View Full Version : The wagon's rear is missing some pieces...

I decided to drop the rear out of the wagon to upgrade to a spool and different gears and to detail the back half of the car since the new paint went on last winter. After pulling the cover off, I find 2 teeth missing from the ring gear. Further inspection revealed they were sitting in the bottom of the pumpkin. I matched them up and figure with a little crazy glue, I'd be back in business. Apparently there's still some tooth contact as there was no indication of any problems - no noise, no clunking, no nothing.

Guess this means I definitely need new gears this year...

Looks like a 12 bolt to me.

Hey Paul I bet that dyno did ya in. LOL!!!

It's a good thing you decided to take it apart. That would have made a mess on the track. :jd:

Yeah Dom, I remember you having rearend trouble in Englishtown. Who knows how long mine has been like that - I haven't had the cover off the rear in over 4 years and that's probably over 400 passes.

Hey Beth, you think Alan could really use these teeth?
I don't know, they may be a little small for his mouth!

C'mon Alan, you know I'm only joking. I'm just jealous that Big Red is getting a fresh motor. I don't know though, I've still got my money on Da Wagon but then I'm partial to wagons...

BigRed may be getting a new motor, but you're getting your Rear Fixed   :eek2:

Believe me....I'd much rather have had that motor stay together a few more years and dump the $$$ into my Sporty :ball:

Fix it??? Already??

I figure I have at least until March or so to fix it. Everything I need is on the way - of course I'm using this as an opportunity to upgrade! Finally going to put in the spool I bought at Summit while visiting during the BPG event and upgrading the pinion yoke and swapping to 4.10 gears. I've spent the last 3 days under the car on my back scraping undercoating - you know I have to have the underside as clean as the topside. :Brow: :Brow: :Brow:

Alan, I think you're on to something with WagonRacing 2005. I'll get the word out. We could make shirts, sell bumper stickers and those cool, glow in the dark necklaces!

We hadn't seriously talked about working on Sporty so I figured something else was in the works. That's alright, BigRed deserves some pampering every now and then too. :3gears:

Beth, any plans for Da Wagon this winter or are you focusing on finding Dana a new ride? That way he'll leave your car alone.

My winter project is already done :pp :moonu:, had the tranny rebuilt. Had a crack in the valve body, converted from roller clutches, to sprag clutches.
I still have not put her "away" for winter yet, since there is not salt on the streets yet. Will more then likely do that this weekend.

I like Alan's idea of WagonRacing 2005, now who's wagon are we going to use for the shirts :Do No:

you two need to name your Wagons....and I know where good pictures are of both :Brow:

Paul - I kinda knew going out to Salem I was on borrowed time with the BigRed's motor.....I Mean ....some adj. rockers just shouldn't be 2+ turns in more than others !! Even "I" know that much, but it still didn't stop me from driving it 1,000+ miles out and back plus putting a few runs in and hitting the 12's.

If this wouldn't have happened, we would have pow-wowwwed alot more seriously on Sporty's rebirth.

WagonRacing 2005 by Sega

Lets see....besides you two there's

Bill Lagna - SportWagon from Hell.....maybe out next year again ??
Mike T. - TA Wagon

then there's Dinosour Alan - he's got one torn apart and planning something wicked Im sure

There's that black-ish Century Turbo Wagon....and also a Roadmonster turbo wagon (Both at E-town 2 years ago from maryland ??)

There ARE quite a few other Wagons out there......anyone else plan on a Wagon Train out to Salem next year ???

Its almost where we could have our own Wagon Class !!

Maybe we can get Tony (AVC1966) to come out & play too.

Then there is a certain surly somebody in SE. WI. with a Sporty recently seen doing a wicked pegleg burnout here on the board.

There is Chris Paape (70SportWagon I think), don't know if he wants to race, although he has Dana's old GS hood for it.

NotAvg1 I think has 4 for sale right now, if I read correctly :eek2:

That sounds like we have quite the field for next year - hopefully we can get most of them out there. It would be fun seeing more than just one or two wagons out there.

Jeff, I ran the 11.49 this year down in Cecil County. That was as it sits for the regular Wednesday night street program, drag radials and all. I thought it was a fluke but I backed it up with a string of 11.51-53's. The car was hooking down there, narrowly missing a 1.59 60ft. You better step it up - Greg is almost done with my heads! Did you check out the thread from the chassis dyno? We definitely need to get your Skylark there next year - I learned more that day than spending months at the track.

Beth, I'm only trying to go faster because you are!
You think I want to feel as bad as Alan will next year when he gets beat by a girl??? :spank:

Ohhh....and Beth ?? While I Totally Dig Wagons (Duhh ?? I own 4)....and think YOU are Da Bomb being a Gurlie who not only Loves an old Wagon, but Races it too......I'll have plenty of Fun in '05, TankEwe. Not much beats making a 12 second pass....then putting your top and all 4 windows down on the return road with the flip of a few switches :pp :pp :TU:

...not Much. An 11 Sec. Pass in a Sporty would be one of them though :TU: :beer :TU:

Paul,

Cool wagon, hope it is back together soon.

Looking at your 1st attached pic, unless the pic is of a reflection, one can spot how the 12 bolt posi case is slightly tracked from a loose pinion. Have run across more instances of teeth get chipped off pinions from head of pinion being loose & "riding back in forth" than from catastrophic failure at the track. Just one reason, personally like to a pull the axles, carrier, & pinion & reestablish correct pinion depth, along with installing a new crushsleeve, whenever a pinion is "loose" or when a pinion seal is leaking.

Also in viewing the pics, noticed that there was not a date code in the lower rh rear webbing of the hsg. Would bet that 12 bolt was original to something other than a Chevrolet product. Canadian Buick perhaps :pp

Roger, can you explain a little more? I don't understand what you mean when you say the posi case is tracked. I assume you mean the pinion gear is riding back and forth along the main axis of the car. I'm guessing this would cause an elongated contact pattern on the teeth along with increased wear and possible interference of the teeth, causing the break. Is that what you mean by "tracked". I had heard that the crush sleeve should be replaced every couple of years depending on how much track time the car sees. Now I will be performing preventative maintenance more regularly! I'd certainly like to know how this can be prevented. Thanks.

Good catch on the date codes. When I bought the rear, I was told it came out of an Oldsmobile but I couldn't tell you which year or model.

Thanks for the information.

Paul

I'd use JB Weld rather than Crazy glue.......

I might replace the whole gear
would be safer incase the glue job doesnt hold and they break off and this time jam up
