Some Of My 68 Riviera Pics

11-04-2004, 03:29 PM
This is a picture of my late Uncle Jim's 68 Riviera GS. Uncle Jim was an aerospace engineer and the original owner. He looked at the Toronado first, but saw the Riviera and fell in love with the styling. It was his first new car. He used it everyday to go back and forth to work until 1980 when a minor front end collision sidelined it. We repaired it and started re-painting it in the mid 80s. It remained dormant in his garage until his passing in 1999. My cousins gave me the car at that time because they said Uncle Jim would have wanted me to have it. I got it running and cleaned it up. I went through all the mechanicals and its now a solid dependable car. The only item that will be addressed is the cracking laquer paint job. Everything else will remain as Jim had it, correct or not. This is a very special car to me as I was very close with Uncle Jim. This is the car that got me obsessed with Buicks. Alot of memories tied to this one.

I bought her for $3000.00 summer of 2003. The interior is in excellent shape. The exterior needs some touches here and there.
I can't wait for summer to get here - she doesn't go out much in the rain (and I live in the Seattle area =).
Just ideling down the road she sets off car alarms.

I guess I am not the only one that had fun with sensitive car alarms. :Brow:
I had underground parking at one of my apartments and there was a Saab that would honk and flash every time I drove by it.
The best place for setting of alarms was the Mall of America parking ramps, nothing like some good vibrations from a big block Buick with a full exhaust system just minding it's own business. :beer

Jarrod, that's a gem. I got my drivers license in 1969 in practically an identical 69 Electra. White with black interior & top. Wasn't so great on icy streets (ours was non-posi), but I managed. She was a very comfortable cruiser.
After 2 1/2 years and some parts from members of this board, I finally finished the bodywork and paint. Thanks Cole and Eggman.

Ken
Ken,
The wheels are 17 X 7 Boyd Coddington Smoothie II's, I think the tires are 245/45 in the rear and 225/45 in the front. I got standard backspacing (4 inch I think), in hindsight, I probably should have gone 4 3/4 or so in the rear and got a bigger tire.
It has 2 inch dropped coils from Orignal Parts group (opgi.com) to get that mean look.
The color is actually more of a copper than red.
Thanks for the kind words!

You know Mike. There's something about the cream color that I just love. Everybody loves the reds and the blacks but I've always liked the Cameo color. My brother and I have tossed around painting the race car that color.
Here's an engine shot of mine. I run the stock snorkel air cleaner at the shows and I put the chrome BUICK cleaner on when I'm cruising.

Still need to get the interior done, but I have two crappy buckets. I still need a rear seat though! Car needs timing adjusted and possibly a carb tweak. Spits out the carb at times. Brakes need to be done (no surprise there after sitting for 18 years. All new brake and fuel lines, welded bucket mounting brackets to floor, welded console mounting brackets to floor and put in non-column shift speedometer (no P R D L2 L1).
4 row radiator, B&M shift kit in the TH400. Sprting an early 70's 455 with Stage 1 heads built by Johnn Chamberlain many moons ago I'm told. I got the engine from Tom Baker from the Carolinas chapter. Has Stage 1 fuel pump too.
72 big throat carb. 3:08 peg leg. Want to put in Posi eventually, but I'm keeping the 3:08's. Still need new tires. Have beautiful grille done over by Dave Tumas. Have rechromed rear bumper from Tri'City and NOS rear tail lights (GS) :Brow:
Still will need some pot metal rechromed. I will be asking a LOT of questions on this when I start driving it in Spring. What I've been through with this car blows my mind. It's a miracle I still have it.

Those MT Super Scavengers sound awesome through the walker dynomax muffs but man those suckers generate some serious egg frying heat. I will be doing some strategic header wrapping in the days ahead.

Also, if anyone has the correct part number for a set of plug wires for this sucker I would appreciate it. The ones I was given I could swear are for a 350. The number 8 wire BARELY reaches. I don't even have them routed right yet. I have that one stretched right accross the top of the engine and it still barely reaches.

Ken,
You should put the '68/69 style valve covers on the motor with the 400-4V decals to give it that stock '69 look :pp
The car looks good...

I definitely plan on it Mike. I have the NOS valve cover decals. :Brow:
I also have the original 400 Valve covers from my 400 that I am going to sandblast and repaint. I forgot to mention I have a set of nicer looking Buick Ralleys and 4 new correct center caps too. There's not much I don't have for this car. I just need a friggin back seat still. Getting a back seat has proven to be as difficult to get as a nice decklid lip molding. Who the hell would have guessed? I thought rear seats were a dime a dozen. :Do No:

Thanks Nick, I've been working hard on this thing for two years now. Right now The car has no wiring, no door panels, radiator, headers, etc. It is still some $$$ from being on the road. She will run (once I finish getting it together) A 494 Stroker, with 9.3:1 Ross slugs, Postons 113 cam, PAE's Block girdle/aluminum pan. On top I am cooking up a Mulit-point Fuel injection setup, and an intercooled Garrett T4-TO4R turbo. Trans is a Raptor 200-R4 w/ 2400 stall. Rear is Just a good old 8.2 BOP, but has Richmond centersection and strange axles. I also intend to pick up one of those "ultimate rear end braces" in the attempt to keep the whole thing from flying apart! Hopefully it will hit the mark at around 725rwhp, If my planning is correct, w 3.90 gears I should be hitting the 18mpg range if I'm nice to it?
Thanks for the compliment.

Sure, Car had a 350 out of a 71 GS w/T350 B&M trans. Normal goodies. I actually cut 1.5 coils out of the front stock springs (which made the ride a little rougher). The rears are two inch drops from OPGI. I had intended to use the 2" drop springs in front, but they just didn't have the "Rake". If you intend to drive your car daily, I wouldn't go quite that low. I had to take speed bumps at a 45deg. angle.

Wheels are 17x8 w/ 4.5" b.s. Tires are Kuhmo XTSA 711's in 245/45R17 front and 255/45R17 rear. I didn't have any issues with tires rubbing at any speeds, or driving conditions (And I owned this car while I was stationed in Germany so it regurlarly saw 120+ mph on the Autobahn). Nothing like the look on a BMW drivers face when you blow by them at 130 or so!

Louie, Dave's car doesn't have a paint code, just two dashes. If it had one, it would have been Q. Here (http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=89920) is a thread on that car.
Isn't paint code B burnished brown or something like that? I think that is what my paint code is on my convertible, but it has been repainted a non-stock color.

This is a numbers correct 69 GS 350, the car was found in Yuma AZ. I bought the car from the 2nd owner who did alot of work to the engine to bring back from it's seized state. Since I have had the car I have replaced all the weather stripping, some faded door panels, redid the upper control arms, shocks, installed Hooker headers and Aero chamber mufflers. 411 Posi with southside lower trailing arms. Now it is time for the car to get some fresh paint, would like to go with a copper or something between the B Code or Q code with some red pearl. I open to suggestions. :Dou:

It is an older version of the sytem so I use A/F gauge with the o2 sensor because it's analog and I tune it from inside the car. I bought this car in Flint in 1982, blew it up in 83.
It sat ever since, until I saw a raccoon crawling out of the conv top about 5 years ago.
It has been a slow ,little at a time job, but it is getting there.
I took it out on the road last month and knocked off a cam lobe, :Dou: but the new one is going back in. :TU:
Still have a ways to go, but getting there....

I was in the Buick GS club of Ontario in the mid 80's but at the time I was into Corvairs as well. I wanted to get a GS but that idea fell by the way side. I am still have the Corvairs :Dou:
I have run into Chris and Sam at a couple of car shows in the past and stopped to say high. Great people they are.
I still have my photo album of past club events , show and track days. also all my club newsslatters.

This is the same photo as one for sale by a Holden dealer in Adelaide earlier this year, Ive also got a 68 and their description sounded good so I had to have a look at it. I dont know if you have checked it out yourself but it had a lot of rust, engine sounded OK, chrome OK, glass OK, had expired Vic rego. Let me know if it is the same one... If you are in Adelaide well hook up and go for a cruise, turn some heads.

The convertibles from the '68 and '69 are really looking good, with those lines.
Are the headlights of a '68/'69 skylark/GS, the same as the ones from a '70/'72 skylark/ GS?

Hi Bart,
Actually, thye headlight bezels from 68-69 are different than 70. In fact, 68 is even different than 69. Someone I'm sure has some closeup pics they can post.
The lamps themselves are of course all the same. (I think??)

Rich,
If you look closely the '68 casting has a straight line dividing bezel into two distinct sections, whereas the '69 is more rounded and there is a gap between the top and bottoms of the two rounded sections around the lights. Probably not a good description, but if you have the two next to each other they are quite different in appearance.
Has Chris been talking to you about the '69 shell? :Brow:

Yea, had a talk with Chris yesterday. What better, he wants it and I want it gone :TU: Looks like we will also be able to help George out with some sheet metal. We just need to figure out the logistics. I no longer have anything to tow with. Add that to the fact that the Cal body is on the frame I need. I do have an extra frame but it's attached to the body that I'm using. I need to get them apart, swap body's then Chris can have something that at least rolls. Oh the tangled web we weave  Soon, I will have one drive train, one frame, and one body.

Sorry , I don't want to create a mistake :o
The casting are different mostly notable in the middle , for the finish the 68 picture is not "correct" (the finish) 68 and 69 only have the outside edge chrome the rest is paint . It's suppose to look like this ....

Yes I bought it in Texas, but no it doesn't have a 4 speed. I bought it in the Austin area, so I'm sure you've seen it around.
After I bought it in Austin I had DAS come and pick it up to have it shipped out here, well as they were loading it on the car hauler they hooked it up to the lower A-arm and SNAP. I guess you can't pull a 4000-5000 pound car by its suspension parts.

Here's a few pics of my clunker...
Not to be compared to 99.9% of the others on here ....
Hopefully my impression will be noticed with the after pics.....soon to come..:beer
1st pic is when I first purchased it... Since i've half-@$$ed primed it.. gave most of my attention to the fenders and hood ,trunk , etc. i'll let the body shop handle the fillins I can't find the pics of the rust damage i repaired around the back window. Even the body shop guy told me he was impressed with the pinch weld repair i had made and the rust hole fill-ins around the bottoms corners..
So far all my $$ went into exhaust, transmission , rearmain seal , suspension, electrical system, tires , and GAs... lots and lots of gas.(replaced the original aircleaner assembly w/ decals)...I've had cars way more advanced and expensive than this 69 lark ..( bought for $800)
Nothing has given me more joy than to slowly ressurect this old beast..
So many people are curious about this car's mystique its just silly..
I love it.. If its ever to be parted with ... it's only to be replaced..w/ another. It has a 1970 , 350-2 its crazy torquey.!!.
dunno why:Do No: I'm startin to think this car was rebuilt about 15 years ago with modified parts and cam possibly(eng was painted blue with original red paint exposed underneath).. Even the transmission guy (who builds racing transmissions) was impressed with the torque this car has.. and the miles. (guestimating over 250k miles.) Timing chain is next on the agenda for teh spring then the paint in the month of june..
