more next year.
You're right about the scoop, but it also gives it a macho, Mustang-beating quality to it. Of course that kind of clashes with the pink bow...
You must let me know if you're going to Norwalk - I've been trying to work in that event for years. Having another wagon there racing would push me in the right direction.
My wagon has been running really well - it definitely responds to the cooler weather. I set a new best ET down in Cecil and that was with much warmer temperatures than we usually have. The wagon went an 11.49 @ 115mph with a lot of runs in the mid 11.50's. I cannot complain. Well, except for losing to Rick Martinez in the semi-finals of the gamblers race due to the throttle cable pulling thru the grommet on the gas pedal. Honest, I wasn't pushing it that hard!
Now it's time to step up - I just sent a set of aluminum heads down to Mr. Gessler for some work. He asked me how fast I wanted to go. I said "in the 10's". He said "no problem".
Next year should be a good year.

Beth & Dana
You know your wagon is what inspired me to buy my 70 and put a stage 2 in it!
I seen you wagon whent he previous owner posted it for sale, this was one of the 1st posts I seen when I first got on the board.
I was looking at buying it and hesitated and you got it..
At any rate reading all about it back then got me so interested in a wagon that I bought mine short after.
I really like the scoop, dont think I will do it to mine unless I run across a spare hood and get the fever.
I love mine, is the most fun I have ever had street racing the ricers. Plus all the kids and wife can fit in it well.
I have went to the track one time and clicked off a 12.5 at 104. I think she has alot more in it with a little more tuning and experience.

We no longer use the stock GS air cleaner, so it hangs on the garage wall, we have a drop base one now, Dana also had to trim the hood reinforcement a bit.

You guys ever see that wagon from New York (i think) that was the same color as yours, I think it was a '74 :Do No:
He was running some 11:90's back then... 1995-97?
It was in the GSXtra back then I believe,
Anyways, sweet wagon! I remember he said it was a long drive to Bowling Green with 4:10 gears, a wife and a baby. Still cool to drive that far and run that good and drive home.
Love the Scoop on yours :TU: :beer
